Do any of you play any MMORPG (massively multiplayer role playing game). Recently I started playing Guild Wars and I loved it. This is my first RPG and I am so much into it that I do not think I will get Civ4 (although I was so looking forward to that one). I just do not have time (and also in the interests of conjugal peace and harmony :) ) to play both games.

(poll coming up)

The only one I've ever had any real interest in was EVE-Online, but I don't have time to play it much so it's not worth paying the subscription...

The nice thing about Guild wars and the reason I picked it out of so many of the other games of teh same genre is that they have no monthly subscription. you buy the game and play it forever. SO if i feel sick of it I can just stop and then pick up again when I feel like it.

I don't, at least partly because I think I'd probably be far more hooked on that type of game than I am on single-player strategy games. They didn't call it Evercrack for nuthin'.

Yes. World of Warcraft addicted. Got Civ 4 delivered today so now I am having serious priority problems.

Yeah, playing World of Warcraft.

I don't like the whole "MMORPG" concept, though. It's mainly because it's the Warcraft's world, that I've practically grown with, and most of my friends play here.

lol, it is like crack. If you do not get to play it for a while you feel like you missing it.

Now imagine this. if this type of role playing is so addictive, imagine 25-50 years from now when they have full VR and complete immersion. So you actually see and feel yourself in the EverCrack world! I think some of us (and it may include me!) will never come out of it.

Guild Wars is nice as you can literally hop in for just an hour and just play it. Unfortunately, it does not necessarily mean you will "beat" what you try to attempt but thats beside the point if you are just trying to have fun.

I would not classify Guild Wars as an MMORPG though as it is not technically persistent (all levels are instanced so you won't happen to stumble across another group doing the same level, which is a pro and con). But everything is on 3, (American, European, and Korean), with a one second no-hassle switch into international districts if you want to connect with them. This results in huge (spamtastic) city populations which more than make up for any possible feelings of emptiness.

Yes for the poll.

I'll start the EverCrackers Anonymous organization, and for a small monthly fee I will agree to rescue anyone that doesn't return to reality every seven days.

Anyway, hypnosis is far better than MMPROG games. :p

@Specious5: I love that instancing feature. If I feel like having company I hop into a town and meet so many people. If I want a little quiet and solo time for myself I can do that too. Best of both worlds.

No. I used to play MUDs, but dropped out of that sphere before the graphical interfaces started showing up. Honestly, I'd love to rejoin the hive mind, but it's not possible at the moment. You see, I have small children. The compromise I reached with my wife was that I could continue my gaming habit, but with the one condition that any game I played have a 'pause' button that I could hit at any time for any length of time. That unfortunately rules out most MMORP games for now.

Eventually, though, that limitation will go away, and at that point, I'll probably dive in, get addicted like never before, and eventually come home to find the locks changed. ;)

that rules out civ3-civ4 too doesn't it? You cannot really hit pause at any time in civ3 either (e.g. in between turns).

No, but I don't have to watch the inter-turn either. Sure, I'd like to, but it's not necessary. :)

There is some leeway here. I can even get away with relatively small-scale multiplayer RTS matches. She doesn't mind if I want to block off an hour or three every now and then. But a MMORPG is unlikely to stay so constrained, especially given my predilection for gaming addiction. So in the interests of marital harmony, I abstain for now.

Though as friend and friend (now joined by you, damn it) harped on the glories of Guild Wars, I was tempted. So very, very tempted....

I've tried a few, none have been worth the subscription costs, and they all seem very similar. They need more variation.

No

But used to play UO, eve-online beta, Ragnarok Beta, WoW.
Thou I found wow addictive it failed to hold my attention for more then four week trial period.

I like the idea of MMORPGs but unfortunately none of them seem to have terribly much to them. They all seem pretty repetitive and pointless to me. I realise that much of the enjoyment comes from the communities, but I never got into that. I tried EVE after reading glowing reviews and having two of my flatmates play it for a year, but I got bored of it after the two week trial :(

I've heard a lot of good things about WoW, but I don't know if it'd be any different. The two that really interest me are Warhammer Online (I had heard they cancelled it, a quick google search says differently) and Middle Earth online, which sounds awesome but seems like it's going to be pretty limited at launch (only Eriador) so I'll probably wait a bit.
