Enders Game 1: The Training Game Competition - Team 1

Took me a while longer than I suspected. Mianly I spent a lot of time planning, probably in vain. WIll see if I can play tomorrow morning again.

Grimjack

The call has been sent out, there is a price on Viking heads. Grimjack enters the fray.
I start by checking out the lay of teh land. We have a spare Vet in Minsk and Kiev. When/if we want to use them,
we better make sure we do not lose control to the mobs. We have 9 spare vets in Odessa. Prime targets are Stockholm,
where there are iron. Birka, which was really 'ours', and not to forget Copenhagen where we have diamonds. We are suckers for

diamonds. Would be great if we could raze Trondheim also, as that would severely cripple teh Vikings, while guaranteeing us a

good peace-offering.

We also have a smaller bounty, but probably just as important, on Beijing and SHanghai. These are Chinese cities, but we

should strike at them while they are weak, in order to secure our own borders.

Looking at workers available for clearing a jungle road, it doesn't really loko very feasible ( yet. ) Although we do not

have many squares in need of improvements, we also do not have very many workers. I expect to build many workers out of

Moscow.

Since we now will be concentarting on war while the going is relatively easy, I nix research. This nets us a grand total of 4
gpt :)
Lux is at 10%, and we need to keep it there for some time.
I feel a need to veto the Barracks in Minsk. We already have three barracks, and getting another in our hintermost city does
not feel like effective use. Try to doublecheck in the Sg thread if anything is said about the barracks, but forum is really
slow, and I cannot find anything in SHards notes. I switch to a Galley. With a lot of luck, we may find an island right
outside our coast. With no luck, having charted some water will let us net some gold from our World Map.
( Thought did cross my mind Barracks was placeholder for something, since we couldn't build very many things. )
We have one and a half worker on roading, and they will spend another four turns doing this. Good, it will let me gather my

more wideflung vets to the barracks for equipment refitting.

Time to check cities for MM opportunities. From SHards report, I do not expect there to be many. :p

There are three squares near St Petersburg that would help us produce more. Could get six shields easily. perhaps even eight
at size 6. More if allowed to grow larger. This leaves me with the ( for me ) tough decision on what to do with the stack of
workers by the jungle.
Kiev is also at five spt now. This is easily made into 7 if we mine current squares. ( Should we want to build
spears/archers. ) For now, when we build warriors, we are only missing one gpt for a square not roaded.
Minsk as has been mentioned above, is changed into galley. It has three spt, and is using a square not improved at all.
Smolensk has accumulated 8 shields towards barracks. This is a jungle city not good for anything for a long long time. I

change into worker. Fairly certain this is a better use of our population. Odessa is at 5 spt, and is only using improved

squares. Nothing to do here until we grow, when we can use the increased trade.
Smolensk is another sweltering jungle city. Here we actually want to build a long term project. We are building a temple. In

only 19 turns, we can whip it up :)
Tblisi is almost a jungle city. It actually has a hill and a grassland with horses. We have 2 shields after corruption. We

have 10 shields towards a barracks. Since this is a front line city, it could probably use a barracks. After thinking on it

long and hard, I decide to nix the Barracks, and make a worker instead. ( losing two shields of prokduction. ) It will be a

long time before city produces more than two shields, and if our assault proves true, our brave swordsmen will be several

turns into teh jungle, and they might as well heal on their own.
I use the same reasoning in Sverdlovsk. Sverdlovks has 10 shields towards a temple. Since we ( now ) hope to destroy

Shanghai, we would not need culture as much. I change into worker, losing one shield.
MOscow is already making worker. Great.

EG1-Grim4.jpg

Task Force west is supposed to destroy Beijing, and is they will not cede us Shanghai in settlement, destroy that as well.

Reinforcements will be light, so I expect to have to use 5-7 swordsmen, at least 4 should be vets.
Task force north have as their very important task to destroy Viking access to iron, and they will need 4 swordsmen to this.

