DocT6: Celtic Retreat

Please skip me if I come up before about February 2. I had a trip planned from the 28th to the 1st anyway, and my time between now and then is going to be taken up trying to aquire a car that isn't dead as a doornail.

Good luck. :)

Dunno what to say. The DoW will also trash our rep.
Theology will come in IBT; don’t lower lux, we’ll loose the Ivory, and we don’t want the capital to riot.
Why is that Doc? I can't even see the Vikings capital, but it seems improbable, that we trade with them through British waters.

Edit: In fact, it is not improbable, but impossible. We can't trade maps with the Vikings, so our trade route must be coastal/sea only and that is not possible through English lands. It is either a route se of Hareid or nw of Bodo.

I will play now; if England fails the attack it does not look that grim imo.

Pre: Switch Ard Mhacha to aqueduct as it is already size 6 and does not need a granary right now. Switch Luimneach to settler as we can still fill two spots next to Ard Mhacha.

IBT: England declares as expected, archer and spear die to our spear, which is promoted to elite. Vikings complete Sun Tzu's. We learn Theology.

560AD: Trade route is still intact. Lux down to zero and mm cities for the war-happiness we gained. Baile Átha Cliath is switched from Sun Tzu's to Sistine Chapel. I do not expect we have a good chance at it, but we can still fall back to the Knight's Templar, if we get the tech in time. Since it is too expensive to buy, I set research on chivalry. I thought a lot about that deceision; since the Vikings missed education and printing press, we could try to get one of them first, but I would have fueled their research even more.

...

590AD: Sell currency around to fuel our deficit research. France gives 24, America 21 and Rome 11.

IBT: English show a galley near Ard Mhacha again and land 2 horses next to Caiseal.

600AD: Gaelic swordsman kills horse and we enter our golden age. Warrior kills the other horse.

IBT: Vikings settle Karlstad near Ard Mhacha. Germany now has chivalry too. It haggle with them to buy republic and chivalry, but no avail - they want monotheism and engeneering for both techs.

610AD: Doire is switched from settler to courthouse. It can be a quite good city, although it needs a court, an aqueduct and a harbor, but this game will be a long one and this should pay off.

IBT: The Germans start Knight's Templar in Frankfurt - that looks not like a problem too me.

620AD: Sistine Chapel is due in 10 atm, but will increase one turns, since we can't burn 3 food for 10 more turns.

IBT: The Vikings completes Leonardo's Workshop.

...

640AD: Renegotiate ivory/sheep deal with the Vikings. They add 3gpt and 3gold (should have done that 3 turns sooner).

IBT: Chivalry - Printing Press.

650AD: Sistine's due in 9 atm. We can keep it that fast.

A lot of notes:

Baile Átha Cliath has to stay for 4 more turns on 24spt at -1fpt. It can then switch one desert to a coast for the remaing 5 turns.
Gailleamh will finish our fourth galley and imo that should be our last for now - an aqueduct would be good there.
Ard Mhacha can switch from mountain to grassland once the mine completes there.
Two of our galleys are fortified/unmoved, the third carries a settler and a MDI near Ard Mhacha. I would either settle the gold hill or the northernmost spot of this isle, which would need a temple first to get the whale and a fish. Beware an English landing on that isle, since the galleys come out of the fog from Nottingham.

The forestry map:

I marked the spots I chopped, so you we know where not to chop a second time after replanting. Since chopping will imo play a big role for us in the next turns, we should continue the map, though after the current chop, we will need to replant near Luimneach first. I don't know which spots we already chopped sooner in the game.

War with England

They are no big threat, they are backwards and miss iron, so it might be a good idea to get as much of their land as possible with knights.

Rebuplic?

I have not bought this tech yet, since it is still very expensive (only Germany and the Vikings have it). Since we will not revolt during our GA, I would wait with getting it till it ends and the tech is cheaper.

Looks like a nice set of turns. I'm hoping the Vikings used up their best cities on SunTzu's and Leo's. Leave us one wonder, Ragnar, for Pete's sake! :)

Here's a happy (honest, not being sarcastic!) thought: the Vikings have already burned through their golden age, having built the Lighthouse and then the SoZ. I had a horrible thought when I saw them get SunTzu that they might be in it now -- had to go back and check what else they'd built. So at least the game's monster civ isn't going to have a middle ages GA with their 'zerks.

