Dr.NES - The DOOM Project: The Sapphire of the Sea

@ Birch: Since you are up there with the captain and the computer, could you get us a map of any detail about the lower levels of the ship?

Ulysses:

"Hang on did they pick certain people to release or to take hostage? If they were only letting certain people go then that is far easier to explain."

The man turned towards the wall. "They went through each group of hostages and picked certain people to be detained. Then they took those people and left the others. I waited for a long time before I had the nerve to move."

@ Birch: Since you are up there with the captain and the computer, could you get us a map of any detail about the lower levels of the ship?

OOC: I'm glad you asked. As soon as I return home I will post an image for you.

Ulysses:

"Check for Spanish political or religious leaders. This could be related to ETA or, possibly, a new group trying to get some big publicity, however that's a long shot as they would have said something by now. Could be picking out people for torture to gain information for an employer. That would be one explanation for the blood in the infirmary and the terrorists general lack of interest in the ship if they are focusing on the people. Also a cruise ship in the middle of the Southern Sea is generally a nice, quiet place to go about such grim business without any interruptions or trouble. Otherwise we start going down dark and increasing implausible roads to try and explain all this. But then this is a DOOM mission and, as others have pointed out, anything could happen."

OOC: I've asked before. I simply assumed we weren't getting one so I stopped.

Don't worry about it. Actually I don't think you missed it. Rather you were busy and Seon found the map with deck four on it so the whole thing slipped under the radar. Certainly a map of decks three to one would be useful, if it's not going to take you an undue amount of time to do.

Sorry about the delay; a paper on nationalism took ten hours too long to complete.

The Floor Plan for Engineering:

Engineering is a large room consisting of three "floors" overseeing the main turbines.

Spoiler :

Key:
White colored areas indicate the area of the first "floor"

Light blue colored areas indicate the area of the second "floor"

Blue colored areas indicate walkways that are both second and third "floor" stacked on top of one another; naturally, since the viewpoint of the diagram is from above, I couldn't depict both the second and third floor walkways separately, so this color indicates that there are two walkways at this location.

Dark blue (or purple-ish) colored areas indicate the area of the third "floor".

Those block-looking things are stairways. Their color corresponds to which floor they are going to, assuming you are on the second floor.

Birch:

@mod: I'll do another search through the passenger list for Spanish religious leaders. After that I'll use my laptop to search for any companies based in Spanish speaking countries that might be competitors to the owner of this crusie ship.

@mod: I'll do another search through the passenger list for Spanish religious leaders. After that I'll use my laptop to search for any companies based in Spanish speaking countries that might be competitors to the owner of this crusie ship.

You find no hits on either account. There are no religious leaders on board the ship, and there are no major Latin American/Spanish cruise companies that are large enough to compete with the owners.

Ilya:

@mod: I ask the man where on the map were the hostages taken.

"I don't know -- I wasn't in Engineering. They kept most of us outside on the second deck."

"... I cannot seem to recall that we were explicitly told not to use torture against hostiles? Is this the case? I was sort of counting on that to extract information in my plan of capturing a hostile. Never mind that, then...

"I don't think you will be able to identify what criteria the hostiles are using to sort hostages without more information. It might actually be a completely strange one, such as left-handedness or whatever. The religious thing was a good bet - I am thinking that the hostiles are probably cultists of some sort, Aum Shinrikyo and the like, just a Spanish(-speaking) one.

"Doc, that bloodstain - could it be from a sort of ritualistic sacrifice? Aztec heart-removal? Something like that?"

Ulysses:

"I was actually thinking that Spanish political or religious leaders who had spoken out against ETA and an independent Basque nation would be an obvious target for the Basque terrorist group, who could have used Spanish if not all the members of this team were fluent in Basque. However the whole idea of a modern-day culture is becoming more and more likely, as we have eliminated most sane motives from the list.