Three of them should be vets. Task Force east should be our main force, and consist of 6 - 10 swordsmen. This is where

reinforcements should be sent as well. After destroying Birka and Copenhagen, We should make a strike for trondheim if we

have not sustained heavy losses. I want to settle a new city just west of the Diamonds. This will clear another jungkle

square, and we can use the squares already cleared by Vikings if we get cultural borders.
I have two settlers already, and I will want one with each Task force. TF west to settle next to Shanghai if that is not

ceded to us. ( prevention. Better we have it than someone else. ) TF North should settle iron to prevent someone else to get

it. Also, we will get plenty from trading iron. TF East will have a settler with them to settle diamonds. If resistance in

Scandinavia is light, we would want two more settlers to take the place of Trondheim. With our complete lack of culture, I do

not trust us to even keep a jungle city if we tried to occupy.
As to warriors, we need 15-21. We have 15 vets now, and we will build 6 more before iron is roaded. This is sufficient. Only

thing we lack is money. WIll see if we can get some sort of trading opportunity for money.

Wake up warriors in Minsk that should be in TF North or West, and send them to the cities closest to their targets.

Finally, after an hour of planning and writing. ( No I am not usually this thourough. :) )
I press the 'Next turn.'

IBT: Moscow Worker -> Settler ( Need settler in four turn for invasion. ) Minsk Galley -> Harbour. ( Thinking it would help

us trade resources. Harbour should be finished as we are able to road extra resources/luxes. ) Tblisi worker->worker.

Sverdlovsk, Worker->Worker

975BC(1) Send out Galley along coast to east. Chose east, because then it can pick up the remaining scout, should we encounter a hut on an island. Start to move TF North and West in Kiev. TF East is collected in Odessa. Ack, I mismove a worker that retreats from teh forbidding jungle. I have decided not to road the jungle. We would need to road at least two jungle squares in order to be helped, and we cannot do that before war breaks out. ( Expect war in six, and it would take 8 turns to road two jungles. Reason we need two jungles is that first jungle is third step from road after river crossing.)
While checking for trading opportunities, I sell around our world map for five gold. This is something that probably is necessary, although rather boring and repetitive. EVery turn selling world map to every player.
GPT down to 21.

IBT: St Petersburg Warrior->Warrior. Smolensk, Worker->Worker Odessa Warrior->Warrior

950BC(2) MM Moscow to use wheat, since we did not do it last turn. Can only shake out two gold for World map this turn.
We now have eight warriors in Odessa, and ten in Kiev. Two of Kievs warriors are Regular MPs though.

IBT: Kiev Warrior->Warrior

925BC(3) Boring turn with some worker movement and warrior movement. Everyone is waiting for the promised new metal people are trying to dig out of the mountains.
Doing the TRade check, notice Scandinavians has Philosophy and Literature ( and NO gold. ) Egypt has some gold, and both of those techs. England only has Philosophy. Celts of course have nothing, as the Ottomans. Chine is also without techs, as they are without money. In spite of there being the opportunity of getting two for the price of one, I will not trade. I need money for swordsmen, and I will soon be able to ask Ragnar of the Scandinavians for a MUCH better deal for us.

IBT: ST Petersburg Warrior->Swordsman Odessa Warrior->Swordsman

900BC(4) In spite of the warmongering about to happen, I take teh time to do the Odessa/Moscow Wheat dance.
MOve a spearman towards Odessa, so Odessa can have an MP after I miscalculated how many warriors to upgrade in Odessa.
After spending all oru money upgrading we have 15 swordsmen, and will have one more after next turn.Time to move out.

IBT: Moscow Settler->Settler Kiev Warrior->Swordsman English statrs to build Colossus.

875BC Moving TF North and East to their respective targets. TF West is not fully assembled for another two turns.
As usual I earn a couple of bucks selling around the New and Improved World Map.

