Don Deity: Warlords 2.08, huge random continents map, epic speed

I've got a bad feeling about this.

Camelot would make a better capital than London. I'll give you that. Protect your cities facing Alex. Lack of strong garrisons will encourage Alex to attack.
Good luck with this war.

Scarredroman is right, Alex is a bad neighbor. I suffered last three days on prince level.

A bar… …somewhere strange… …somewhere VERY strange…

…

“Finally, Don Deity… …it took you quite long to get here…”

“I was already in bed… …have to be at work early tomorrow… …what’s so important that I had to drop by here immediately?”

“Slow, down Don Deity… …take a seat first… …here’s your beer… …and now listen, I have great news for you… …I have discussed your interesting civilisation dilemma with some friends… …and they brought up some quite good ideas… …and one even came up with a map:

This map was contributed by EEE_BOY

Brilliant isn’t it?”

“I don’t know… …but if you say so…”

“Yea… …and even better… …we also came up with a plan… …you WILL attack Bren…”

“Will I?”

“Yes, you will… …and now listen to me, and listen closely… …I have prepared a second map… …on the basis of the first one:

64.JPG

See the spot marked with a pink &?”

“Yes… …but isn’t there a sort of universal law that important spots have to be marked with a red X?”

“What?”

“I mean, if everybody would start marking important landmarks with things like $, %, ! or even a very experimental > how would our maps look in the end…”

“Forget about the pink &… …have another beer and just imagine it being a red X…”

“But I can’t….”

“With a vodka maybe?”

“Yes… …that MIGHT do… …but YOU pay…”

“Sure… …but now back to the map and the pink &… …umh… …I mean the red X… …you will set up a trap there for Bren…”

“Can I have another vodka? It still looks way too &ish and pink to me…”

“Argh… …and I suppose I pay again?”

“Yes… …off course… …why?”

“Forget about it… …there it comes… …but now back to the map and the RED X… …as mentioned before, you will prepare a trap for Bren there… …and with a little luck, this will decide your next war right from the start...”

“Sounds good…”

“Would you please stop interrupting me all the time?”

“Umh… …sorry…”

“Thanks… …you need about 15 of your best battalions, you will hide behind Hastings, where the RED X is… …hm... ...in the beginning, maybe only 10 battalions will do, because it will take Bren some time to move his army there once you declared war, but you have to send all new battalions of grenadiers there to strengthen them BEFORE the bulk of Bren’s army arrives… …and in Hastings, you will only leave a single battalion of longbows for defence… …IF this plan works out, Bren will think that Hastings is only very lightly defended and will send the bulk of his army there, and wont even bother to build one HUGE stack of doom, but rather approach with two or three smaller ones… …and these you can take on then with your hidden veterans quite easily thanks to your superior technology (grenadiers and cavalry against knights, maces and longbows).

“That’s a quite cool plan… …I like it…”

“Yes, I knew you would… …but this is only half of the plan… …see the green &?”

“Would you please order me two vodkas more… …you know… …only to make it more Xish…”

“Argh… …don’t push it to far Don Deity… …there you go… …but now back to the GREEN X… …while your hidden soldiers wait for Bren’s army to march into their doom, you will station your offensive forces at the GREEN X… …and once you have declared war on Bren, you will march immediately towards Durnovaria and lay siege to the city… …your goal is to capture it BEFORE Bren can react and strengthen his defences there… …then you move ALL men from your offensive force into Durnovaria and have them fortify there. By doing so, you will cut of Bren’s access to Chinook completely and the only way for him to advance towards England is either through the heavily fortified Durnovaria or through the apparently weak defended Hastings… …which should lead Bren’s army right into your trap…”

“That’s an evil plan… …I like evil plans… …does this make me a bad person by the way?”

“Not really… …how many civilians have you killed lately in India-England?”

“Several millions… …why?”

“Well… …THAT does make you an evil person…”

“Oh… …you want another beer?”