As for torture. It has not been expressly forbidden but it is both ineffective against trained professionals and immoral. A skilled interrogation can yield reliable information more quickly than torture. This has been illustrated recently by the FBI and CIA when they interrogated Abu Zubaydah. The CIA actually had to call the FBI back after their aggressive interrogation techniques failed but, unfortunately for Abu Zubaydah, the CIA got inpatient and decided torture would would work better. By all accounts it did not.

Anyway we cannot find out anything more about the situation by continuing to speculate. The recon team in preparation for the assault will move out soon after I have decided on the best route to take through the lower decks and other tactical considerations. Does anyone else, not currently part of the assault team wish to join the recon mission? The only requirement is that both your main firearm and sidearm are suppressed."

Bill @ Ulysses

If you are willing to wait, I can sneak down from the Infirmary and join you. If not needed, I can drop off my backpack and supply belt with my electronics, but unless said, they will be brought along.

Ulysses:

"Of course I'm willing to wait. More firepower and more eyes are always good things on a recon mission into hostile territory. I would recommend ditching all unnecessary equipment, I certainly will be, to aid stealth and ease of motion. I will leave each member of the recon team to check through their equipment and decide what is surplus. Are there anymore wishing to join the assault team? I wish to know exactly what I have available before making any plans."

@ mod: Ulysses ditches his two longer, accurized barrels (Recon and Sniper). He also ditches the flare, glowstick, first aid kit, 2 pistol clips and 1 rifle clip. He leaves all this in his bergan in a conner of the infirmary. This should, if my maths is decent, bring his weight down to 14 which is his maximum carrying limit with the assault vest/supply belt.

OOC: Aren't you in the infirmary?!

Bill

I'll drop my laptop, hacker kit and two clips of my SCAR, (Willhiem: HEY!) I certainly won't use that piece of junk. Dump the backpack and supply vest too, giving me one slot for any extras we wish to bring.

@ Ulysses

"If you have morals, you're in the wrong business. Neither of my weapons are silenced, so I won't be joining. Do you need me in the infirmary to torture anyone in case no-one else wants to? I have a knife, and I'm sure someone has some fire."

Ilya mimed shooting at the wall with his P90. He too the silencer off, wheighed the weapon in his hand, and put the silencer back on. "Chudo tecnichi! This weapon is a miracle! It weighs nothing. I am ready to fight. When do we move out?"

Ulysses:

"Gabriel we will not agree on such issues as we come at them from completely different positions. I still hold that a skillful interrogation, maybe with some neat psychological tricks thrown in, is infinitely more effective at getting reliable information, even out of fanatics or well-trained prisoners.

Also you can join the assault team, which is separate to the recon team. I am picking suitable candidates from the people I have available for the assault for the recon mission, though if anyone who meets the sole criterion wishes to come alone just for the recon mission they are welcome.

Finally Ilya I suppose if you want to come on the recon mission you can. I'm not exactly having to fight off the volunteers here. We move out as soon as I finish formulating my plan in a few minutes time, now I know whose coming.*"

OOC: *Actually the plan will be up tomorrow morning, if anyone else wants to join, because I really need to go to bed now.

Bill:

The backpack and the supply bag drop to the flow, ignored for now. While Wilhiem is trying to memorize the map, Bill has a few seconds to get ready for the recon submission.

He quickly stretched his arms up, gently pulling his arm muscles, then crouched down and reached behind him and fent the burning of his hamstrings. Wilhiem groumbled, but Bill ignored it. Jumping up, he was ready.

Personally, I'm with Gabriel. If we interrogate each prisoner separately, perhaps seperated with the different bunk rooms, and cross check their answers we can achieve our goals even with dodges. Torture, while it might be a good idea, might publicize this event further than we wish and might produce false answers.

@ mod
Alexandrov will pick up a first aid kit from the infirmary, will prolly need that.

Also, doesn't the bow side stairs also lead to 4th level?
