A rather interesting lesson. I would normally want to get the AP religion and spread it for the hammer benefits. I certainly would not have considered switching civics to prevent the spread of the AP religion. In this game I wasn't worried about the AP because Ragnar had a distinctly minority religion. I'd forgotten (if I ever knew) about only needing a single city in each civ to trigger a possible win.
It does mean that there is a more interesting strategic dilemma than I realised - what do I do when the AP is founded in a religion that I don't have? Presumably you need to watch the religion screen to see how widely the AP religion is spread and take action if it appears to be a small religion limited to 1 civ - in this case the Vikings.
Would it have been enough to close borders with Ragnar? That seems a less drastic (and quicker) move than researching theology and switching to Theocracy. It wouldn't stop one of the other civs spreading Hinduism of course and I'm not sure about random spread.

I think the civic stop the spread of religions completely. i think new religions only spread to cities that have no religion unless an event triggers this? Doubtful!!
Should of tech theology much earlier.
What is interesting is no one considered the AP when they voted for this round. Well no one mentioned it to my knowledge.
Hmm, well if people need more time we can delay for a few days so that we can get more submissions. To tell you the honest truth, I've been pretty busy this week too (its tragic when RL stuff gets in the way of Civ!), and am only halfway through my round and am not really up to finishing right now.
Why don't we go ahead and wait for another 2/3 days before we vote.
Also, Gumbolt--in the meantime if you want to replay your round just for fun and to show what strategy you would have used otherwise, then I'm cool with that--it just won't be eligible for votes.
Thanks. It would be nice to get an Ap win on civ BTS. Its not as easy as it might seem. Although the Ai seem to do it well. I am having a bash as this with Justin at mo but my growth was somewhat staunted by the spreading of religion. Plan has gone somewhat wrong as America have 2x my votes.
I played this round in many short playing sessions--so this report might be a little less organized than usual (I need to start taking better notes!). My main goal was to upgrade a lot of our troops since AI was starting to get Astronomy and would be likely to attack a weak civ (always seems to be my weak point at this point of the game). I also hoped to be able to focus as much as possible on upping the tech rate.
Tech: I started out the round by switching over to Economics and Constitution then changed my civics to free market and Representation (I decided against switching to free religion since I still had a lot of buildings that needed to be built in my cities). I then went for military science because I wanted to upgrade some of my troops and grenadiers are much better than musketmen. After that I bee-lined for Railroad (replaceable parts, steel, steam power, railroad). I wasn't really sure where to go next--I could do rifling, but didn't really need it yet--so I broke down and did scientific method then physics (for free scientist). Then I used scientist to halfway bulb biology which I then finished. I finally decided it was time for rifling since it seemed none of my opponents were using grenadiers yet (4 turns left). At some point I also traded with Charlemagne for Astronomy.
Tech Situation:
Spoiler:
Cities:
Even though I upped the tech rate to 90% (to use up that large sum of cash), I decided to go ahead and finish up banks and work on other economy buildings. After I got astronomy, I built observatories in my big tech cities (also built academies with GS in several cities). I built some settlers ASAP to get to those islands to the south (which we could now see--even without a city on the iron). First city, of course, was the city on the iron, next I settled to the south to get two clam and horse, finally I settled on the south-west island to get 4 fish (beat out Suleman by one turn for this one!). For most of the second half of the round, I focused on building up my military and navy. Also of note--Gilgamesh built several cities at the northern end of our island early in the round. I thought about trying to block some of them, but I doubt it would be worth it since there really weren't any resources of note (except for one iron).
