DMI XIII - The CTON

Athens? Hmmm .... but first, I was wondering why we choose combustion. Industrialism does not need combustion, and we ado not need a navy. Yes, tank needs combustion but if we research electricity first, we can at least build factories while researching combustion/industrialism.

CTON-AD1938-Tech-Tree.jpg

Anyway, no big deal. I change to electricity and revolted to UniSuff, Emanc, and State Property.

CTON-AD1938-Civics.jpg

UniSuff is to get more hammer, and with Emancipation, we do not need HR to keep city happy.

Turn out my choice of switching away from combustion is correct ... because some turns later, our Mata Hari met Charles Dickens and reports back with the secrets of selling matchsticks:

:woohoo:

Now, Athens .... this is what I inherits:

CTON-AD1942-Athens.jpg

Impressive stack on both sides. I decided to wait one more turn to have full arty power before attacking .... it pays off

CTON-AD1942-Captured.jpg

That city is absolutely crazy. No only is it stuffed with wonders, it is full of instructors as well.

More cities capture:

And RNGod is smiling at us:

Gems pop ... yeah!

But it is not all smile, say hello to the new iron beast of Greeks:

Nonetheless, we pushed on, and reaches the gates of Sparta.

CTON-AD1958-Sparta.jpg

Here is the war plan I have in mind:

CTON-AD1958-Warplan.jpg

I have already tore down the defense of Sparta, so next turn, we should cross the river and take out that tank, and then take Sparta. It is gonna to be brutal, but we have lots of troops to burn,

In the north, the two stacks should rendezvous and try to take the indicated city. Should be easy, with majority of Cyrus' forces in the south.

The celtic war is relatively easier, so no need any actual planning. Just remember to draft our Globe city every 2-3 turns.

The workers are busy building rails, and I have been building missionaries. Do keep building them, especially now that I have erected Wall Street in the Hindu Shrine city.

I tentatively chose Flights. Feel free to change, but I suggest we reserach it next to enable SAMs.

Good luck.

Wow, Athens

Nice set, Fox :goodjob: How close are we to dom? I doubt I'll see another set of this game though ;)

Except that there is no Domination Victory available in that game, only Time and Conquest. :D Well played GF, Athens was worth the efforts I'd say.

  • Imhotep >> ON DECK
  • Atlas >> Military Advisor (just hit F5 if you need him ;) )
  • pigswill
  • Ozbenno
  • berserks01
  • GreyFox >> JUST PLAYED
  • sunrise089 >> UP NOW

I don't think we can possibly die, at least not within your turnset even if you set it as a goal to die  bv I think it is more of not losing too much score since clearly we are vying for time victory.

Hmm...so as I play my turns today, perhaps I should accept Fox's challenge. Let's see - auto-build wealth, disband all units, railroad in front of the enemy stacks...can you gift your own stack to the enemy? :)

Turn 0 - Fox left me with a great setup. The only thing I'm a bit confused about is whether the huge garrison stacks in our recently-captured cities are there for a reason, or just waiting to be moved forward. For example, in Fox's map above he doesn't show any arrows for the stack in Argos.

Turn 1 - Units move forward. It's all I can do not to automate all of the workers who ask for order this turn, but I resist the urge.

Turn 2 - Sparta falls.
civ4screenshot0040im2.jpg

Isca falls.

Turn 3 - Corinth falls.
civ4screenshot0041jc0.jpg

Turn 4 - Flight comes in.
civ4screenshot0042hj6.jpg

I choose radio next - it's on the way to gunships and modern armor. Global warming occurs near one of our cities, which is silly since we have no nuke plants, no ICBMs, and have kept a lot of forests within our BFCs.

Turn 5 - Frederick has a pair of tanks running around in Willem's land. Tolosa falls. This turn I begin sending most of the units produced each turn to the south. Both Cyrus and Willem are down to a handful of cities, but Frederick has a lot more power than Churchill.

Turn 6 - We pop another aluminum, but not within the BFC of any city. Our one tank in the south defeats both of Frederick's tanks we can see.

Turn 7 - We capture Eretria.
civ4screenshot0043ac9.jpg

Turn 8 - Radio comes in. I select Rocketry next - it's still on the way to Advanced Flight and Composites. We capture Durnovaria. We capture Rhodes, and sink most of Cyrus's navy inside the city. We capture Thebes and leave Cyrus with just a single city.

Turn 9 - We capture Camulodunum and knock Willem out of the game.

turn 10 - Rocketry comes in, Salellites selected next.

Eiffel tower will complete next turn. Overall I've been mainly building Tanks this turns, and the wars against Churchill and Frederick should feature a lot of tank action. I've built at least as many artillary as I've lost, and we should have enough in both theaters, especially if we use Tanks for collateral as well. I also started building bombers, and the next player may want to build more - I confess I don't know much about late-game warring, so I don't know the bomber/tank ideal mix. We may also want to build Maoi statues in a coastal city. Finally, I've grouped our Scientist and Spy on the same tile. We'll get another GP in 2-3 turnsets, so I'd hope for a different kind and trigger another golden age. Please also note Thebes has 4 bombers and Tolosa has one.

No workers are automated, but there are tons of go-to orders. Mainly sending tanks, anti-tanks, and artillary to Tolosa in the south, and sending workers to unimproved tiles.

Imhotep inspired me to keep tabs on the numbers of units killed and lost this turnset. Here are my numbers:

Lost while defending - 9

killed while defending - 8

lost while attacking - 23

killed while attacking - 52

Situation:

Got it. We have 71 turns left. Let's try to get a Conquest Victory :yup: :D .

We could probably disband our entire military and put every city on building culture and still win this game.
And still not die is probable, but I doubt we will still win ... ;)

Now that Cyrus and Williem are history, the focus of the war suddenly shifted from the northern to the southern theatre. I think it is okay to put some workers on auto networking at this stage (i.e. building railroads only).

I think conquest is indeed possible if we are a bit bolder: eg. split our forces more (like breaking the stack of 50+ and 40+ units into 2 stacks each) to go for simultaneous capture, or even a purely bomber+tanks strike force (forgoing the slow arties) for more speed.

:bump: ing this sucker

Yes, yes. I'll play and report tomorrow, I have a buttload of work these days. I even can't play MP  !

Okay, sorry for the delay - but this set did sport a lot of action, and it took me more than 1 hour to play may 10 turns. By the way, Athens is just sick - 29 XP units out of the gate  !

Battle Stats:
Units victorious while attacking: 187
Units victorious while defending: 31
Units withdrawing while attacking: 7
Units defeated while attacking: 45
Units defeated while defending: 12
Units escaping while attacking: 6

That's right, I killed 218 units while losing 67. Not bad :D .

My set started with this though:

51424145rw4.jpg

The South had some cities with pretty strong garrisons, but our stacks were simply bigger :D .

And so we killed and left a trail of city ruins along our path...

As in a song from Schubert: "No place that can give protection when my rifle aims..."

Some nuts however were too tough to crack, at least for our smaller stacks...

Some weren't...

51784116pd9.jpg

Conclusion: We will win a conquest victory easily with 61 turns left. Churchill will be dead next set, and though Fred now has MechInf, we will overcome them with sheer force. I have built Airports in most cities, that should speed things up. Have fun!

Imhotep

The great thing is we will chew into Fred from both directions once Churchill is gone. He can't stand at both fronts, his back cities are only lightly protected.
