Downloaded the new version of the map, started up another game as America and declared war on Britain.
Took me more than twenty-five turns to completely finish them (ignoring Darwin and Perth); Britain's navy put up a decent fight when I invaded their island, and the fight for Canada was quite exciting - even with the large army at my disposal, I had to plan carefully to avoid nasty counterattacks. Well done!
However, two problems persist: my cities still lack vital infrastructure (markets etc.) that should be ubiquitous in the Modern Age, so I cannot research anything in less than 150 turns with most civilizations. Thus, the one right strategy is to turn off research altogether and rush-buy all the necessary buildings with Universal Suffrage.
I haven't noticed much of a difference in city size, either. Lagos (10.4 million inhabitants) at size 1 or Mumbai (12.5 million inhabitants) at size 3 is totally out of scope. However, that's not your fault: the map itself is borked in those areas; there's actually a desert to the south of Mumbai where there should be tropical rainforests. Even if you made the cities larger, they would simply starve. Changing the terrain or adding seafood resources in certain locations could help.
One last nitpick: some countries are direly deprived of vital resources. In some cases, this presents a fun challenge - for example, Germany doesn't have any happiness resources whatsoever, which makes trade, construction and the culture slider much more important. However, it takes a turn for the ridiculous when Germany cannot build tanks or planes due to lack of oil/uranium, which the AI is extremely reluctant to trade. Now normally, I'd try to wrestle with France for the only uranium resource in Western Europe, and that would be my primary mid-term objective for the game; but I cannot attack France because they always vassalize to Russia on the second turn, and Catherine would simply nuke my butt before I could get as far as Kiev.
To add insult to injury, Germany cannot construct any advanced ships either, so they'd have to fall back on ironclads and galleons... except that they don't have any iron, which means that Germany's best naval unit is the Privateer.
Solution: add an oil resource to Romania.
Keep up the good work!

EDIT:
Spoiler :
Just noticed that there's a second uranium resource within Germany's reach near Stockholm; however, Scandinavia is clearly "work in progress" (empty cities everywhere), so I didn't touch it. Besides, you need to make amphibious landings, and I can't build transports (no oil), I can't build galleons (no iron), so I'm stuck with galleys for the invasion. Frankly, this is hilarious, and you should keep it that way; playing your scenario as Germany is refreshingly fun, because you have to improvise all the time. Marines in galleys!