IBT: Chinese start construction of Great Wall. I suspect we will get this tech at a bargain price as well :)

850BC Sell my world map to Ragnar, and then declare war with him.Hmm, discover we already had Construction  Thought it was newly discovered. Even if it is wartime, I do not forget to do the Odessa/Moscow wheat dance.

IBT: Watch Scandinavians move the large force of two warriors towards our lines. One of them is next to our swordstack, while the other is in the middle of the jungle.

825BC(7) Redline two warriors against Birkas two spear and one archer defender. Birka is razed :hammer:
TF East is now down to five Swordsmen, with one two turns behind, and two redlined three turns behind. TF north will occupy iron next turn. In hindsight, I should probably have waited so I could have occupied iron on first turn of war. No way of knowing how many swordsmen are building now. HOpefully they are building libraries in all tehir cities :)
TF West is starting to coem together at the western launch site. Reinforcements are also coming in nicely.

IBT: Still waiting for IBT, as I went to bed here.

Grimjack

It is 825BC, early morning. Time to let see if the Scandinavians have any claws. Just for safetys sake, I do a quick F1 check.
Lo and behold, I need to set luxes to 20%, as ST Petersburg and Minsk both have grown. Good thing I doublechecked. I also have the money for another warrior upgrade. I spend the money of course.
We have four spare vet warriors now, and in two turns we get another two swordsmen, with a third coming in three turns.

IBT: Out of Stockholm, an enraged Scandinavian swordsman comes out and kills one of our swordsmen in the jungle. We now have two warriors trekking through the trackless jungle, heading for our jungle cities no doubt.

800BC(8)
I send my newly improved Swordsman towards Stockholm way in case our three remainig swords are not enough to raze STockholm.
Road squares our citizens work, and send a worker unit to mine the newly roaded iron. We get one hit defeating the Viking swordsman, and we now occupy the formerly Viking iron hill. Lets hope they do not have any more swordsmen in Stockholm.
Make a tactical redeployment with our jungle scout, in order to keep track of Viking warrior from a bit afar.

Advance with our JungleSwords. This is surely a large jungle.
Earn a couple of gold trading our world map. Do the Moscow/Odessa wheatdance

IBT: We now have four warriors and an archer tracking towards our lands from the Viking lands. For some reason this time Jungle works to our advantage :)
MOscow settler->worker ( In preparation for Jungleclearing. ) ST Petersburg swordsman -> spear. ( We are doing 7 shields per turn. WIll see about going 8 spt with some worker actions, or we can grow one size bigger. Up to next player though. We do not really need a spear, but think it is better than archer. Temple and Courthouse are other possibilities )
Odessa will grow in one, so I set it to sword, in spite of it having 7 spt. English start Lighthouse.

775BC(9) Swordsman from Odessa is detailed to defend Moscow and Tblisi from junglecreeping Scandinavians. WIll station swordsman on road in between those cities.
Income is down to 7 gpt. We will really need to settle some cities soon now. St Pete swordsman is sent to TF west, and will complete it once he reaches the border.
I had three workers roading the jungle to Sevastapol. They are now finished, and will help build a mine on iron. Will wait with Swordsman in Smolensk until I know how the Assault on Stockholm goes. He either goes to strike junglecreepers, or reinforces a bloodied invasion force.
Scout retreats back into Tblisi. Move the TF east settler to teh coastal jungle next to the Diamonds. This square would let him work three hills once jungle is cleared. If we build our FP near here, it will be a power city. Newly build settler is moved towards Kiev in the north. Will be up to next player to decide his fate.
TF West is completed, and we will be ready to declare war next turn. I will leave that too to next player though. I do not really feel it polite to declare war on the last turn. Stockholm manages to deal us our first defeat, as their last spear kills his first attacker. STockholm is razed, and a slave is captured. Yakutsk is founded on STockholms spot. With only two swords, I send the Smolensk sword up to reinforce.
Production set to worker. Look at western front, and see that Chinese has founded Xinjian to our north. Sigh.
Celts have somehow acquired almost tech parity. Wonder if he has done some pointy stick, or cheated. I trade Construction to him for Philosophy though. Neither we nor Vikings are yet prepared to talk peace.

