Ive always wondered what causes bipolar disorder but just never bothered to ask, I don't know all the details because I didn't pay that much attention, but I was born with the chemical imbalance, as opposed to developing it, it just took my teenage years to kick start it and actually have some serious effect. As far as I know, from all the doctors Ive talked to, because I was born with the imbalance, medication for it and the like just screw me up even more. I was just wondering what exactly causes it, Ive been really considering getting into this kind of research when Im older you know.

There are many genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can contribute no doubt.

I found medication ****ed me up worse too.

Excersise, strong social ties, eating well, sleeping regular hours (says the man posting at 2:49AM :crazyeye: ), etc. all help. The main thing though is to realize all emotional states are transient and try to love them (and yourself) rather than fearing them. IMO, fearing the horror that is depression is one of the major factors in depression. Back in Spring of 2000 I kind of made of my mind (though I didn't quite realize it as such) that I would never again be afraid of depression and that I wouldn't let myself be drawn into the spiral of it. Not saying it's always that easy, especially when you're young and confused and in bad situations but knowing that you can break free of it (and other mental health conditions) is the first step to doing it.

Back to the original question, I don't think anyone can tell you for sure what exactly causes any personality trait or emotional tendency. Anyway who tries is trying to sell you something (drugs most likely, or possibly religion ;)).

Anyway, good luck! Carpe diem! :salute:

Try changing the medicine. Doctors don't usually know what is the best medicine, they just try until they find the right one. (It isn't doctors fault, because nobody knows what works before it's tried).

plainly put, we can speculate... but NOBODY knows what causes bi-polar disorder for sure... not yet anyways.

Two reasons why i wont do this
1. I was born with the imbalance, so my body thinks thats what my levels are supposed to be, medacine cant help that becuase my body will just fiddle around with the hormones to get them back around the same spot but only worse becuase my body tries to compensate while the medacine is trying to "fix" for normal levels.
2. f the medacine doenst work, its possibly the worst thing Ive ever had to expierience becuase that stuff screws you up bad.

The Civfanatics forums.

Crazy therapists and their made up diseases.

Medication is rarely the answer to sickness. It's best to let your body slug it out.

I've no idea

Yes yes i no it's a disorder but most what is wrong is in people's head.

Keep in mind that the brain is a bit like an organ. Something can actually be wrong with it, and this something cannot be fixed merely by wishing it so. Unlike many other organs, though, sometimes you can fix part of the brain by wanting to.

We don't know what causes bipolar disorder. And I know how hellish it is for some people.

My best advice is to track your cycles. One really simple mechanism is to learn to recognise when you're up and when you're down; and to know that it's a function of your brain, not your real life.

And if you want to get into this type of research, I wish you luck. There will be need for this type of research for a long time to come. These types of disorders are really common in society.

If you think so, but I wouldn't rule them out completly. While others can have very unpleasant effects, others can do miracles. But of course it's no use if you don't think so.

Along Narz' advices: try to sleep regurarly and avoid alcohol and drugs. I know people who get very bad vibes even from nicotine and caffeine.

Some people claim to be helped by medication, but I wouldnt recommend it. People should learn to live with their depression, like people with other disabilities learn to live with theirs. When one suffers from depression, its who you are. Dont try to banish it. Jump into it, swim around in it, get to know it and then learn to cope. Like Narz said, depression is nothing to be afraid of. Its part of who you are, just like all your other traits. Know thyself. Or to put it another way, as they say in the military: Embrace the suck.

Sometimes medication is just a way not to confront the real problems. Some times it's the only cure. People who don't want to live aren't usually very keen on trying to live with their depression. Medication isn't the ultimate solution, but it can make finding solutions much easier.

Im sure medication works for some people, but to me it seems like a dead end. It doesnt lead to anything. You just keep taking pills.

For you sure, but you aren't everybody and I'm pretty sure you don't have bipolar disorder.

The real solution is to take responsibility for your emotions.
I don't think is a real solution. You just need to learn to live with it, and drugs can help in this endeavor.

I don't think you guys understand what it is fully, its not normal depression, its not caused because suzzy dumped me or bill said I was dumb, its a literal imbalance, it comes from nothing but an inherent imbalance which is why the suicide rates for bipolars is so hi. There is no physical tangible cause for it, so its not like I can go get back with suzzy and things are better, when its there its there, I really just hope that they can find some way to fix it though, I'm not as bad as I used to be but I used to get cycles all the time.