Relations:
Things were going pretty well until the end of the round. I did switch over my trade of iron so that I could get a ton of happy resources from Montezuma. Unfortunately, around 1350ishAD Cyrus declared war on me. He proceeded to attack Pre-Rup (clam horse city)with a ton of pre-gunpowder units. Thankfully I had been building up a force in Pre-Rup to take out a barb city that was on the southern end of the island, so I managed to hold out until I could bring in more units (unfortunately this means the barb city is still there). After a few turns of that, Monte declared war on me and landed a huge stack by Angkor Thom. At this point, I was just finishing up my rail system, so I was able to send some troops in to defend the city. After I finished off both stacks, right at 1500, I was able to get peace from both of them--and they actually paid me money for it! I got one GG and settled him as an military academy in capital. Second GG turned up right before the end of the round, and I decided to leave him since I wasn't sure what the best option for him was. Hes waiting in the capital now. One other important thing--later in the round, Pre-Rup became Hindu. I was a little worried when the AP election came up--but thankfully Ragnar didn't have enough votes for victory.
Relations Summary:
Spoiler:
I think that pretty much sums things up. I think the round went fairly well, though I wish my tech rate was higher. I hate having wonders obsolete! I will mention that around 1300AD my comp crashed and I had to load from an auto-save, but it was only a few turns in which nothing important happened, so I don't think it really matters.

The issue I have with this save is I fear we may lose through AP vote. Just looked at the members votes on Ap screen. Ragnar has like 174/175 to Morgan 5. One unfortunate war or diplo error and you could be gone.
This save screams for mass media to kill off the AP. Not sure if spreading the AP religion would help?
How close was the AP vote? He cant of been far off a win.
As a side thought also on RJM save.
Spoiler:
This save is somewhat safe from Ap vote for now as the religion as not yet reached RJM save. Again the members page shows ragnar with 170 votes. RJM is somewhat closer to mass media though.
All in all the vote for next round may not just be about winning but also not losing.
I'm worried about the AP win too. I can't remember the exact vote, but it was definitely close. I also think I got distracted from my build of a Hindu Monastery in Pre-Rup due to the war with Cyrus, so getting missionaries could be a big pain. Does anyone know if spreading AP religion does help reduce the chance of an AI AP victory?
Either way, I think RJM's save is superior to mine anyways... especially given that he hasn't been 'infected' by the AP religion yet.
Hopefully we can get a few more saves submitted and start voting in the next day or two.
I start off by looking at the relations screen, they are mostly pleased despite differing religion, I.E. Judaism.
I plan on a peaceful building game, with getting 5 of them to pleased, and Monty is pariah. Then its just spaceward bound.
Spoiler:
I next run through the cities, renaming a few to Capital city, and Moai statues. I review the builds, no need for Army as yet, so complete the civilian builds, add a few more wonders, Uni of Sankor in Capital city (pure Scientist apart from national epic) Notre Dame in Hariharalaya as its a dogs breakfast of great people and add Moai statues after, (12 water tiles production and food) Angkor Wat I add at Rajavihara as it has no great people apart from a great spy.
On trade deals, I cancel all deals where more gold is available, and up the exchange rate, gaining crabs in the deal from Cyrus.
Now come on guy's and Gal's, we have 2 UNUSED Iron resources, I could have gotten sugar as well from Monty.
As such, a settler or 2 needs to be queued up. I couldn't trade for stone, as Charlie and Ragnar are the only 2 with a source. I notice Horses and Iron on the vacant island next to Ragnar, I have to assume he's got some cities there by now, so go have a look see.
Apart from that, not enough farms, person preference of mine, food and hammers/science.
Now I've been fore warned about the apostolic palace, its Hindu, and Ragnar has a majority, a vote couldn't come up as he has MORE then 75 %, or is that only U.N.
OH Crap, I've just gone through the relations screen and were Cyruses WORST ENEMY, and I've just traded him Iron.
Ideally I'd like to switch civic to Vassalage, to gain favorite civic bonuses with Cyrus and Charlie, as we have Ragnar, Gilgamesh and Suleiman with Hereditary rule, Monty is our Pariah.
As the next great person is due in 3 turns from capital city, I hold off, as were fairly safe pre astronomy, I change research to Economics (Great merchant) then Astronomy (upgrade some galley's).
We are building civilian, military tech's aren't needed, as Ragnar and Gilgamesh can go 10% at pleased, the rest only at Cautious, Monty not included, Pariah.
