Down With The British!

And we may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone
Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks

YES! :D :goodjob:

I don't understand all you people who hate the Confederates. Their secession was simply the logical extension of the principles of the Revolution! If anything, we should celebrate them as patriotic Americans, carrying on the ideals of our forefathers, not decry them as rebel scumbags, only interested in keeping the Black man down. It's worth it to remember that the Constitution did not ban slavery, and that many of our Founding Fathers were, in fact, slave owners.

But of course! However, only South Carolina was constitutionally permitted to secede - all the other states that joined the "Confederacy" broke

Article I Section 10 said:
...No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation...

that. Therefore, all the states that joined the rebellion after SC were acting unconstitutionally.

Our Rebellion against the crown was illegal, too, does that make it wrong?

Nope!

We actually won our rebellion...

If you are going to rebel, you damn well win.

If you're arguing that secession was righteous because it was done in the name of preserving the rights and liberties of the Southern States, the fact that they had no interest in preserving the rights and liberties of the Blacks is significant. Because it means that they are hypocrites for decrying the North's authoritative rule while enforcing(In their Constitution I might add!) their own brand of oppression. How do you found a county for liberty while actively campaigning against it?(This is the same hypocrisy the Nation as a whole committed)

You can argue that the South had a right to secede because the North stunk all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that the South indeed stunk as well. Meaning neither is defensible. People's replies that the North was bad as well only serves to corroborate this point.

The united States in 1776 was no different from the South in 1861 in terms of being "right or wrong" in the regard you just described.

That is exactly what I said. Actually I agree with you saying that the Secession was a logical extension of the Revolution. It was a logical continuance of the hypocrisy of it, undeniably.

Please forgive, I'm at the bottom of a bottle of Zinfandel. :)

Hypocrisy by modern measures, but not anachronistically so.

You mean slaves right? Because not all slaves were black and not all slave owners were white. There were free blacks too you know. There were even black CSA soldiers who fought for the south. Not forced slaves.

It's not even the 4th yet, and this thread celebrating Independence Day has ALREADY been sidetracked into a comparison of the Civil War. Gotta love OT. :p

O beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

O beautiful, for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!

O beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
'Til all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine!

O beautiful, for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

I love this country.

Ah, it's the day in the year where Americans celebrate the start of their succesful civil war of secession. Too bad there never was a democratic basis for it :) . Afaik, most historians 'guess' a third of the colonists supported the rebellion (generally, the richer ones), a third was against it and a third didn't really care.

However, it's a good thing it all resulted in what is imho the world's finest democratic constitution ever made.

Indeed old chap, these colonials have no respect at all, no respect at all my lad!

The worst thing is that they prefer the horrific, abominable, atrocious and gruesome sport of baseball above the noble game of cricket.

Yes, it is a terriable shame!

Nice work pointing this out btw:
