Ok, this is the first succession game that I've started. The games rules will be loosely based upon Azik Blaze's 'Most Effective World-Dominating Strategy'. While I doubt very much it's as effective as he makes out (hence the Regent difficulty) it might be a fun variant to try out :) For those of you who haven't read the strategy:

The theory

The rules:

PTW v.1.21
Difficulty - Regent
Civ - America (Edit: now England)
Map - Pangea
Size - Large
Civs - Max
Barbs - Sedentary
Warm world.

Variants -

- We must use the international power that is the dollar to divide our enemies.
- The only victory conditions enabled are conquest, domination and space race.
- Under NO circumstances can we declare war. If an AI should declare war on us we can only fight a defensive war, recapturing lost cities.
- The Collosus WILL be built in our capital! We will first establish a strangle-hold on the tourism industry, and then THE WORLD.
- Adam Smith's trading company is a priority, but if we cannot secure it then it's not the end of the world.
- After gaining pottery and iron working we must make an immediate bee-line for currency. Once we are in the middle-ages we must make a bee-line for banking. (The same applies for the tech that enables stock exchanges to be built. I've forgotten which). As soon as we receive each technology it is a priority to get marketplaces/banks/stock exchanges and commerical docks up and running in our cities.

For those of you who can't be bothered to read Azik's thread (though I suggest you do) the theory is a simple one. In the later stages of the game the human player loans the AI large amounts of gold for GPT in return. The AI then rushes lots of military units, but suddenly the amount of gold it receives plummets due to the new military costs. So to stay afloat the AI attacks another AI civ in order to use its army. However, at that point the human loans the second AI civ a large wad of gold in order to allow them to fight back. Eventually a war of attrition will ensue, with no side being able to gain a clear advantage. The AI switches to Communism slowing their tech rate and causing their cities populations to plummet (through rushing units). Cities are then destroyed (as they keep passing hands) and we (the human civ) go in with settlers and claim the land for ourselves. All hail the dollar!

Well that's the theory. Whether it will work I don't know. There's a chance the AI will attack us in order to get out of the GPT payments, or that one side will still overpower another. If that happens, then never mind. We'l be having fun :) Diplomatic and cultural win are disabled because (in the real world) America doesn't control the UN, and not everyone wants to be American.

The expansionist and commerical traits should help us out financially in both the early game and the late game. Unfortunately America has a sucky UU... but that can't be helped.

I'll say that experience at winning at Regent with regular rules is required. Hopefully some more experienced players will join in to help out, but either way I'm sure we'll be fine :)

The roster:

Doshin
BOG
ChrTh
Ville

------------

Please post if you're interested. The version is PTW 1.21. I'm from the UK though so we'll have to wait until the latest patch is released before I can play.

So, anyone willing to help establish a monetary strangle-hold on the world?

I might join.
I have no access to internet from my computer but i can buy some floppies to get saves to my computer.

Great :) I'll put you down on the roster.

I am not signing up.

Just wanted to point out that America is NOT commercial. They are expansionist and industrious. Industrious would also help make money by roading and railing quickly but it does not give you the extra commerce in your cities.

ChrTh: Glad to have you on board :) I've added you to the roster

Controlfreak: You're right, my bad. Still, I think America fits the theme well. As you say the roading will help with the commerce.

An alternative could be to play as England. I'm fine with either... the English were the dominant economic power prior to WWI, so it would be in keeping with the theme (especially as we'll be loaning in a big way around the industrial age, which was when England became the world power).

Ville, ChrTh (and anyone else who'd like to sign) do you have a preference?

im in. just be warned, i am often unavailable, but hopefully i can play more in the summer.

oh and btw, i would prefer america. indusrtrial is alyways great, and expansionist should help us get an early lead with all the popping huts.

I'm NOT applying for a position in this team, but I will be following this game with great interest. Good luck to you all, hey it would be nice if Azik himself could join this game, you could always PM him.

bewareofgnomes: added you to the roster. Don't worry if you're not available... just as long as you let the rest of us know

Thanks to everyone- the roster is now FULL. I'll PM Azik to asks if he'd like to join in though... just so he can't say we played the game wrongly ;)

Ville: you can have the deciding vote on which civ we play as. I'm honestly not bothered either way. The Gold Standard will rule whichever civ we are!

I'll get a save loaded up sometime tomorrow, provided that the UK 1.21 patch has been released by then. Is everyone ok with this order of turns:

Doshin
ChrTh
BOG
Ville (give you some time to get floppy disks)

If anybody wants to play first or switch let me know.

If you could drop me lower, I'd appreciate it...I'm UP or almost up in 3 games...

why dont we be carthrage? they are industrius and commercial. look here at T-hawk's stellar performance in epic 25. he had every square roaded and was commercial, so he got the commerce bonus. excellent game. and, it would fit historically as well, as cartrage was the dominating econmic power in the meditteranian for hundreds of years.

Ok, I'll switch you and BOG. If Ville gets some floppies before your turn he can always play before too:

Doshin
BOG
ChrTh
Ville

Carthage has the right UU for defensive only wars also.

Good luck from the lurking crew.

Great, Carthage sound good. We get the best of both worlds with them. Only problem is... what currency did they use? ;)

Edit: T-Hawk's performance was awesome, and the game itself looks kinda similar to what we'll be doing (emphasis on money etc, although war was allowed). At least we have a rough model of how our game should end up...

So what we have: Carthage, England, America.

Carthage: Best UU of those, not expansionistic
England: Commercial, Bad UU
America: Industrious, Bad UU

When I'm looking the Game's name it's America but also, America is not commercial (unless we do some modding)

England has the traits that were recommended by Doshin and bits in the game's name (somehow)

Carthage would be off because it's ancient and is not expansionistic which is important with those variants.

So it's England and America...
England because America is not commercial so
ENGLAND

-God save the bank

England is more fun for us lurkers too, as there are few SGs using them and many SG players that despise them.

God save the queen.

and my vote is...

CARTHRAGE

so its england 1, carthrage 1, america 0