IBT: Kiev Swordsman->Swordsman. Two warriors are menacin Smolensk. I will move the newly produced Swordsman to defend, and Also use another swordsman to protect our road. Two Scandinavian archers seem to be heading to Sverdlovsk on our northwestern border.

750BC(10) Kill off two warriors in the east, and found Vladivostok. Gasp, a conscript warrior almost defeated our vet sword. I will have to take action to protect our red sword next to a warrior. I try to kill the warrior with one of our warrior MPs. I do not even dent him. I then move our other MP warrior and fortifies him on top.
NOtice that three hps fortified warrior is higher rated as defender than redlined sword.
I will leave this turn largely undone. Next leader will decide if we go to war against chinese or not. I will also leave without having done the dance of wheat.
Time is runing out for me, and to do this turn properly, I would have needed to wait another 8-10 hours.

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/EG1-Team1-750BC.sav

[EDIT] Fixed link. At work now, so I cannot do extensive commenting. Main choice for next leader would be if we should attack China this turn or not.
Another choice is where to send the settler in Kiev. He has 2/3 movement left. Also, a decision needs to be reached if we should try for Trondheim or not.

Grimjack

Sounds exciting! I'll wait for Speaker's comments.

Very brave of you to take the war on Grimjack! Looks like it has gone well.

I must say thank-you for devoting so much time towards this :)

@Grimjack: From the looks of it, you played a terrific turn! :goodjob:

Although we do not have many squares in need of improvements, we also do not have very many workers. I expect to build many workers out of Moscow.
This is what I like to see. Very sound reasoning. I agree with all of your changes to workers as well. You can NEVER have too many workers.

Since we now will be concentarting on war while the going is relatively easy, I nix research. This nets us a grand total of 4 gpt
No!!! We should be working on a 40-turn run on the Republic! It is way too expensive to buy and we will want to switch as soon as we can. We absolutely do not need Monarchy. Switching to it will be a wasted period of Anarchy as we will need to later switch to a more productive government.

In spite of the warmongering about to happen, I take teh time to do the Odessa/Moscow Wheat dance.
Always very important to pay attention to your city management and other matters when going to war. Unlike a real-time strategy game, you always have time to do everything! That's what I love about turn-based games.

Very sound battle plan as well, though definitely ambitious.

In hindsight, I should probably have waited so I could have occupied iron on first turn of war.
Yes you should have! Of course you couldn't have pillaged the iron on the first turn because you would have declared war from outside of Viking territory and then stepped onto the iron, using up your movement. What you could have done, however, was declare war when standing on the road between Stockholm and Trondheim and then pillaged the road. This is of course assuming that one of the road tiles was outside of Viking territory.

With our complete lack of culture, I do not trust us to even keep a jungle city if we tried to occupy.
Doesn't seem like the Vikings have much (any?) culture in their non-Trondheim cities either. These captured cities will only have one or two citizens in them anyways and these will be assimilated rather quickly (the years are still moving pretty fast). We shouldn't be afraid of flips here.

This is something that probably is necessary, although rather boring and repetitive. EVery turn selling world map to every player.
I wouldn't say necessary, as many players find it too repetitive and boring, but it is usually quite helpful. You can add around 5-7gpt just by doing a little extra work. Sounds like a good deal to me.

We have four spare vet warriors now, and in two turns we get another two swordsmen, with a third coming in three turns.
Very good work keeping up troop building during war. You never know when you will need reinforcements.

Let's make sure to keep a swordsman or two on patrol around our core to knock out any Scandinavian counter attacks. We might even want to sneak in a couple cheaper archers who can attack 1-defense units pretty effectively as well, for 2/3 the price. I would recommend grabbing Copenhagen, then killing off any spare units they send at us, trying to leader fish for a few turns, before we get a good peace deal. I'll leave the Chinese decision up to the next player, but I'd go for it! :hammer: You might want to do something about research as well....