How close/far away are we from being able to take the war to English soil?

edit: re forestry -- I didn't chop anything in my turns.

760 AD (7):

ask myself why the 10 turns suddenly don't go from 650-750 and stop...sorry (played 10.x turns)

notes:
prepared units to attack england (settler lacking, ship next to doire ready)
suggest to build some embassies
didn'd trade republic from ragnar, we should buy it from russians imo (and soon too)
hope somebody gets edu soon, our prebuild is finished in 3 turns (market)

The Pre-build is not a problem. There is enough room to slow production working sea tiles.
I did not even consider Cope's as an option. How about a side tripto Music Theory and Bach's before Shakes?
The Republic will have to wait until the GA ends.
With PP, I can see several people that have yet to meet. Some GPT contact sales will help our research.
I should have the truns done by mid afternoon.

760AD-0 Drop the production rate in Baile's market for Education to arrive first. Swap Beal to market to better use our GA production. Gailleamh swaps to courthouse. It was building a pike w/o a barrack. Cill starts their aqueduct. Our scientist become taxmen.

IBT Engilsh horse rides down from north of Ard Mhacha.

770AD-1 Luimneach aqueduct-->market Attack and sink an english galley near Ard Mhacha.

IBT

780AD-2 Beal market-->pike Doire settler-->settler Drop two knights, an MI and a Pike near York.

IBT Kill two archers, two chariots and a horse losing a knight. Vikings start on Cope's.

790AD-3 Baile Atha Luain court-->temple Bring troops back to Caiseal to heal.

IBT Ard Mhacha riots at the end of the GA. Scroll ahead to prevent any more.

800AD-4 Russian has now met everyone so I cannot get The Republic with our adding gold.

IBT The Vikings start on Magellan's.

810AD-5 Not much.

IBT The Spear in Ard defeats two horses.

820AD-6 Beal Feirste pike-->pike Germany will talk peace if we give him 60g. Buy Ragnar's WM for 1g. He suggested 16g. Adding my WM was insulting so I went as low as I could. Our map did not update?

IBT Ragnar demands our TM and 23g. We cannot afford the WM now. Horse and charriot landed by Ard Mhacha and a spear/archer pair landed by Caiseal.

830AD-7 Corcaigh knight-->market Doire settler-->settler Kill the landing by Caiseal. Germany and Russia now have invention.

IBT Ard Mhacha retreats the horse and kills the chariot.

840AD-8 Education-->Music Theory Switch Baile Atha Cliath to university. It is set to 11 turns with 11 turns to MT to give us some time to see if it is worth going for Bach's. Reup sheep for wines with Ragnar with an extra 1GPT+4g.

IBT Archer/spear pairs arrive at Caiseal and Ard Nhacha

850AD-9 Beal pike-pike I have two galleys taking a settler to the north end of the Ard Mhacha island. There were too many english galleys around to send it alone. One galley from Caiseal is heading to Doire to pick up 2 settlers. They can go to the tundra island to the west or drop one on the gold mine NW of Luimneach. I have not purchased Republic. Russia will take Education and our cash for it.

I will let her claim it tomorrow. We have/had a job fair today at School and I am going to be busy filling out apps to try and land a job that will put me on the good side of the poverty line.

Hi, I'm back, and I'll take it. Might take me until Thursday to finish the turns -- it's late, and tomorrow night's already shot for Civ.

Good luck with the job thingie, romeo. :)

Got it from the attack on Caiseall on the first interturn. (850-860) :D

Thought it merited some discussion.

(The following is edited, because, as mentioned, I am a dingbat. )

The English have very conveniently left us a target to shoot at with the army I assume we're about to build -- the spear that just pillaged our sugar tile. However, if we wish to use our new army anywhere but on the itty bitty island that Caiseal is on, we can't load more than one unit into it at this time. The best unit we have available is an elite knight; we also have a couple of vet MIs, a vet gallic, and the elite*pike. Thoughts on how best to go about this? I have visions of happy pillaging in England if we can keep the army alive long enough to get it there and load it fully.

Comments are welcome; I'm off to take the nap I so obviously need. I'll play the rest of the turnset in a few hours.

Renata

If we bring the leader back to Baile, we're a shoe-in for Bach's.
MGL can't rush large wonders. I don't understand this comment.
