Am I in the clique?? I've never been in a clique before :(

Watch out Borachio. This could be a beginning of major infiltration....

Nah. I'm supremely not worried.

There's the Ruling Clique, which I'm plainly not in, and the other clique (membership one).

Me too. You know, I was inspired by Mr Phrossack's signature for that.

I'm going to have to delete it now.

Good grief, if there's one thing that gets my goat more than grammar nazis, it's people making the same trivial grammatical errors over and over and over again.

Why can't they vary it a bit, and make different ones now and again?

Spoiler :
Like me. :smug:

The Clique seems to be like the archetype of the hipster: everyone claims to be familiar with it, but if pushed will struggle to define it, except to insist that it has nothing to do with them personally.

I'd rather define it via PM than publicly, but you'd just ignore it like you always do.

I don't think it would clarify matters any; we discussed "The Clique" a little while ago, and a lot of people were claiming that it was in some way related to some chat-room or other, apparently something which span off from fiftychat, and as the plain ignorance with which I stumbled through that sentences suggests, I only have a very vague idea what any of that is.

My honest opinion? There's a certain selection of posters who are broadly leftish, who are students or otherwise academic, who frequent WH, and who are given to snark. These posters tend to back each other up in discussions, while rarely clashing. To those not fitting the criteria, this might give the appearance of a conspiracy against the public. But, really, it's just a bunch of posters of similar dispositions inhabiting the same space.

I never knew what that chat room stuff was about, either.

Conspiracy? No. Cliques don't really work that way. More like an informal group of very like-minded people who use peer pressure, sarcasm, snark, and irritability to pester others into either accepting their ideas, being pissed at them, or leaving. All the while they provide one another with back slaps, high fives, and a united front against those who disagree with them, posters whom they tar rather indiscriminately as racist sexist reactionary homophobic "embittered retrograde" MRA bigots, whether or not the label fits. And they always get away with it.

So yes, I think the clique can be pretty well defined. All I'm not mentioning are names.

Anecdotes/individual examples are meaningless...

For every professional soccer star, how many never dream for that and never make it?

What's their problem? Their adversity should make their playing better. Then they'll be great soccer players. Problem solved.

Ah well, those who indulge in such behaviour (and I have seen some; I hope I haven't done so myself, but who knows?) are just betraying the weakness of their own arguments, mebbe? Or maybe their arguments are strong, but they're too lazy to properly express them?

I wouldn't have thought Mr Fish was guilty of either laziness or the inability to express a position, though.

I find he makes a good duo with Gory the Grey. Not to say that there are no meaningful differences. But there is also something distinctly similar about them.

Wait, I’m thought to be part of a clique? And with my dear Mr. B?

The very thought of it makes my day.

Aw. That's so flattering. Thanks.

But really, Mr Grey is smart, and knows stuff. I'm just a... just me, I guess.

Wait. I’m thought to know stuff? I, who got my wit out of A Hundred Merry Tales?

Well, if as Phrossack says, backslapping is a sign of clique membership, then I suppose the mutually-admiring Borachio and I may well be a clique.

But, with Master Moth's permission assumed, I'm throwing open membership in our clique to everyone on CFC:OT. Everyone who isn't already in a clique, that is. How shall we manage dogpiling once everyone is in the same clique, you ask? That will be determined at a later meeting.

As a password, you simply have to be able to say how much the gross sum of deuce-ace amounts to.

Who's in?

You're not mentioning names, apart from Traitorfish, who you are happy to mention.

I'm pretty tired of this clique stuff you keep vaguely asserting in conspiratorial whispers. It just sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too: you want to accuse people of labelling other posters as "embittered retrograde MRA bigots" whether or not the label fits, whilst simultaneously labelling other posters as members of some ill-defined clique, whenever you want, for whatever reason you want, without ever being specific about those reasons, or about the posters in the clique, whether or not the label fits. Put up or shut up I say.

Moderator Action: Please take the discussion of supposed cliques to PMs, or off-site. It's certainly off-topic for this thread.
