REVOLUTION AND REBELLION

REVOLUTIONS IN WESTERN EUROPE. The revolution that put Luther Griggs and democratic government in charge of Pulias was mirrored on the mainland by the ascension of the communist government in the former Imperio du Soliel. These revolutions have caused widespread ideological and militancy shifts from the Valkyrian Republic to Hong Kong.
Now, both governments have a choice: Keep the Revolution Alive or Purge?
Keeping the Revolution Alive will increase national military capacity by 20% and cause continued ideological unrest in neighboring empires. Purging will reduce your national militancy, as well as the militancy of affected ideologies in your neighbors.
REVOLTS IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC. In Algeria, the commander of the local infantry division, supported by a ragtag group of partisans, has issued an ultimatum to the government: Restore the monarchy and arrest the traitors. Major-General Gonçal Xavier Capello is calling upon other units loyal to the monarchy to prepare for a counterrevolution. Already, the “Imperio du Soliel” has seized Algeria and her mines. Will the major-general be able to finance his war by selling the province’s raw materials for munitions? Without transports to ferry his forces to the mainland, how can this war possible end?
In Asturias, a fascist parliamentary group marched on the capital of the province. Supported by local conservatives business of the old government, the march nonetheless failed to achieve their goals thanks in part to the lack of support for either group in the province.
In Picardy, local businesses have poured a great amount of money into equipping separatist militias. This alliance of separatists and solutionists declared a temporary Picardy Council before being defeated by the local infantry division tasked with restoring order to the province.
GUERILLAS DRILLING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE. Portugal, Asturias, and Picardy face substantial risk of revolt within the next four years.
MAJOR NEWS
MINING BOOM IN YUDIA. Yangon, Pagan Empire. There is a large diorama in the lobby of the Elephant Mining Corporation’s corporate headquarters in downtown Yangon. The building’s beautiful tour guide told my small group of six that the diorama just received an expansion showing the EMC’s latest mining operations in Yudia. Raw materials, that all-encompassing term which can include every common material from cotton to iron, are in high demand.
I flashed the tour guide my journalist badge. Within a half hour, I was sitting across a table in the offices’ café with a man from the public relations department. He answered my questions bluntly and honestly.
“Do you worry about the flood of Chinese raw materials into the Pagan market?”
“Not really, no. Globally, there is a shortage for raw materials. The markets with the biggest demand for raw materials just happen to be nearby: Tagalog and Unity come to mind...” [+2 RM Mines in Yudia. +10 Civilian Research]
MANITOBA WAR GAMES. Thompson, United Victoran Directorates. How does an empire with nearly zero ability to build maritime craft maintain an overseas empire? Some would say that the secret lies in Manitoba, far in the north of that cold former Canadian province. Here, the 14th Infantry Division hosts annual war games. Instead of simulating a defense against a vague invasion from the south, the simulation focuses on “pacification”, colonial policing some would say.
While the politics of the war games is uncomfortable to some, what has been learned in Manitoba has benefited colonial garrisons across the Directorates. [+1 Mil Research, Political Effects]
REPORTS FROM ASIA
WAVE OF VOLUNTEERS IN AFGHANISTAN. Kabul, People’s State of India. Afghanistan is a mountainous region wedged between the PSI to her south, the United Eastern Coalition to her north in Turkestan, and the Republic of China to her east. Centuries ago, Afghanistan was a battlefield for influence between the British Empire and British Empire. The British Empire is gone, but the United Eastern Coalition has taken the role of Russia in Central Asia, controlling Turkestan, Kazakhstan, and bringing Chinese Balkhash into his sphere of influence.
Encroaching Russian influence has led to a wave of young men to volunteer for military service in the region’s major cities. Critics would argue it is because work in the seskine mines of Afghanistan is back-breaking, hard, and dangerous to body and health. Either way, the military has manpower. JAPANESE PACIFIC. Caroline Islands, State of the Japanese Cooperative. This chain of islands was lightly contested by Japan and Oceania during the Conference of Bombay, having only been won by the delegation of the former thanks in part to superior negotiations with other powers. Today, the island chain forms the southernmost bulwark against some Japanese fear is an Oceanic threat. An infantry division tasked with protecting the islands has taken it upon itself to lay the ground work for expansion of defensive facilities. [1 IP off the next purchase of a military building].
REPORTS FROM THE AMERICAS
MINING BOOMS IN CENTRAL AMERICA, ORINOCO, SONORA. Central America, United Appalachia. A global shortage of raw materials has pushed the Central American regional government to increase investment in mining operations. Central America, they claim, has favorable conditions to raw materials mining. In direct competition to these efforts is the efforts made by a hopeful UVD conglomerate in South America to also expand mining operations.