“Yes, please… …but one more thing concerning this map and your dawning war with Bren, Don Deity:

Always remember that timing IS essential… …to make your plan work, you HAVE TO capture Durnovaria in time, so Bren takes the bait and marches for Hastings… …and once you see Bren’s forces approach, you have to make sure, that you have enough units near Hastings to engage his stacks one by one… …you can’t allow him to unite them to ONE big stack… …and I expect him to advance with 2-3 stacks, containing about 20 – 25 units each… …so IF he manages to unite them you are dead…”

“I will try to do my best…”

“Sounds good enough to me… ...and once you have captured Durnovaria and destroyed Bren’s offensive forces, it should be relatively save to start a major assault yourself. Start with advancing from Durnovaria towards Camulodunum, then on towards Tolosa and from there on you should march directly for Bren’s capital, taking only city that are worth it (indicated by the blue arrows in the second map). Leave all the worthless tundra, desert and ice cities to Bren and try to vassalize him as soon as this becomes possible…”

“But I don’t want to vassalize Bren… …one worthless vassal is already enough if you ask me…”

“Maybe… …but some of Bren’s cities are so crappy, that the upkeep costs for them would simply be to high to keep them for yourself… …and razing them doesn’t really help in your quest for world domination… ...and I hate razing cities. So better have Bren pay for them… ...like that at least half of their territory you can count on in your quest for domination… ...and besides, you STILL have to take on Alex at some stage… ...and with Bren and Ash as your vassals covering your left and right flank (and being easy prey), you might have a slightly better chance of surviving that…”

“Well… …if you say so…”

“And again one last thing before I leave… …revolt to theology BEFORE you finish your first battalion of grenadiers… …like that, you can give them two promotions right away…”

“Shouldn’t I revolt to “Free Market” also?”

“Yes, you should… …but you also have to keep in mind your timing… …more important now then adopting "Free Market" is to get the hidden forces near Hastings in place in time… …so you should check how many years (turns) it would take to do both revolutions together and how many years (turns) you need to build enough battalions of grenadiers for our EVIL plan…”

I approve the attack plan, but there is something that worries me, Alex's cultural pressure over Durnovaria.

I was actually thinking on advising to raze it, so a "cultural buffer zone"
would be created, ... but on a second thought, the diplo penalty of "you razed one of our cities" won't help too much on quickly vassalising Bren.

@ Scarredroman & Bis-Mark:

DD is keeping his main attacking forces close to the Greek border, to prevent Alex joining in the war

...

@ Premier Valle:

Razing I wont do, because I don´t raze cities in general, but once DD takes on Alex, he simply can give up Durnovaria, then Alex has a VERY vulnerable city he has to defend

...

@ All:

I already played the first turnest of the Celtic war (which was great to play btw, because the AI really managed to surprise me with quite effectic tactics and even managed to put up a trap for the English troops), so I think I will play on tonight and be able to post a preview maybe tomorrow

Preview:

The Celtic war is over… …and it was going according to plan for something like three turns… …I thought I had some experience in playing huge maps, but playing deity for the first time on such a map turned out to be quite a different experience when waging war (I think the war with Ash doesn’t count, because Ash acted weird right from the start and had absolutely NO army compared to Bren)… …the sheer amount of units Bren was able to field in this war was… …well, let’s just say impressive (you will find out soon :D).

And, quit in contrast to the war with Ash, when the AI didn’t dare to face DD´s army until it was too late, the AI this time apparently got a different result when doing his calculations… …and Bren decided the throw everything he had to face the English invaders right away… …he even managed, most likely completely by accident, to set up a deadly trap for the English units himself, causing terror and death among DD´s units…

..

The next chapters will be:

Introducing… …General Supersnaat
A trap snaps
Caught behind enemy lines
A BIG bloodbath (day 1 – the English assault)
A BIG bloodbath (day 2 – the stand)
A BIG bloodbath (day 3 – with teeth and claws)
The dust settles
Mobilizing ALL reserves

sounds like it'll be very interesting! looking forward to it. hopefully there will be some units left to deal with this alex problem

Well, Bren is a more active chap.I think he lives for battle. Another of your wars goes astray - from your plan.

