DuneWars: Battle for Arrakis

<shrug>
I don't care that much, do what you like.

But in general, I would prefer to discuss things with the group and build consensus, rather than just having you decide on your own what is best.

I've waited alot of time but didnt saw any discussion about next techs, so at least when i going to finish i'll make choice of tech path. Please check in -game - Spaceports will allow us to send kinjals from Arrakeen in 1 turn. And to every point of dune. That is primary thing considering our spread. Transportation in carryalls takes several turns and risks. That is important that new 3 promotion kinjals will be delivered to front instantly.

Please , if you disagree, explain in detail why industrialism 1st is more important, than instant airlift of reinforcements, considering we have front line spread all over planet?

Update - we lost weak city of south cave of ridges turn 348
turn 450 our reinforcement delivered to Carthag. Soon we will start 2 front operation,
Military units production on its maximum, ocassionaly water processors built, and New New Bandalong build wonder, after Spaceports i advise beeline to Sonic Tanks.

You waited 1 hour.

Please , if you disagree, explain in detail why industrialism 1st is more important, than instant airlift of reinforcements, considering we have front line spread all over planet?

Because instant airlift isn't that valuable when we don't really have any troops to airlift, and can only build them every ~7-8 turns. I would go for factories first to reduce the buildtime, and start building up a decent army *then* get spaceports to transport them. You can't transport units you haven't built yet.

Our plan was to try to get peace with Ordos, and fortify/build a new army of tier 3 units not to stay at war taking damage.

But like I said, I don't care that much.

Well Ordos is about to die, actually

I wont make detailed report of last turns because my PC crashed due lag in game

So we killed Harkonnen,
Got Important city from Ordos (Nalour Rock back)
Ordos main stack crushed (Kinjals with anti melee and MLs)
Most cities have Spaceports so airlift to any direction,
There is small buisness left - to finish Ordos.
2 Good stacks from north and Near Carthag.
You can airlift units, current tech is Military Complex.
Imperial Spaceport under contrustion in Kuriya.

Ahriman, you again being stubborn :) - i had units on main land. I neded transportation. I had major fights on land with Ordos and Assault on Harks. That was important. So i built Spaceports before industrialism because i needed to move some units to front lines ASAP. Is that clear?
And no i waited 1.5 days. Actually.

ah - forgot - i abused our air units and we have some casualities. We need to rebuild our Hornet force.

Um, I agree with Slvynn...you need at least some airports functional first before you get factories. The Art of Kanly is done in New Bandalong and that will trump any factory in terms of troop production. (Plus we're Mahdi, right? Temple of the Messiah is almost like a factory for troops).

361. Very nice Slvynn...I don't know how you did it, but you did a great job turning the tide of the war down south. I decide to make peace with the Emperor while we concentrate our forces in finishing Ordos:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0088-1.jpg

Also, now that Ecaz is our vassal, I trade for 3 techs with 2 (and there are plenty of wonders to be built now with these techs):
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0087-1.jpg

362. Sabtah is captured.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0089-1.jpg

I'll play more when I come back tonight (have to go work for 2-3 hours now).

363. Uneventful.
364. Heblon Gap is captured. Ordos is not willing to capitulate (since they still have 3 productive cities SW of Carthag) but is willing to give 1 city and Mind Training.
365. Cave of Ridges is recaptured with no disorder. He's now willing to give Gara Kulon (the city next to Ix) but I think we should just capture it ourselves.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0090-1.jpg

366. Uneventful
367. The Imperial Space Port is done. GS born in Yassanah. I decide to save him for a GA when some cities come out of rebellion.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0091.jpg

368. Military Complex is done. I use our saved GE in Carthag to build the Spice Foundry (50%+ hammers with spice)--I really don't understand why we didn't build Art of Kanly there--we need more troop production locally for invading Corrino. Aerial Combat next (first to it gets a free GS). Gara Kulon is captured.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0092.jpg

369. Heblon Gap is out of rebellion. I inch our troops towards Akrab. (I'm not taking any chances and reinforced our new Ordos conquests near the Ix--he should really be our next target so we can concentrate our forces towards the SW without fear of being stabbed in the back). It would be really nice for the BG to vassalize spontaneously...so I trade some more with them.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0093.jpg

