DPII's Unit Previews

hey DP,
why don't you conduct a lottery/deli contest also?

after all, variety is the spice of life. :smoke:

Polite answer: Because it's possible the winning choice will involve models I don't have and can't make.

Actual answer: Although the "polite answer" also holds true, it's because I'd really hate to have to make something stupid that somebody might come up with... it seems like in every lottery, there's always something somebody suggests that makes me smack myself in the forehead. In this case, there's quite a few of those.

Well, I ran into pallette issues (I hate pallettes) and so I decided I'd keep working on that and finish up the Numidian Cavalry and release it, the elephant, and the Balearic Slinger all as one big Carthaginian Pack.

I found a nice little trick that makes palette work a piece of cake... if you use Jasc PSP. There's a "PaletteFromImage" option where it takes all the colors you have in the picture. You can also set how many colors it's allowed to use. There are 160 spots left out of the 256 after you subtract the essential colors, so you can set it at 160 colors and it automatically gives you the best and most valuable colors for the entire unit. I don't know about other programs, but I'm assuming they'd all have something similar. If this helps at all. Otherwise, feel free to ignore it. :)

That will be great for my Punic War Scenario :D

Yeah, unfortunately, I use Photoshop, so that doesn't really help

What I really wish was that we could just render the damned thing in 256 color mode... that'd make life so much easier.

Or if all the programs accepted 24-bit images, to take palette work completely out of the equation. :) Oh how nice that'd be.

I'm surprised photoshop doesn't have the same ability, but since I've never used the program, I wouldn't know. :)

oh and BTW... I had the same reaction with a lot of the requests in the lottery, but then again I'm sure my request had a lot of people smacking their foreheads too.

Me being one of them... :p jk

Also, yes, I'd love it if the game accepted 24-bit images.... however, I don't even know if that'd be possible.

Photoshop may very well have the same ability... actually... I think I just found it. :p But it doesn't give me the palette in the form I need it... with the colors where I need them... not to mention the fact that I've got like 12 different colors of pink I don't need ;)

then specify a range, or more specifically, the exact models you have or have access to. :mischief:

this way, you could omit all of those silly elves and flying horses.

of course i'd understand if you wouldn't want to do it but to eliminate the weird requests right from the get-go would be refreshing.

Actually, the real problem is that I COULD do the flying horses and elves... it's some of the cooler stuff I can't do because of lack of models...

PSP doesn't give them in the form I need them either. What I do is take a snap (with Hypersnap or any other way you can do it) of the palette, open up PEdit, load the essential colors, and fill in the rest from the picture of the 160 colors PSP gave me. Might sound like a bit of a process, but I find it much easier than combing over a picture making sure I get everything. Plus this way you're guarunteed to get the best possible palette.

okay. i understand.

my real wish would be to see you make another set (even 1 unit would suffice!) of Asian foot units; a sort of ind/modern follow-up on your 1st excellent set :bounce:

Well, then I need concept work, man! Dammit, Jim, I'm a unit maker, not a fortune teller!

I mean, are we talking real-world units, or hypothetical ones without European influence?

CamJH: I wasn't really impressed with the colors it picked out for me... it put way too many pinks and really skimped on some of the more important colors I needed, so I think I'll just stick with my way.