I've been lurking on this one from the start, and I'm coming out into the open and saying that I'm loving it. Great job, Snaaty.

Snaaty, I have been reading everything while I was a lurker. (like Bestbrian) I love your stories. Anyway, Are you planning to vassalize Alex?

His continent is the most advanced, so he could in theory take all Alex's cities to fuel his empire. unless some civ on the other continent starts to run away in tech department. Alex's cities are all very good.

@ Patricman:

First, welcome here:)

...

@ Patricman & EEE_BOY:

I would love to take all of Alex cities, because EEE_BOY is right about them, but there are four problems:

1. I don´t even know jet how to win a war against Alex because he has more units and is equal or superior in tech

2. Even if DD should manage somehow to wrestle down Alex, Alex might reach machineguns or infantry before the war is over... ...that´s one of the biggest problems when playing deity... ...you never knwo when your war runs out of steem, so I have no idea yet how the war with Alex will turn out

3. This is warlords, not BtS, so the other continents WILL start teching like mad on deity once they have astro and printingpress, so this could also dictate our war against Alex (like EEE_BOY already suspected)

4. Bren did put up quite some resistance (you will find out soon HOW much)... ...DD will have to rely on drafting for the next war to recover his army, so the war against Alex has to be delayed even further

I would have expecteds Bren to throw every unit art you. Those that are closer to your cities than to your attacking forces will attack the cities instead. Unlike Ash or Alex, Bren will defend what seem like lost causes. Alex will play border wars - we take city, he recpatures, we retake, he recaptures etc.

The English redcoat is better than his redcoat and enough cannons will take down machine guns. Enough greandiers will smash Alex's garrsons and cavalry, two of which will usually kill a full-strength machine gunner.

Introducing… …General Supersnaat:

…

65.JPG

…

The market square in London, General Supersnaat, several reporters and about 500 civilians:

“And you are the new general in charge of the whole English army?”

“Yes… … the WHOLE English army… …and I’m in charge”

“So you are highly qualified for this job?”

“No, I’m only Don Deity’s cousi… …umh… …ahem… …I mean I’m highly qualified off course…”

“Aha…but at least, we suppose that you have a good plan for your crusade into the Celtic land?”

“A plan??? Umh… …a plan… …plan…umh… …it’s sort of… …top secret, my plan… …but I have one, really…”

…

Several hours later, General Supersnaat and his leading officers:

“…and we need a plan, off course…”

“But we thought you had one, General Supersnaat.”

“Umh… …this is only a test… …I want to see, if you are able to come up with a plan yourself… …just to compare, you know, with my plan…”

“You there, what would you do?”

“Strategic officer in training, sir, at your command… …I would declare war, but only send in scouts to see the Celt troop movement… …then I would have the bulk of the army wait inside our borders and fortifications for the Celt counterattack…”

“That’s not a proper plan… …that’s cowardice… …you there, in the background, what would you do?

“I’m only the cleaning women…”

“Doesn’t matter, what’s your plan?”

“Cleaning up here, and then going home…”

…

Two weeks later, the English army is approaching the Celtic border… …so far, there had been only some border tensions in the regions around Chinook the English had lost due the Celt culture pressure, but no open war was declared… …but this would change immediately, once the English army would cross the border…

…

Two English officers riding ahead of the English army:

“When did you receive your final orders from General Supersnaat?”

“Yesterday, and you?”

“Also yesterday… …what are your orders?”

“They are pretty simple… …but apparently it has taken General Supersnaat almost two week to come up with them:

Advance on Durnovia… …capture Durnovia… …advance on Camulodunum… …capture Camulodunum… …advance on Tolosa… …capture Tolosa… …and so on.”