Spoiler:
Further to all this I queue, in order Barracks, longbow and settler in 2 cities, to go to the Island mass post astronomy, and a settler in a 3rd city, to claim the excess Iron source.
Tech changed to Economics/Astronomy. Then its build Observatories.
I upgrade the Trireme to a caravel, and explore the land mass to the south of us...Come on People. O.K. I didn't notice till I was 2 turns into round.
1130 AD, Suleiman and Gilgamesh complete respectively Angkor Wat and Notre Dame, Suleiman with a Great Engineer he popped the turn before. We popped a great Scientist, who was merged into capital city.
You you all may rant and Rail at this, but I rename Angkor Wat to Wall Street as it has Confucianism founded there, and merge the Great Merchant from Economics into the city. Workshops will be converted into cottages/farms. I'm going out of Bureaucracy, into Vassalage, for shared civics bonus once Uni of Sankor is built.
1200 AD I found Yasadharipura, mainly to grab the iron, as Gilgamesh has settled a city on OUR land mass. 80% with small loss, Astronomy due in 1 turn, then off to settle up to 3 cities over seas/land mass.
1250 AD Gilgamesh beats us to the Uni of Sankor by 5 turns, time to change civics NEXT turn to Free Trade/Vassalage. (2 settlers due in 1 turn) I'm also researching constitution with the aim of trading Liberalism for it to Gilgamesh and building the Statue of Liberty, as we've popped some copper. (don't know if we had one or not before?)
I do another round of trade deals, Gilgamesh the Cheap B-tard, wouldn't give up 19 gold at Friendly, Charlie gave 11 gold for the copper, and Democracy is due in 10 ,
Spoiler:
Monty, was as accommodating as ever, giving this deal for Iron
Spoiler:
P.S. Charlie is his worst Enemy (Like that matters)
I now switch civics to Vassalage/Free Market, for Civics bonus and extra trade, 2 settlers are built, along with 2 longbow escorts and 2 workers taken, they go off in 2 Galleons, to settle the land by Ragnar, who hasn't settled it, though its in Galley range for him
1260 AD Monty came by demanding 1350 gold, as he doesn't have open borders, and is annoyed with nearly all, I refuse Monty. I delay civics's switch by 2 turns to produce 2nd Galleon, and start observatories in 3 cities. I send the 1st Galleon with a settler/longbow/worker to Horse block, as we don't have Ponies. 2nd will go to Copper Crab at top, with 3rd in Centre, or squeezed by culture if we miss it.
1265 AD Charlie comes by offering Theology for Music, I give up Philosophy instead. Gils got nothing to trade liberalism for, so still have it as option. Corporations out there 2.
Spoiler:
I further revolt to free Trade and Vassalage, sending the 2nd Galleon off.
After civics's switch, they are all Pleased, bar Monty , Ragnar can go 10% at pleased, same as Gilgamesh, who know has 2 cities on our land mass, but Friendly.
3rd Island with resources now found, 2nd island has 4 cities, suck up maintenance with cottages.?? I also renegotiate the trade deals, upping 2 by 1 gold, charlies stay's till Democracy is in. Loss at 80 % with 2K in bank.
100% lowers Democracy by 1 turn only for loss of 113 gold, lower to 80% and loss of 31 with 5 turns remaining. Stagger Settler/Worker/Longbowmen combo's so one complete group should be produced from 3 cities at once. Oh yes, Charlie and Gilgamesh, both just ended golden ages as well, so hopefully we'll pull way out in research now. Gil's come by offering Corporations for Astronomy,
Spoiler:
I DON'T THINK SO MR SPAM CITIES ON MY CONTINENT.
We are now OFFICIALLY on the clock to settle these island land masses. Go settlers GO.
Another thing, a number of them are in WHEEOHRN mode, Pre civic change, I didn't check.
1295 AD Rag's went at 10%, raised the Horse blocking city, but we took out 2 pikes.
Spoiler:
Rag's obviously took offense at our settling his back yard, I'm now furiously moving worker to Crab/copper, and shipping muskets/longbows as well in the Galleon, Building Muskets at top of builds .