Oh, this last line is VERY IMPORTANT. It is so important I will put it in green. As soon as we buy Currency and advance into the next age, whoever is up must save the game immediately so we can do the quiz. MAKE NO FURTHER MOVES AFTER YOU BUY CURRENCY. We will have another team excercise following the quiz. We will work on the "slingshot" together, although I doubt we will be able to get much for our free tech here since most of the world seems rather poor, but it will be a good situation to explore in any event.

Grimjack => Just played
ControlFreak => :hammer: time
Orbit => Up next
SHard => On Deck
Speaker => Awaiting the quiz!

Good luck ControlFreak!

Speaker can I ask a question about wars?

Generally, when warring is it a good idea to capture or to raze any enemy's capital? And, more specifically, in our case with Trondheim containg the Oracle, would it be a good idea to capture or to raze it?

As to tech, when I nixed research, we didn't have Philosophy, so I couldn't start a 40 turn on Republic ..
It was not until my ninth turn I acquired Philosophy from Celts. Sloppy not to realize I could go Republic here.

( Just had to doublecheck, because when I made the decision to nix research, I was fairly certain I didn't have anything useful to put beakers into. )

As regards flips, I know I play better safe than sorry. Had a few bad experiences where I lost entire invasion forces. Something that comes with experience no doubt, this knowledge of when you can safely capture.

Grimjack

I definitely try to avoid leaving a large force in any captured city. I always starve them down to 1 citizen by a)keeping their food at a starving level and b)building workers. I find it better to occupy the city with a unit or two and recapture it if need be. I try to avoid razing productive cities, unless I no longer need to keep a perfect reputation and just want to harm the other Civ.

OK, got it. Will post tomorrow or day after.

Note: Vikings have ~twice our culture so flips are definitely at risk.

If you guys have any free time between now and July 7, I would like to invite you to try Epic 30: Shogun's Challenge. It is a Deity game, but I think it would be good experience for you to try. What's the worst thing that could happen? I thoroughly enjoyed the game and Epics are a great way to improve your play, by comparing your game recap with others. If you do plan on playing, do make sure to read and follow the Epic rules, especially the no spoilers rule. Not that I think any of you would break the rules, but just thought I'd mention it anyways. Happy Civing!

Heh, we think wer need some help to become good emperor players, and you direct us to a game that is deity+ :)

Will see what I can do with the game. Should be a good excercise in trading. Having immensely fun with the Pillars of Creation EPIC

Tommy

Ok Speaker, I will give epic 30 a go. I am going to play Epic 29 and was thinking of trying Epic 30, but then I realised it was a variant harder than diety. I will try it however and I agree, it is probably a great way to improve as I can see how other players played the game.

I would have waited to get Currancy so I could finish my whole turn but an opportunity popped up that I just couldn't pass on.

(0) 750BC

Still have some moves to do here as Grimjack said. I switch to Rebulic a minimum per Speakers recommendation. Hire scientist in smolensk as its cheaper and that city can’t support another citizen with food until jungle is cleared.