“Mine are exactly the same… …and I suppose those of the others also… he even added a map, look:”

66.JPG

“But that’s not his writing… …I don’t think he drew this himself, the map is WAY too good for this…”

“Do you really think that his so called “PLAN” will work out?”

“I have no idea…”

…

Don Deity’s palace in London, Don Deity and General Supersnaat:

“You ordered ALL men to advance towards Durnovia???”

“Yes, I plan to advance with ALL forces…”

“But I told you to leave some troops near Hastings so we can defend Old England against Bren’s army and set up the TRAP we already talked about…”

“But that’s cowardice… …we should advance with…”

“No, we shouldn’t… …you WILL stick to MY plan. And therefore you will order at least 10 battalions of decent units towards…”

“But I don’t want to…”

“I don’t care… …you WILL sent some units back to Hastings and I will command them myself…”

“Grumble… ….grumble…”

“What was that?”

“I said “Yes Don Deity”… …grumble…”

…

Another week later, in the market square of Durnovaria, the victorious General Supersnaat, some reporters (imported from London) and some soldiers (pretending to be happy civilians):

67.JPG

“A glorious victory, general Supersnaat…”

“Yes, I know, I was good, very good…”

“It looks like you are preparing a party here?”

“Yes, off course, I have to celebrate my glorious victo… …I mean, we need to motivate our soldiers with a big victory party…”

“Aha… …but Durnovaria was only a quite unimportant borderland city between England, Greek and Celt… …so what makes you think this is already a glorious victory?”

“We have not only captured Durnovaria, we have also destroyed the Celtic army completely… …so I don’t expect much resistance on our way into the Celtic mainland now… …that’s why I already have sent a part of our army ahead, direction Camulodunum…”

“Wow… …you seem to have defeated the HUGE Celtic army quite easily… …how many men did you have to face in the end?”

“More then 30 battalions, armed up to their teeth…”

“Really?”

“OK… …it was more like 15 battalions, and quite poorly equipped…”

“But wasn’t the Celtic army expected to be WAY bigger???”

“Everybody keeps telling me that… …but I simply don’t believe it.”

A shout from the background:

“General Supersnaat, there are important news for you…”

“Not now, can’t you see I’m busy?”

“But it’s REALLY important… …the Celtic army is approaching…”

“What… …but I have just destroyed the Celtic army…”

“No you haven’t… …you have only defeated the city garrison of Durnovaria… …and some quickly drafted local reinforcements…”

…

Some minutes later, emergency meeting, General Supersnaat and the remaining officers in Durnovaria:

“There were so many of them, that our informant hasn’t been able to spot them all, General Supersnaat…”

“Who is this informant… …and why should we trust his information?”

“He is one of the priests working in the monastery in Tolosa… …and he’s loyal… …since Don Deity is now officially the head of the Hindu Church (after capturing the Hindu Holy City, Bombay), he would never lie to us…”

“But IF Bren still has some units left, what I STILL don’t believe by the way, they will very likely march towards Hastings, no?”

“We hope so… …but if they decide to march in our direction, we are in BIG trouble… …and our informant said that the Celtic army gathering there might be so big, that they might even consider facing us, NOT marching into Don Deity’s trap…”

“So you want to say, that we should retreat our men from Camulodunum, and abort our advance, IF Bren’s army REALLY exists and REALLY moves towards our direction?”

“I have already ordered the units back, you have sent ahead towards Camulodunum (ignoring Don Deity’s initial orders by the way)… …but I fear they won’t make it back in time here, IF Bren’s army is really heading our way…”

“Oh my good, this would be terrible… …what am I supposed to do now?”

General Supersnat was spot on wanting to take all the troops. Since he didn't, he's now caught with his pants down. I'd have hit Camelot first.

I'm curious if general Supersnaat is able to defeat the counter attack.

Is it an idea to combine the forcesses at Camulodunum and make a stand there. Or will the taking of Camulodunum cost too many troops?
