Dr.NES - The D.O.O.M. Project

What are your orders, sir?
Ruben frowns. Seeing the dead bodies didn't bother him any, but not knowing what killed them did. He shook his head and began issuing orders.

"We'll stay here for long enough to get a better grip on the situation. We need to take a closer look at these bodies. I want to know what sorts of weapons killed them, and where the shooters were. If we can find some shell casings, that'd be ideal... Be sure to compare the wounds and casings to the weapons they're carrying.

. . .

"[Then] We'll keep pushing through to Village C, assess the situation there . . ."

{OOC: Confirming that this is my final answer. ;)}

"Hey louis, you carry all those medic packs with no where to go? Toss one to Niki just in case man, you carry the stuff and he patches us up dig?"

"Something I have been meaning to request Jaguar. I can clearly see the researchers have been pumped full of lead but can you help me establish the shot pattern and roughly which shot killed them and when said shot was fired? This is a tall order and probably, from your point of view, a pointless endeavour. From my point of view it is the key to understanding the assailant and what he might do. So will you please help me in this, it won't take long?

I will take a look at it. It will most likely take a lot of time, and would hold us up for a while. Ruben has the final say, but I will be willing to do the best I can if permitted.

"As am I Jaguar. Working together we should be able to find the pattern, your job, and work out the killer's state of mind, my job, by the time Ruben and the other have finished their detailed search of the surroundings. If not then we take some photos (Do we have any equipment capable of taking photographs Dread?) and move on."

Posted by Dreadnought@Vert: Did anyone bring a camera with them? In their inventory?

....My inventory isn't defined yet : ). Aside that, do we submit orders or state what we're doing?

Update 5
Village C

The circumstances had become less that admirable. The research team had been located, but their information had proven to conjure more questions and fewer answers. The addition of two more squad members, however, was controversial and mysterious: their status was questionable at best, and veritably dubious at worst. Still, it was the infallible observation of the squad as a whole that the mission needed to reach a successful conclusion.

Magnus turned to the Jaguar. “Could you check what happened to the researchers?”

The Jaguar grunted and knelt along the dirt, inspecting the carcasses. They had been shot numerous times each, from all directions. It did not seem to be the work of a skilled marksman. The bullet marks, however, did seem to come from both small arms fire and heavier weaponry.

“Looks like the work of irregulars,” remarked the Jaguar.

“Village C,” said O’Neill, “is where we need to go now. It brings us closer to the other researchers, and lets us check the status of the natives there.”

And so they began their trek, each aspiring to finally discover the solution to the events undergoing here. Who had killed those scientists, and what was their motive? Were the murderers still here? It was somewhat disconcerning that those ‘irregulars’ could still be close, and that the mercenaries had no idea who or where they were.

Nevertheless, the hike to Village C was uneventful. The soldiers, especially Sarge, kept a vigilant watch of the surrounding jungle; however, nothing was to be seen.

“We’re almost there,” stated Rachel, her eyes locked on the surrounding landscape.

Their aspirations were wholly unfulfilled when, upon reaching the village, they realized that this site, too, was entirely abandoned, with not a soul in site.

“Damnit,” Reginald cursed, hoping to finally understand this situation.

Dr. Garcia turned to O’Neill, “Look over there. The food is still out, equipment is lying around….it doesn’t appear that they packed up and left.”

O’Neill nodded. “Fan out and search the premise.”

And so they did, each observing the miscellaneous items and empty huts the village possessed. Not a living creature was in sight.

“This isn’t right,” Marcus muttered. He leaned down and opened the flap of one of the huts. Upon entering, a horrid stench overtook him, causing him to curse aloud; he waved his hand before his face like a toddler to disperse the smell. However, upon first glance into the hut, he made a monumental discovery, which caused him to smirk.

A man lay dead in the center of the hut. Not just any man - he wore a military uniform, and beside him was set an AK-47.

“Doc,” he called out, his voice optimistic. “I got something for you to see.”

Dr. Garcia turned to approach the hut, O’Neill nearby. Was this finally the clue they had been looking for?

Sarge stood alone along the edge of the village, his eyes cast upon the nearby woodlands. He was a soldier, not a cleaner. He would allow the others to play hide-and-seek with minor clues; his job was to stand guard, to prevent a disaster from occurring.

When he gazed upon the surrounding jungle, he first noticed the claustrophobic instinct fall upon him. This rainforest, with its overgrown foliage and dark shadows, seemed to completely engulf the tiny village, strangulating the mercenaries as they vainly underwent their ill-mannered foray into the open grounds. Mother nature was choking the soldiers, locking them in an extremely tight noose from which they could not escape.

Sarge shook his head. “I shouldn’t have eaten Terni’s food. It’s giving me indigestion.”

A bird chirped in the distance, causing Sarge to glance in that direction. A second chirp answered the first, this time from the south.

