DMI X - A noble way to Deity

The reason I suggested worker first was not for improvements (at least not primarily) but to speed up production through chops. If we do want to go wonder crazy, we'll need chops. Chopping out the settler will also speed up the process, which is essential when we're dealing with a limited time frame before the big step to deity.

Perhaps a revised strategy of one religion and picking what wonders we have a realistic shot at.

I've moved the Warrior onto the hill. It did reveal nothing to us as we saw the tiles anyway because they were in the soon-to-be BFC anyway and thus could be seen by the Settler already. I'll settle on the spot. Chopping sure is important with this start. I guess GreyFox is right here - going Polytheism > Mining > BW seems the right move here. I'll play the first 20 tonight.

Yeah, just hit me :D . And you're right to do so. I wasn't at home unexpectedly, so I couldn't get to it. But I'll post tonight, promised :) .

Again I apologize for reporting so late. But i was at my parent's house this weekend quite unexpectedly and couldn't play there as the PC handles BtS only barely. Anyway, on with the game...

As agreed I settle in place. It showes we have a food resource in the BFC - Cows.

As our Worker would have nothing to do I start out with a Warrior. This will come in handy if we settle our second city - no need to produce garrison then. I pick Polytheism in an attempt to snag Hinduism, the GreyFox is right - we shouldn't delay worker techs for too many religions.

The exploring warrior gets the two huts and nets some gold, nothing to be excited. The RNGod doesn't like us, anyway. Buddhism fell early, but I didn't expect this:

And I thought this was noble. There goes our beautiful plan of grabbing a religion. Well, we'll do without. I put some turns into a barracks to time the Worker with the upcoming BW. Here is an overview shot of the lands:

Note that we have Stone nearby - we could settle a junk city down there as it has crabs too. Pyramids would be nice. Seems there is some prime real estate up north - those grasslands yearn for cottages.

Ergh! I hate it when a religion/wonder falls one turn before I get them. Oh well! We didn't exactly start with an optimal start for early commerce.

I got it. And will play tonight. Any thoughts before then?

The report:

(2) We meet our friend Asoka as his warrior comes up from the South. It turns out that it was this dear friend who founded Hinduism just one turn before we did. But that's okay, cuz we're friends. Wait, no, it's not. He'll pay for it later.

1meetasokaMedium.jpg

(IT) Our warrior kills two lions without losing any health. this is foreshadowing his skills to come.

(4) Hut gives our warrior experience. We can see Asoka's borders. They are to the west and slightly north or us.

(8) Worker is built and starts a forest chop to speed settler production. Hut gives 82 gold

2bronzeworkingMedium.jpg

(9) Bronze working in. I decide not to revolt to slavery yet as are growth rate it still too slow to really take advantage of whipping. Later we will want to switch though. Select Hunting as next research for camps and on the way to AH.

(10) Promote warrior to Woodsman II for faster exploration

(13) I meant to put one chop into the forest directly east and then move to build a camp when Hunting came in. But I forgot to change settler commands and he will end up completing the chop. Not a big deal as it will help speed our expansion

(IT) Warrior kills a bear and two wolves! I official rename him "Beast Slayer" in honor of his proud history of animal destruction.

3HuntingMedium.jpg

(14) Hunting is in. I select AH next. Beast Slayer moves onto forested hill to heal.

(15) Forest chop completes and we are six turns to a settler. Here's an overview of the world as we now know it:

4worldasweknowitMedium.jpg

We should keep the expansion efforts going while trying to see what wonders we can land before the switch to Deity. Asoka is going to have to get it later because he stole our religion. We couldn't found it ourself, but one day I think we need to make the holy city ours anyways. But that will have to wait until later. For now Asoka, you can be our buddy.

Here's the save:

Got it.

Hmm ... I had a bad feeling abt this. Our land is medicore, the only site I see of interest is the rice and copper further up north.

Our best bet seems to be settling a city on the coast for stony crabs and going for the stone wonders. I would direct our reseearch towards that goal.

Hmmm ... building a settler before we have escorts???

--

Sorry about the build. On noble when heading to a site as close as the Stone, I usually feel pretty confident about going with just teh settler. You can use the warrior that is garrisoned to quickly make sure there is no barbs, if need be. We can pause and put a warrior in first if you decide it safer.

No problem, dazed, it is just that if you have chosen to go escort first, there is no hurry in chopping, then the worker can build some camps to give us better tile yields.

No big issue, I did exactly just that, switching to warrior while building camp and let city grow, then switch back to settler at size 3 (warrior is also out).

We got a random event ... forest fire. Are we in california or what?

DMIX-BC2320-event.jpg

Since we have no happiness issue, I would normally save the 10g. But as we have lots of money, and a forest does worth 30 hammers, I chose the first option.

The Slayer slays.

DMIX-BCxxxx-animals.jpg

And the settler should settle.

DMIX-BC2080-settler.jpg

I would have settled him on the stone, but like to give the team a chance to veto it in case people may object to settling on resources.

The map revealed ... please cock your head sideways if you cannot imagine how this looks like the game we are playing. Rotating your monitor 90% would do the trick as well ;)

DMIX-BC2200-map.jpg

I have gotten animal husbandry and almost completed the wheel. Suggest going masonry next and start the mids. The worker should obviously road the the two cities together to get stones online. Thereafter agriculture is sorely needed as we need the food. Suggest clearing some grassland forest for farming (chops should go to the mids or settlers)

Very well. We have some room to expand - but we should keep in mind not to go crazy. I think 6 cities at the 1AD mark should be the uppermost threshold.

P.S.: @Fox: are you ill or what is wrong ? A report from you without a major rant  ;) ?

Hmm, that's some crappy land around us, except for maybe rice-copper site

I think we should make sure to settle towards the north and look what's beneath the fog near the horsies.
Asoka is up north right? Maybe then rice-copper and horse-gems site settled first (after stoned city) to block his expansion.

@Immy: I don't rant on a new player on his very first set ... ;)

Thank god. I was dreading to play.

@MyOtherCar: Nope, Asoka is to the west. You can see his border in my last screenshot (North is to left for that one).
That's good news, at least as long noone else shows up to the north. I believe that's where we have the best expansion potential.

Rotating your monitor 90% would do the trick as well

Maybe 90º ? ;)

Settling on stone looks good.... not that we have many options. BTW how about making 3rd city right next to Asoka to force the deity AI to expand towards jungle or ice? ;)

On settling stone: I think it will be a decent city long run and if we're going to make use of the stone, it needs to be now. I'd say, let's go for it.

I'm very sorry to have to take a skip on the first round. I have to go to the hospital in a few minutes for a hernia operation, which will keep me in the hospital for four days to recover. I had expected to be able to get my turns in before I left, but it didn't work. Good luck, I'll report in when I'm back.
