DisNES II "A Twist of Fate"

“Une urgence nationale!” the cry broke through the brooding silence of Paris. Dark forboding clouds hung over the city ominously.

Citizens scrambled out of their homes and gathered at the walls along the streets where massive papers had been posted.

“Grande Guerre Patriotique!” proclaimed the headline. “Les hommes entre les âges de 16-40 s'engagent et combattent pour votre pays ! Les chiens impériaux ont envahi la Mère patrie et ont rencontré leurs décès ! Nos ennemis sont impitoyablement abattus. Soyez un homme et faites votre devoir saint pour protéger votre pays, vos peuples et votre famille ! C'est l'année décisive ; il est temps pour un effort suprême de prendre le combat à nos ennemis ! Engagez maintenant !

The crowd murmured quietly at first, and then gradually louder and louder as men steeled their resolve and women begged them against rash action.

The scene was repeated in cities and towns throughout France. The recruitment offices were flooded with volunteers, as hundreds of thousands of men signed up to defend the Motherland from invaders.

OOC: Heres a piece of drivel. Expect more of it. Damn you Panda for forcing me to write this nonsense rather than quality stories. May you burn for this.

So who exactly are you talking to Kalthzar? :p

Not to needlessly complicate things, but the Savoyards aren't really going to promise that much in the way of me doing things and I have enough vassal state NESes going now (a disturbing number to Panda, to be honest... okay, like, two... but still :p).

So, seeing as A) Savoy is not really much of a nation, B) I'm probably just getting in the way of military planning, C) Dis does a better bumbling Duke, and D) Tommy just dropped out, I'll go ahead and switch to Ayutthaya now that they're free.

Next time I'll do a better job of choosing my country, sorry about that. The orders I sent for the Savoyards aren't bad and they contain the military wishes of the Aragonese/HRE alliance, so they should be fine, but since its not my duchy anymore, do with it what you will.

Orders for Ayutthaya will be in shortly. As in, like, maybe tomorrow. ;)

Nation Background: King Ramathibodi I (Uthong) founded Ayutthaya as the capital of his kingdom in 1350. Since then the kingdom has seen some ups and downs, even being annexed to the Ava Kingdom of Burma. However strong links with the Iberians and use of Japanese mercenaries allowed the kingdom to modernize (some even compared Ayutthaya to Lisbon in beauty and size) and break away from the Avans and even taking some of their vassal states for its own. Ayutthaya’s power would grow and grow throughout the 17th century as it would conquer Lan Na, Laos and Khmeria to become Indochina’s hegemon power.

The Holy Roman Empire is a insatiable monster who will devour the world! Fight the enemy! Make them pay, make them pay for every inch of land they have occupied! Make them pay for every soldier and civllian they have killed! Make them pay for every home that has been detroyed, every farm burnt, and every family torn apart! Make them pay dearly in blood, sweat and tears oh glourious and noble French people! The enemy shall pay!

“Death, yes that’s it…the stench of death hangs over the land. I love that smell.” Said Alexius looking over the darkened sky from the balcony of the palace.

“My lord, our enemies have amassed and attacked. We are in a dire situation. We are outnumbered, and we are fighting on many fronts. The south has been overrun.” Said General Étienne urgently

“Fear not I have been waiting for this moment.” He stepped forward and handed Étienne a packet. “Here are your orders. It is time for the final reckoning with the Imperials. Do your duty well and our victory is assured.”

Étienne saluted “Yes my lord”

He strode away. “What do you think?” Alexius asked seemingly to no one. Behind him a wall opened and Adrien stepped out.

“If you are questioning me about his character then I can tell you he is a loyal, capable, man who will carry out his duty to the fullest. If you are questioning me about our situation, then I can only hope that you have something planned that will save us because I sure as hell don’t” Adrien replied

Alexius smirked “You think our situation is that bad?”

“The worse we have ever been in”

“Not the worse actually” said Alexius quietly

Adrien raised his eyebrow “Do elucidate”

“Er…its difficult to explain but I have been in far more difficult situations than this. The last time this happened I made sure the enemy paid. And they will pay once again. Their homeland will burn. Their people will suffer. They will pay dearly in blood, sweat and tears. For every French soldier they kill I will slaughter ten thousand of them.”

“A difficult proposition”

“But not an impossible one”

**********************************************************

General Étienne tore open the packet hastily and spread the contents out on the desk. It took him several moments before he realized the true scale of it. “Good god!” he exclaimed

This was mad. This was insane. This was brilliant.

“Good god!”

***********************************************************

The horse thundered down the deserted road toward the city. The storm had finally broken, and lightening cracked through the sky and rain poured down. The horse pressed on splashing water as its mighty hooves hit the ground.

The rider’s black cloak billowed back as he turned left and came upon a villa. He dismounted and made his way toward the gate where a guard was standing. He leveled his rifle at the clocked stranger. “Halt! State your business here!”