First goto F1 to see whats up, sorting by spt.
  • Odessa will riot if not fixed. Still need to do the wheat swap as Grimjack said. Odessa gives up the wheat in favor of a mine. At max, Odessa is pulling in an agravating 9 spt. A mine on the hill might get it to 10 if corruption doesn't take a second sheild.
  • Moscow gets what and MM-gold needing only 2 sheilds for its build. Next in spt is St Petes. It's at 30% corruption so can't get to 10spt without at least getting 13sheilds. At 7spt I understand the spear build.
  • Kiev is at 6spt, great for building swords. Notice workers mining iron hill. With that shield and a mine on the grassland, Kiev will be at 10spt with pop=7.:goodjob:
  • Minsk is building a harbor. I look around and don't see any AI harbors, plus we need the shields, so minsk can't be a fishing village yet. I veto in favor of a barracks due next turn. Then we'll use the 5spt for swords. While looking for harbors, I see a weird map anomoly. It looks like england popped a hut with maps and sold it to us. This is VERY important though because it shows a piece of land reachable with 3 moves coast to coast. Anyone can get there! I don't remember anyone mentioning this before. Our galley is 15 turns from there if we dont meander at all.
  • Vladivostock switch to gems from hill. Still only 1 fpt but with the 3gpt on the gems, we actually can get a non corrupt gold. The hill only gave 1 corrupt sheild. There is a lot of culture pressure here so I consider switching to temple as a placeholder for library. Second thought, lets just eliminate the culture pressure with swords.
  • Sverdlovsk worker due in 1. I have 3 problems with this. First, our defense here is 1 warrior, our attack is planning on going to Beijing first so there will be no backup. Building a warrior instead will give us another unit here. Second, building a warrior drops pop back to 1 meaning if we get in trouble, we can't pop rush a unit here. Third, Shanghai has a road right to our doorstep. I one turn they could put 3 or 4 archers on the hill here, kill the scout, kill the new worker and raze our town. I decide 2 things. Switch build to warrior due next turn and change our attack plan to hit Shanghai first. The chinese roads will become ours and we will have fast movement through three turns of jungle. We will still be 2 turns from attacking Beijing.
  • Tblisi same arguements about the worker due next turn. There are a lot of viking archers, the spear and warrior may not be enough to hold them off. The spear is moved onto the mountain to prevent archers from getting a foothold there. Switch production to a spear.
  • Sevestopol still unhelpable.
  • Smolensk same arguement as before, switch to spear. Leave Yakusk on worker as its 9 turns away. I know Speaker said workers were good so I will try to build more. I just don’t want to risk our existing cities by taking pop points from slow growing cities during war.

Culturally vikes have TWICE our culture. China has half (estimated from the histogram).

OK, unit moves...
Settler join swords and goto our dyes. From here the China war will start in 3 turns. Tblisi spear move to mountain to prevent archers from getting a foothold above the town. Scout in Tblisi moves to follow the Eastern Front. Once near trondheim, the two move area will help with ... well, scouting. Sword fortifies in Tblisi. Upgrade warrior in Kiev. Settler in Kiev will wait to move until new sword is ready to escort.

Before moving the galley I sell WM for WM to Ottomans who have no gold. Celts and China buy for 1g. England WM for WM. Egypt WM for WM. Egypt and Celts have gold left. Vikes do to but I don’t want peace yet. (They offered literature and 47g to stop the insanity.) Move galley S. Sell WM for 1g to Celt and England. Move galley W, another 2g for WM. Last galley move back to coast doesn’t reveal any new map so no more gold.

BT vike warrior kills our warrior covering 1hp Sword. Two archers enter Yakusk. Archer and warrior approach Yakusk. Archer avoids Tbilisi mountain.

Moscow worker>settler. Minsk barracks>sword. Sverlovsk warrior>warrior will probably change to worker when threat from China is gone.

English start Glib.

(1) 730BC

Settler in Kiev heads toward Sevestopol. Sword in Kiev Goto Smolensk. Two Viking slaves near Smolensk enter city to use roads to head for core. Sword in Smolensk kills wounded warrior. Wounded Sword move into Smolensk to heal. Spear on mountain fortifies for better view and cover mountain. ¾ sword attack 3/3 archer in jungle near Vladivostok and loses without taking a single HP. Sword from Vlad kills same archer without losing a HP. Take swords kill 2 spears and raze Copenhagen with 1 promotion. Third sword in stack moves toward Trondheim and end next to an unseen archer in the jungle. New warrior in Sverdlovsk fortifies. Warriors done with Moscow road move E. Heading to hill that might get 10spt in Odessa. New worker in Moscow head to grass that might get 10spt in Kiev. Before galley moves, Celts WM for WM. All civs but Egypt give 1g for WM. Egypt WM for WM. Everyone but Egypt is broke. Galley S. Egypt 1g for WM. Repeat. Last sword advances out of Vlad, leaving 1 healing elite sword. Wheat swapped to Odessa. Vikes will give worker, Oslo, all gold and literature. No deal. Luxurys back to 20% with Odessa using a river tile to gain extra happiness. No other MM available. Yakusk sword woken and kills archer, resumes post in city with 3/4HP. City may fall next turn.