Sarge suspiciously stared into the jungle, trying to locate the source of that sound.

Wait, what was that?

In the distance….that fern shook.

No, it was simply the wind.

There, again! That branch!

I don’t see anything….

Right in front of you!

Sarge squinted, trying to focus on the bush in the distance. Something was there.

And it was aiming its rifle right at him.

“Sh!t,” Sarge cursed. He screamed at the top of his lungs, “Get down! Everyone!” He raised his weapon and shot twice, striking the guerrilla and killing him instantly.

For a single second, Sarge optimistically assumed he had killed the only enemy; that the single guerrilla was the only target.

His hopes were in vain, for there were dozens more of them surrounding the village. Each was approaching from the western jungle, disclosing themselves as they left their hiding place in the deep recesses of the inner forest.

“Look out!” Sarge yelled as he dove for cover behind a hut.

The enemies opened fire, their weapons echoing across the open village.

O’Neill was shot in the chest as he ran for cover. He felt his body collapsing from the impact, twisting in midair as he fell. Nevertheless, his body armor had absorbed the shot; the bullet merely knocked the wind out of him. He lay on the ground for only a moment, the shock and force of the bullet dazing him; then his instincts turned back on, and he crawled into cover clumsily and desperately.

Louis de Bourbon was not so lucky. A bullet struck him in the head, killing him instantly.

“Louis!” Andrew shouted, preparing to run to his aide.

Nigel held him back. “He’s dead; there’s nothing you can do to help him.”

The firefight began. The mercenaries desperately tried to stem the oncoming force of guerrillas, but there were too many; there were several dozen approaching from the west. The foliage aided their advance, ricocheting the mercenaries’ bullets as they attempted to destroy the incoming force. The dead man in the hut was ignored as all the squad members turned their attention to the enemies.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, Sebastiao noticed:

They were coming from the south too. The guerillas were attempting to surround them.

He cried out in Portuguese, but Rachel didn’t understand. “Talk in English!” she retorted angrily as she fired into the jungle.

Nestor understood. “9 o’clock! They’re coming from the south!”

The guerrillas there opened fire, nearly striking Reginald as he adjusted his cover to avoid their shots.

“They’re surrounding us!” The Jaguar called out desperately, his voice loud yet still strong.

“They have the west and south road covered,” Magnus muttered. “They have cut us off….”

"OK, guys, unless we start to move our asses, we will be following Louis into whatever lies after this life," Niki told his companions through the microphones, although he could hardly be heard between all the gunshots in the village. "Only escape route I can think of is the road towards that open field and the ravine. If we go through the ravine, we can hold them back since it isn't wide enought to let too many people enter it at the same time, which would give us the advantage, although we would need to be REALLY fast if we want to reach the ravine before these guys catch up on us!"

OOC: Can I be the first to say: . .. .. .. ., WE'RE TOAST! Also, I'm sorry for the loss of Louis, he might have been a perfect guy if we had to enter in CQC.

OOC: Village C shouldn't have status unknow, but status: We're Screwed.

"God Dammit, I'm gonna miss Louis. We have a huge ass problem on our hands right now. Listen guys, I may sacrifice myself here, but I'm gonna stay here and chuck grenades at these bastards. Have two guys cover me, while the rest of you run east. If worst comes to worst, I will need to set up my C4 as traps as you retreat. We simply can't hold."

"Who has the C4!, someone set some C4 behind some of the huts, when we run and they give chase we will blow them all to pieces."

"The ravine would be a perfect place to put those C4 charges! We just have to keep them away from it while Andrew plants the C4 in there, and once those damned soldiers come here, we activate the C4 and we get rid of a good share of them!"

"I got the damned C4! Listen Doctor! We're nowhere near the damned ravine right now! Nigel, you report our status with your radio, see if they can provide support! I could set up C4 behind the huts, certainly. Alright, I'll set up C4 behind the huts and you cover me. I'll chuck grenades as we retreat to the next hut, and then we'll hightail out of the village. Agreed?"

"We don't have much time to debate this" As a bullet wizzed past Nigel's head. "We have to get out of here before they surround us. They have been following us, waiting for this opportunity. We have to head east, lay low for a while, maybe take to the jungles until we loose them. Andrew, I'll cover you. "

"Andrew, plant one C4 where you are and then we'll cover you while you run back and put other C4 behind other hut! We must cover each other if we want to get out of this alive!"

What the hell are Ruben and Jaguar doing? Niki said, slightly overwhelmed by the situation and using his carbine to kill three enemy soldiers before taking cover again.

OOC: Has anybody noticed that whenever you use the F word the web automatically censors it?

"OK, but if we are going to do that, we have to do it now!"

OOC: Dreadnought, who's who in that photograph (which was clearly taken using characters from Metal Slug)?

I thought those characters were both cool and humorous to use :)

I'll post a new pic with individual names.
