Do you have a gun?

Many weapons are not really useful for sports (hunting, shooting range etc.), for example, shotguns, are you shooting pigeons?

I'm not sure what you're saying here. That shotguns do not make good sporting guns? News to me. People generally use shotguns to hunt waterfowl birds and clay pigeons more so than combat or self-defense. Any gun can be used for "sport." The only limit is the human imagination.

When my stepfather died we found an old Walther P38 from wwii.

After a few days I handed it over to the police. It was the first time i had a close look (and feel) on a real gun. It was surprisingley heavy. (except for airguns)

When my grandpa moved into his house in Alberta (in the 40s), he found an American civil war era gun. Go figure.

If I moved to the states, how long until I could get a gun? Do you have to be a citizen?

With a green card you can buy a gun after 90 days residency in your state. Citizenship is not required.

However one state (Washington) does require US citizenship and you just touching a gun even as a lawful resident is a serious crime.

When my grandfather was put in a nursing home (about a month ago), my family took the opportunity to remove the various guns from inside his house, and give them to the police. Luckily, there's an amnesty at the moment, so it was no questions asked. He had never liked the idea of disarming the population.

Pfft! Hippies.

I am not actually mocking Americans. I think guns should be heavily controlled in countries where guns and gun crime are not already ubiquitous. But if you live in a place where everyone else already seems to have one and there is really high crime, I can understand the desire.

In Canada, it is mostly unnecessary, but if I lived in Detroit, it is best to be all Gran Turino style.

I'm a little confused because hossam never stated that killing people was cool to begin with so why are you putting words in his mouth? I think guns are cool and interesting. People think other weapons such as swords, bombers and tanks are cool too...And? Doesn't mean that me or anyone else thinks that killing and death is "cool."

Owning a gun doesn't have to entail the idea of killing a person either. Lots of people own guns for purely sporting purposes that are kept unloaded and locked up tight and would never even think about shooting anyone even in self-defense.
I may have been a bit harsh here, but if one says the top reason to own guns is that they are "cool", then it sounds as if it was just an accessory to show off. Kinda like a Rolex watch. Everyone should know you have a gun, everyone should see you have a gun; just to make sure no-one thinks you are a pansy. Not the most mature/responsible attitude, imho.
It is possible I am reading a bit too deep into this, however.

Not a real gun, but an electro taser, and I have always to hand it over after the work is over.
But when used in the wrong hands, it can be as deadly as a stabbing knife or something.
Have you ever used it on a prisoner just for fun?

Only if someone snitches on you are if he dies or something.
Believe it or not, but seriously every staff member as well as the inmates themselves are obligated to snitch when they see somebody acting in a horrible fashion like that!
It's a system that works, I must add, for it's keeping the resistance level in the inmates at a pretty low standard all the time and thus our work in general much more comfortable! :)

I would agree if you substituted "most" with "many" in your statement.
There are perfectly good reasons to own a gun. Even for mature, mentally stable, law-abiding people who do not have problems with self-esteem.

By emotional or mental instability, I was neccesarily referring to people who may have a diagnosed medical or physcological disorder, but rather that when the gun was purchased, the person may not have been thinking in a rational and balanced way.