BT Vikes advance on Yakusk. Archer attacks and dies promoting our sword to 3/5.

(2) 710BC

St.Pete built spear order worker, MM-food. Spear sent to Smolensk in an effort to shift toward Yakusk.

Workers done on iron hill come back to help with grass mining near Kiev and St.Petes. Workers along Moscow river start and finish road on way to Odessas hill. Swords advance towards Trondheim. Map/galley/map sales continue. 2 warriors upgraded. Elite sword in Yakusk kills warrior. Veteran kills archer on hill and takes his place there. Hopefully he can survive the archer attack next turn. Wheat swap, using coast tile in Odessa to keep the happiness.

BT Vike archer dies and promotes sword on Yakusk hill. Celts found Eboracum on the shore near the Gems.

Odessa sword>sword.

Celts start Great Library.

(3) 690BC

Odessa sword Move NW towards either China or Yakusk. Moscow workers move to Odessa hill. Sword force near Kiev split between China and Yakusk. Worker stack in St.Petes finish irrigation and road on plains tile. MM to use the new tile. Workers in Minsk start roading hill. Force is in position for an attack on Shanghai. I wait until I finish doing the trades. Swords advance through jungle towards Trondheim. Yakusk 3/5 sword hills warrior losing 1 more HP. Other 3/5 sword fortifies on hill near Yakusk as lookout and healing. Trade maps for maps, Otto and China for 1g. Move galley, Sell map for 1g, Repeat for all three galley moves. Egypt the only one that could afford the last round. With rich civs and two galleys you can make upto 6gpt from each civ that can afford to pay. In our game, if they all were paying that would be 36gpt! Declare war on China. Five swords and 1 settler move next to Shanghai on roaded jungle tile to cut off easy attacking of Sverdlovsk. We end up next to a worker in the jungle also.:) Sevestopol's temple is due in 26, meaning if we can get Literature within 6 turns we can switch it to Library due soon.

Kiev MM-food, sword in 1. Moscow MM-gold using 2 river road, settler will be 2 sheilds short in two but growth should give us the mined BG to finish. Odessa keeps wheat. Scientist still in Smolensk.

BT China counterattacks with ... the worker running towards us.
St. Petes worker>horseman. Kiev sword>sword.
Ottomans built pyramids (so at least its on our continent). Others switch to Great Library.

(4) 670BC

Start with Englands map this time, sell to Celts, and Ottomans. Then Egypt WM for WM. Galley move, 1g from 4 civs we're not fighting. Galley move, 1g from Egypt. Back to coastal waters. Workers near St.Petes start an irrigated road towards Sevastopols wheat. Also start a road in Kievs forest. These roads will help troops reach China faster as well as increase GPT. First sword on Shanghai promotes their spear to 3/4. Second sword redlines but Shanghai is destroyed, capturing a settler. Third sword captures single worker. Three slaves move to Sverdlovsk dye to start a (very slow) road. Two remaining sword and settler move to river jungle SW of Shanghai rubble. Founding here will be on the river, have four mined BG and three jungle roads with two dyes.

2/5 Sword near Yakusk moves SE to Jungle for protection while healing. Sword N onto Yakusk-Molde road. Sword in Smolensk N toward Yakusk for reinforcement. Svestopol sends sword and setter to approah Beijing. Spear arrives in Smolensk relieving the Two swords who head toward Yakusk.