Of course, the Californians in Sonora also think they’re the best. [+1 RM Mine for each, +5 Civil Research for each, Political Effects for UVD]
FACTORY CLOSES IN NEW ENGLAND FOLLOWING PROLONGED STRIKE. New England, Blue Oyster Cult. After months of strikes by the local union and stalled negotiations, the corporation that owns the plant closed the doors and fired all the workers in a move that has angered the local community. [+1 Abandoned Factory, -1 Factory, Political Effects]
RUPERT’S LAND OR OYSTER LAND? Rupert’s Land, Blue Oyster Cult. Local groups pressing for greater autonomy for Rupert’s Land have been growing weaker in rhetoric by the decade. The largest of these groups ended its call for violent separation a decade ago in favor a peaceful resolution. Now, they seem to be ever more mollified and content to remain part of the country. REPORTS FROM AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST
GROWING MINER MILITANCY IN GABON. Gabon, Empire of Tyo. Local union workers working for a Tyonese mining company have been targeted in a campaign of systematic intimidation and blacklisting by local private detective companies and businesses. Now, local unions are threatening to stage a massive strike against mines in Gabon province. Local businesses are asking government to intervene in their favor. [Political Effects, Decisions Needed]
DIVISION IN THE RANKS. Ovamboland, Empire of Tyo. The colonial garrison here in Ovamboland consists of Tyonese soldiers from the interior. Most cannot speak the local languages, and few units of the division have a translator on standby, or even on base. Managing this province has been a nightmare in light of these developments, made all the worse given the attempt to recruit locals into the garrison. [-5% Military Cap, Political Effects]
LIBERALISM IN PALESTINE. Palestine, Greece. Palestinians see the democracy practiced in Greece, and the prosperity and empire that has been fostered by it, and asked themselves “why not them as well?” The democracy movement in Palestine has inspired some people across the empire, as well as across the border. [Political Effects in Sinai, Palestine, and Greece]
REPORTS FROM EUROPE
POLITICAL SCANDAL IN WALLACHIA. Wallachia, Kingdom of Wallachia. A CEO of a daprese mining operation has been indicted for allegedly paying bribes to government officials to look the other way when it comes to that company’s illegal labor practices. While the officials implicated are not high-ranking, nor is the company one of the top five mining operations in the empire, many believe this case will set a precedent for future cases.
[Political Effects. Decision: How shall the government respond to this trial?]
”WE SHOULD CRUSH THEM.” Sardinia, Republic of Rome. A military commander has made headlines for his public demand that the Republic of Rome invade Catalyunya and install a new, proper government that respects the laws of “God and men.” Normally, such brash proclamations from a general criticizing the government would result in the loss of rank, but this commander is exceptionally popular among his men in Sardinia and with soldiers beyond the island. [Political Effects. Decision: How to respond to this commander?]
A POLISH NATION. Mazovia, Valkyrian Republic. Poland, as a country, has been divided between continental powers so many times that the Polish people have become the butt of many crude jokes in Moscow and Berlin. Despite this, some Polish intellectuals are searching for an ideology through which to reassert themselves on an international stage or, at the very least, in the country’s democracy. [Political Effects]
A SWEDISH NATION TOO, PERHAPS. Sweden, Valkyrian Republic. The Pulias Revolution has inspired people in Sweden to also aim for political change. While the Valkyrian Republic is already a fairly democratic empire, Swedes decry the loss of sovereignty under Valkyrian rule. While some wish for reunification with Norway, possibly under Pulias rule, most are content with the idea of independence. [Political Effects]
MINOR NEWS
MINOR MILITARY EXERCISE IN NOVA SCOTIA. Nova Scotia, Blue Oyster Cult. Military officers in Nova Scotia staged a mock defense against an amphibious landing that has led to a small boom in military research. [+1 Military Research]
DISCONTENT IN KIVU. Kivu, Empire of Tyo. There is some growing separatist unrest in Kivu, and those who subscribe to divisive ideologies are growing in number. However, the progress so far has been fairly minor and ineffectual on the national level. [Minor Political Effects]
DISCONTENT IN COMOROS. Comoros, Empire of Tyo. Comoros is a minor island of a regional power that until recently was an Indian territory. A fairly minor island, it still has minor political aspirations, such as a desire for freedom. [Minor Political Effects]
ZANZIBAR RAW MATERIALS MINE GOES BUST. Zanzibar, Humanist Republic of Unity. In bizarre news, a vague resource everybody considers infinite somehow ran out in Zanzibar. [-1 RM Mine, +1 Abandoned Mine]
MINOR CORRUPTION IN BIHAR. Bihar, People’s State of India. A low level of corruption has emerged in Bihar surrounding the province’s lucrative mining operations. While very, very minor, it will hamper the province’s ability to develop in the future. [-2% Building Modifier]
STATS AND MAP AND NOTES.
Note: Spheres can only be taken militarily. Heh.
You might notice there are a lot of "Political Effects" without being told the specific effect. The problem at the moment is that it turns the post into a wall of modifiers. For example,
+2% Global SEP
+1 Global MIL
-4% Local SEP
And so on, just for one province! Until I can find a better system, Political Effects and context clues will have to be enough.
