Domination Help

I really need help with a domination victory. I recently played a Continents map with Julius (where I conquered the whole continent) and a Pangea map with Stalin (where I defeated Hannibal and was on the verge of crushing Kublai Khan but he became a vassal of Montezuma). But I keep running into severe financial difficulties and couldn't keep up with with other civilisations in tech and couldn't invade them or was invaded myself. Should I keep every city and settle cities when I'm ready or hold every city, destroy civilisation, build improvements and roads then invade another civilisation and do the same thing or is there another way for a long term domination victory? Please help me.

Just to toot my own horn a little, have a look at some of my ALC games (links in my sig). The Montezuma, Hatshepsut, Louis, and Frederick games were domination wins, so you might get some hints there.

Generally:

• If you're playing as Julius Caesar, bee-line first to Iron Working, then to Code of Laws so you can build those cheap courthouses to reduce maintenance costs in the cities you conquer.
• Cottages, cottages, cottages.
• Of course, cottage spam is only the first step. Your best cottage cities need markets, grocers, and banks to really take off, and science multipliers as well.
• Follow the cycle of warring, building your economy, then warring again.
• As for cities--early in the game, keep the best and raze the rest. The AI builds many cities in questionable locations, such as 1 tile in from the sea; raze these and build a better-located city later on.

Yes, have a look at some of the links in Sisiutil's sig. Generally, plant a cottage relatively early (pop 3 or so on some grasslands or flood plains), get those axes rolling, smash 2-4 AI cities keeping only the best 1-2. Then make peace, get the economy strong again and repeat those first steps. Takes a little practice to get it down and you will make a few mistakes but eventually you will master warmongering.