Odessa gives up wheat using forest and coast for enough gold to get happiness; no fpt but we're stuck at six anyway and using the wheat on odd turns. Moscow river road switched to wheat, 2 shield short of settler but growth next turn. Kiev mm-shields. St.Petes mm-shields, still grow in 2.

BT Chinese and Viking archers approach.
Moscow settler>worker, mm-gold, give up wheat. Egypt starts Great Library and Great Wall.

(5) 650BC

New settler heads to jungle E of horses. Founding there will instantly clear jungle and complete a road that is 1 tile short of Vladivostock. It will be a low corruption town in first ring of Capital and when overlap becomes a problem can use coastal tiles.

War on China: Archer is on mountain above future city cite. Warrior is 1 turn from either our scout or 3 slaves. Warrior who captured single worker, uses roads to cover workers. Scout joins them. Novgorod founded. Orders temple (prebuild). Sword throws archer corpse from mountain, going 2/4 in the process. Remaining Healthy sword fortifies in Novgorod. Wounded Sword from first battle, joins him.

War on Scandinavia: 5/5 sword on hill in Yakusk S to road on iron hill. 4/4 Sword on Yakusk-Molde road fortifies next to the three archers in the jungle. Hope the woods protection is enough. Elite sword and scout go on a pillaging run for the Horses. Other swords group and follow treeline to Trondheim.

Trading: Ottomans, Egypt and Vikings (YES!) have currency plus lit. Vikes bought it as they have 0 gold now. We still have 4 techs on Ottomans but I'm sure they can trade with Celts and England for them with their Currency. I sell them Code of Laws, Polytheism and Construction for Literature, Currency, 15 and WM. I held back MapMaking. I doubt they'll sell Currency for just MapMaking to Celts or London. Having these techs lets me switch temples now, and get cities instead of tech from Vikes. We get Monotheism as our freebie. I'll finish this turn and save for our quiz. Trade WM for WM with Egypt, England. Celts give 1g. Galley move, sell map, galley move, sell map. This would be much more worth it if someone beside Egypt had any money.

Here is the save in the turn we have Currancy.

Well played ControlFreak :). I am looking forward to this quiz now.

It looks like england popped a hut with maps and sold it to us. This is VERY important though because it shows a piece of land reachable with 3 moves coast to coast. Anyone can get there! I don't remember anyone mentioning this before.

I mentioned this in my turn, but didn't point out it was reachable with a galley. Sorry :(

Looks like some good progress in the war against the vikes - here's hoping for a leader soon. Brave decision to declare on the Chinese, but we can pull out of the Scandanavian war now if we ever are under too much pressure. Trondheim looks to be within our reach and with Trondheim comes The Oracle.

*Pulls Thinking Cap firmly over head* - Hit me with the quiz Speaker ! :)

It was noticed, but I perhaps wrongly thought it wasn't worth sending a settler to.

Well, there's still unsettled territory on our own continent so I guess that would have priority. I'm still sending the scout and galley overthere but mapping may slow this down a bit. I hope Speaker can set up this quiz before I leave for the weekend. 2 more hours.:(

Here is the much-anticipated Quiz. It may look short, but I expect thorough answers. These are all your opinion, so there are no wrong answers, per se.

1) What are the 3 biggest differences between Emperor and lower levels?
2) What are the 3 best things you have learned in this game?
3) What are 3 questions that you still have?
4) What are 3 goals you have for the next age?
5) What is 1 thing you would like from me in the next age?

And that's it! Please try to explain your answers. I'm not looking for one-word answers because the more you write, the more we (and any lurkers out there) can learn. I will be writing my own answers. Let's try to post them by Monday morning (please don't read your teammates' responses before you post) and we will have an exercise on Monday before picking up gameplay again soon after.

PS- ControlFreak, I don't know how you can live without the internet at home. I would go crazy!