370. Carthag finishes a pilot school--since we're going for Aerial combat next, might as well build one closer to the frontlines.
371. Akrab is actually a little hard to get to without carriers, so I try to build some more. There's also a lot of unhappiness in our cities. So I decide to make peace with them but we get Akrab (since from there we can get to Bidriyah and the rest of the Ordos cities easily)--it does need to be reinforced every turn by space ports though).
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0094.jpg

372-373. Uneventful.
374. Aerial Combat is in, we get free GS. Also a GP is born in New Bandalong, so I initiate our GA to help speed up building factories in our cities. I use our other GS to bulb genetic manipulation (Perm alliances--it would be really nice if the Fremen see the light)
375. Well, no luck--they said we haven't had a war long enough nor had a DP--but they won't declare on our enemies so it's a catch-22. I choose Heat Shields next (it would be nice to improve our land quicker). I trade for Lasgun Weaponry from Ecaz with Genetic Manipulation and Air Power.
376-8. Uneventful
379. Heat Shields in. LEV next (scorpions are nice).

Note that I have directed Ecaz to research Sand Farms and Tleilax to research culture of Dune. We can easily trade for these from them.
I would go for either Ordos or Ix next. There is a big stack in Akrab and several small stacks around Ix territory. I think 10 more moves of building troops and planes after our factories and industrial complexes are finished should be enough.

BTW, we have exceeded the % for religion without ever building a single inquisitor. I'm sending a settler SE towards some uninhabited land to boost our land area. (which is not even 40% yet).

Its no matter where Art of Kanly built - because we can airlift - and New Bandalong have Bursegs settled - so there will be units with more xp!

:goodjob: Nice progress. I don't worry too much about what to research next. We will win in a relatively short timescale anyway. Let's just have fun :king:

Nice job guys!

Agreed. Where are we at in terms of the victory conditions?

I'll take my turn this time around. Should be able to play it sometime in the next 5 hours or so.

I'll start new thread for new game speculation, which perhaps will be aimed for next patch. We can discuss setting there. :)
My turn to start game :P
This was interesting , and even being monarch it still was challenging at some parts (espessially Ordos attack) :D

Edit: New game is up here:

Please also vote in poll :)

For all those lurkers in the thread who've been watching; please post and let us know your thoughts. Did this make you want to try out the mod? What would you like to see in a new game? How could another succession game be made more interesting to read?

Did this make you want to try out the mod?

Yes. I didn't read Dune, but I did read all the character backgrounds in Wiki, to know where it's supposed to happen and who's supposed to be who. ;)

I currently don't have my computer (which is able to play civ) with me. So I'll have to lurk.

This thread totally got me into the Dune Wars mod (first mod I've tried too!). I'd first read dune at age 9 loved it, tried some Dune games, but the emphasis on tanks in the Westwood version totally turned me off the games. This mod is so amazing because of how much flavour it kept!

Anyway, enough effusing of praise, congrats to all who worked so hard on it!

Hi guys,

I enjoyed lurking, been here from close to the start. I've played the FFH mod a bit, so I know how different mods can be from plain old Civ. Your SG definitely made it look interesting, although the general level of discussion was way over my head. I think that a) I will download the mod to play around with and b) put The Dune novels on my Christmas list- it's been 20 years since I read the original.

Thanks!

(This will be a bit of a summarised write up to my turn as I've run out of time this evening. I ended up playing 25 turns since the first ten turns were military build up and I wanted to take a decent bite into the Ordos.)

First ten turns or so I mostly built up our forces.

Built War Codex in Kuriya using Great Engineer.

Founded Nalour Gap on outlying rock islands to the south east

Shaddam made permanent alliance with the Ordos a turn before I was about to declare war on them. Attacked them anyway.

Captured Atar and Acquisition Sigma from the Ordos, they have one city left.

Civ4ScreenShot0105.jpg

Researched Low Energy Vehicles, Mentat Logic and Research Labs, started on Aerial Tactics

I have some thopters close by Corrino to harass and pillage while we finish of the Ordos. Since the Ixian front seems quiet I am moving the second Atreides Heir and some other troops down towards Akrab for the final assault on Shaddam.

Civ4ScreenShot0107.jpg

We still need another 13% more land area to win the Holy War victory.

Perhaps we should use Atomics on Shaddam for a final bit of roleplay...

This mod is so amazing because of how much flavour it kept!

Thanks for the comments. Feedback like this keeps us motivated to go on improving the mod. :)

Great Job!
negy next - hope we will finish it soon :)