Adrien drew back his hood and removed a document from his pocket. “I am here as a representative of the King.”

The guard studied the paper, handed it back and motioned for him to proceed. He walked thought the large wrought iron gate into a massive courtyard where painted targets were set up. Opposite them was a strange device one he had never seen before. He moved forward and inspected the contraption.

”I see you have found my automaton,” said a voice behind him

He turned around to find a bespectacled man peering at him. “I am Jacques de Vaucanson lead engineer in this project.”

“And what is this project? These automatons?” asked Adrien

“No, no those are a personal project of mine. It is my dream to one day create an automaton that looks and acts exactly like a human so that one could mistake it for human” he said dreamily "It is somewhat related to the project though I suppose"

“Um right….” Said Adrien “The King inquires into the progress of the project. Our time is running short”

“I will have it ready within the year as soon as my last shipment of supplies arrive. You may inform his majesty that I have perfected the mechanism and it will be ready for mass production soon. Now if you will follow me I will give you a demonstration.”

“You really think what your are working on will win the war?” asked Adrien

“Yes I do.”

@Dis: Yeah, I know ;) Savoy is a puppet state with many allies and one enemy. Ayutthaya is pretty much the exact opposite.

Speaking of...

Ayutthaya respectfully requests a five year Non-Agression Pact from the Dai Vet people as a show of good faith.

Not really - Ayutthaya doesn't have any allies ;).

Good faith? you speak of good faith; you who have invaded our lands countless times, enslaved our allies and attacked kingdoms without warning or provocation?

Believe me it is only our peacefulness and good nature that is causing me to issue this warning - withdraw from the lands you have annexed from us, release your malay vassals, and strive for peace in Ava. Do not do so, and the consequences will be dire. Do so, and we will begin to believe in your "good faith".

@Cuiv: Sunday night GMT but earlier =faster update.

That was kinda my point. Ayutthaya has only one ally and many enemies. ;)

Very well. We politely remind Dai Viet, however, that Ayutthaya has signed a defensive alliance with the mighty Nan Ming. Any intrusion into Ayutthayan territoy would be foolish at best. Ayutthaya also notes that they sued for peace with the Arakan rebels and the White Malayans last year - a peace both accepted. After signing said peace treaty, however, both parties reneged on their promises, broke the treaty, and attacked Ayutthaya. We sought peace, but we will not be humiliated.

To Arakan Bandits

For breaking the peace treaty, you have lost all honour. As our King is feeling gracious, he offers you this one-time gift.

To the leaders of the Arakan Bandits: Surrender and you will be given a quick and honourable death.

To the soldiers of the Arakan Bandits: Lay down your arms and deliver your leaders to Ayutthaya and you will be given amnesty, as well as lands and status. Your leaders have lost divine favour, ruined their people, and sold your honour to betrayal. In serving Ayutthaya you will find rewards, a restoration of honour, and peace. In serving these bandits, you will find only one reward - death. Choose wisely and choose quickly. We will not be so kind in the future.

To the Kingdom of Bengal

This fighting is senseless. We have no great hatred for the other, no deep seeded quarrels. Let us meet and discuss possibilities for the peaceful partition of the lands we have conquered.

Do not worry, we are sure running to the Na Ming for aid when you feel weak will certainly restore that respect you feel you have lost. Sued for peace perhaps, but Prince Singu tells us that you sent armies into territories that were apportioned to him after the compact was singed, thus violating it. It is very much a case of his word against yours...

Indeed my most noble and gracious fellow monarch, you are most wise to propose such - we believe, and our obedient vassal King Bayinnaung agrees, that the most proper apportionment of the lands would see Mandalay province and all lands west of the Salween should go to the Kingdom of Upper Ava under King Bayinnaung's stewardship. This kingdoms security would be provided by Bengal in exchange for tribute.

We are very sorry to say this is quite unacceptable, given the current positions of our armies and the extent of our conquest. Gracious sovereign, we believe the Irrawaddy would be a much more appropriate border. We also see little reason to support Bayinnaung, as he no longer has divine favour. We would be willing to surrender all claims to the portion reserved to Bayinnaung to direct Bengali control in return for present borders. In the interests of peace, however, we are willing to hear a counter proposal. We eagerly await your reply, most noble King.

Division by the slow and easily crossible Irrawaddy would not be appropriate, dividing as it would the heartlands of the Burmese people and only provide breeding grounds for further conflict, not to mention the questions of controlling river trade. As for "Divine favor"? By Allah; your complaints are without base to us, and your...understanding of our relationship with Bayinnaung seems flawed I am sorry to say. Do not deceive yourself overmuch as to your own strength, my most gracious fellow monarch, and our offer stands unchanged.

OOC: lets seem some orders people!
