Don't Flush Your Fish

Having not seen Finding Nemo yet, I know the basic idea behind the story. Anyhow, while reading through my news highlights today I happened to cross this story and it just made me crack up:

Kids Be Warned: Don't Flush Your Fish

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Kids be warned: Flushing your pet fish down the drain will not send it safely into the ocean as depicted in the new computer-animated movie "Finding Nemo."

A company that manufactures equipment used to process sewage issued a news release Thursday warning that drain pipes do lead to the ocean — eventually — but first the fluid goes through powerful machines that "shred solids into tiny particles."

"In truth, no one would ever find Nemo and the movie would be called 'Grinding Nemo,'" wrote the JWC Environmental company, which makes the trademarked "Muffin Monster" shredding pumps.

In the unlikely event Nemo survived the deadly machines, the company added, he would probably be killed by the chlorine disinfection.

So be careful everyone! When you flush your fish know where they are going before you actually try it! (In California at least.)

I've heard that similar problems arise from animal-related children's films. I believe Sean Lindstrom gave a pretty detailed explanation about how they portray all the positives about pets and other animals while ignoring the responsibilities that are necessitated by such ownership. This results in some pretty messy ordeals.

Good point. After the movie 101 Dalmatians came out, thousands of kids got dalmatian puppies, but many of the dogs were given away or got rid of. The movie did not show how inbred and high-strung dalmatians are, and how excitable and energetic they are. They need lots of room to run around, and most families simply don't have the necessary space. Dalmatians also are not the best dogs around kids, having a tendency to bite when provoked.

There's also the point that most aquarium fish (guppies, tetras, goldfish, etc.) are freshwater fish. They die quite quickly if put into saltwater.

It's a friggin animated disney movie, not a documentary, who gives a crap if it doesn't make total sense, they are talkign fish for christ sake.

Actually the storm drain doesn't (usually) go through treatment systems, so it would work