Spoiler:
I lost a worker to a beserker off a galley, I didn't think it had 3 movement points to reach the workers, damm. 2 Longbows in city now. Moving 2 Crossbows (upgraded) and a Musket next. Saved the running worker, by boarding a Galleon I sent to save him.
Of course, they gain Navigation 1 with a harbor (trading post) he he..1 worker less, slacker.
Remember to start Statue of Liberty in Capital, and cancel copper deal with Charlie, 35 turns to build.
I attack Rag's stack of doom BEFORE it can reach the city with woods cover, and kill 2 Beserkers, who had city raider, and 1 cataput from woods cover. I remain defended by 2 longbows, against a damaged Beserker from previous city raid, a damaged pike, and 4 cats.
Spoiler:
I killed Rag's stack of doom for the loss of 1 longbow city garrison 2 at 78.6%, I'm now sitting in the ocean off his launching city, with 2 frigates. IF he comes out again, I'll sink him, resettled the horse block, with 2 Muskets this time, but he has access to Grenadiers, so won't be good holding, best to keep watch on “Mr attack at 10% though to be fair, probably decided when cautious, too slow switching civic's.
1365 AD We, get declared upon by a
FRIENDLY CYRUS
To be fair, again decided BEFORE civics's switch. Up grade all troops, in Wall street, send in additional troops, 1 turn short, science goes to zero, for cash upgrades, as I've spent most of it already. Cyrus stops to Pillage a fishing boat giving me extra time.
Spoiler:
Oh 1 Great General has been settled in Moai statues.
Ragnar buy's his way out of war for the following
Spoiler:
On the way over to visit Cyrus, my 2 frigates pick up some experience V's some barb galley's, both now combat 2. Cyrus landed a stack of 4 catapults, a knight, a horse archer (suicided against Wall street), and a Immortal Probably going back for more 'up to date' troops
I attack with 3 pikes, Cyrus's Pike first at 65% and lose, 2nd time against Knight I win, but down to 0.9 health, 3rd pike attacks catapult, wins but reduced to 1.9 health. More troops coming to wall street, and I find I sent the Guerrilla 3 longbow there, HUGE ERROR, send back and send in correct longbowman. 9 to go on Rifles, 42 gold loss, 742 in bank.
Cyrus's stack is killed off for the loss of 1 archer, who was just Catapult fodder. 2nd Great General settled in Moai statues. 1 Galleon of Cyrus, sunk retreating, but frigate, is at risk of losing to multiple Caravels, 92% v's top defender still.
On the Very turn I have Hinduism spread to me, I get the religious Victory option, of course I abstain. Frigate kills 1 galleon, total of 2 and loses to next galleon.
1395 AD this happens;
Spoiler:
Maybe I should have adopted Theocracy, while at war, but I had building to build still, and I didn't thing it a realistic outcome. But come on, I was aware of it, ON THE VERY TURN ITS SPREAD, THE VOTE COME UP.
I was ready to spam it all over empire, to gain a blocking stake, or even a voting option by adopting it.
Back stabbed by Gilgamesh, who didn't hold enough of a grudge for 'you declared war on our friend the HUMAN Cheap, total and Utter B-tard

Loved the naration for that round. You got further than me.
As for the AP vote. He already had 168 votes and needed only 3 additional votes to win. Gilga gave him that with 12 votes!! One Ai voted for Ragnar the game was over. Could you of set up a colony??
I do think RJM was perhaps lucky Ragnar didnt spread his religion to our lands.
What I dont get about the Ap vote is Ragnar is the only option to vote. Is this because the others have not spread his religion enough?
I played on chroms save purely on a clicking basis. Pressed that green button till 1595 when I lost due to AP. Not good. There was a vote just after 1500ad that ragnar missed out on a win by 2 points.
On a flipside it would be interesting to post a cookbook that lost a game. Learning lesson and all.
Although we shouldnt be losing if we pick the best saves each time.
