Enders Game 1: The Training Game Competition - Team 1

HI folks, I am back now. Will start to reread thread, but I will be available for my turns from now on.

Grimjack

Having read reports, and seen Speakers comment calling on the available to 'get it', I will 'Get it' and start to play tonight.

This will probably take some time, since game has changed quite a lot since last I played. WIll finish within the 72. MOst likely even within 36.

Grimjack

OK, I'm back from my weekend. I have until Friday before I leave for 10 days. Hope to play at least once. Good luck Grimjack.

Grimjack is back after a short hiatus. Daring to throw himself into the game of Diplomacy and warmongering that is known as Civ3,
we start right off the bat with the highest priority. the TDG.

Since the game has evolved considerably since last I played I spend quite some time familiarizing myself. I note the two spots for fishing-villages.
SInce we do not have any obvious sites for settler production, I will have to check more thouroughly when I go through the cities. Note we have a staggering 500 gpt surplus while still researching in four.
Will hope we get Steam as our free tech. WIll prepare workers for a Railnet, ( which will mean Game Over for most of the AIs. )

Next I check diplomacy, in order to prepare plans for my turns. I will lean rather heavily towards warmongering, as that is the aspect I enjoy most, and also, the Cossacks are so very very good at it :)
We have no deals with either Ottomans, nor with Celts. Since we would need a RoP with Egypt, and I also would like to prevent Ottomans any chance of using their UU to great effect, I will see if I can move our forces in position to strike at the Ottoman resources first, cities second.
( Will perhaps need to strike at cities first, in order to get enough move to take out their resources. )
Having learned from Speakers comments on workers, I decline to buy Englands two workers, and instead clear out their gold ( 126) and get 41 gpt for Magnetism. I suspect this is quite close to Market value.
I do not do any more deals, as twenty turns in the age of our Super UU will be hard to defend. I do nto think we can win in twenty turns, but we may have put a sizeable dent in most of our opponents.
Note that is we capture Izmit, we will have move enough to occupy Ottomans second Saltpeter. Note that Stavanger, Aarhus and Hareid have chances of flipping. Will see what I can do about defensive forces there.
Ottomans are poor, so I doubt they will be able to buy into any partnerships.
Find Stalin lounging about. Options are Army or Smiths Trading. Smiths Trading would net us some 30-80 gpt during the next 50 turns. Army would be able to break through more easily into musket defended cities, as well as open up for Heroic Epic.
I doublecheck forum to see if there is any mention of Stalin and plans for his future. None found. I will get an army then to crack the Musket cities with. I am thinking Ottomans will use shields to build muskets, since they are so poor, so they cannot afford any upgrades.
I spend 100 gold investigating Izmit, which is a key city should our assault succeed in taking away both the Saltpeter in the first turn. I find Izmit is defended by two pikes. Yummy. Other news about the Ottomans are:
They have traded away one of their saltpeters, they have two iron and one horse. This makes it only necessary to take one Saltpeter source in order to deny it to Ottomans. I do not know if AIs can break trade agreements at will, so I will play it safe, and go for both of their sources in turn one of the war.
Ottomans are in Anarchy. Heh, getting yummier by the minute. Four luxuries. some of them probably imported, since they only have one of them. I think this is a good 100 spent, as I will now strike at once. Anarchy and pike defenders is an opportunity too good to pass up.

Check other targets of opportunity. Edrine has SunTzu, and Istanbul has Pyramids. We are in a Democracy, so losses should be kept low, and wars quick. We do not have any spare settlers lounging about, so we will have to keep cities we take. Due to us being in Democracy, I suspect we have to make peace before we
can comopletely eliminate the Ottomans. Time will tell.

So field plan is to use Kuibushevs Cossacks for taking Izmit, and Nankings Cossacks for Sinop. Amass a huge number of Cossacks for strike two against Adana and Istanbul in step two, and Edrine in step three. Thereafter targets of opportunity until Ottomans are ready to talk peace. We have a huge production, so some losses are acceptable.

Will do attacks, and then check cities for Micromanagement. Believe there is some, since I see smoke above one of our cities. Will perhaps do some Courhouse rushings. I am a big fan of Courthouses.
Kossack 1 shaves two hps off of the Vet Pike and retreats
Kossack 2 gets one hit and kills the Regular pike
Kossack 3 takes two hits and kills the vet pike, and Izmit is ours, along with seven resisters. Due to high flip risk, and small counterattack risk, I will just put a single Kossack into this city.
Capturing Izmit reveals a knight fortified in the mountains. I will attack this in spite of this being a low odds affair, since I much prefer to get him while I know where he is, rather than letting him counterattack where he wants.
Sinops top defender is a regular pike.
Kossack 1 is defeated while redlining him
KOssack 2 defeats the spear without taking damage
Kossack 3 is defeated by the redlined pike, promoting him
Kossack 4 defeats him after taking two hits.
Sinop is defended by 1 resister and size 6. Looks promising.
Put Sinop on Starvation Taxmen anyway.
One KOssack promotes to elite while defeating a stray warrior found at large.
Manage to capture two workers while advancing Kossacks towards stage two.

So after first turn of war, we have lost one Kossack and killed three pikes, one knight, one spear and two warriors.
We have captured two workers, and two cities, size 8 and 6. Unfortunately the size 8 is so full of resisters, I cannot starve it. Will try to build workers.
Sinop is so corrupt that I cannot get more than one shield in spite of it only having one resister. I have put only a single Kossack in each city, as I would rather lose a city, than a stack of KOssacks.
Time for checking cities. Novgorod is an amazing city that draws in 33 shields per turn net and 96 commerce net before rails and stuff. Will let most of our large cities complete current KOssack, and then set on Factory prebuilds. Counting on us being able to research factory in about 10 turns if we draw Steam, 14 otherwise.
St Petersburg has not invested any shields into Kossack, so I decide to put it on Cathedral after thinking about Kossack, Cathedral or Courthouse. St Petersburg is at 27 spt with 5 waste. Had I been sure it would reach 25 spt net, I might have gone Courthouse instead. NOw I prepare for the War weariness I am afraid will come with losses in Ottoman war.
Note that Canton, a city in our first ring around FP is working unimproved squares, and we are clearing non-river jungle with a smallish stack. WIll try to remember to push some workers here and see what they can do before rails come.
Minsk is set to bank. Change Aarhus from Aqueduct to Settler. Intend this city to build settlers. It has irrigated Floodplains as well as grass game. Lots of food here, and a coupel of settlers would let us have the option of razings, if we would venture to go up against a culture heavy foe.
Stavanger seems to be hopelessly corrupt as 33 commerce generates one beaker and one gold. It is also quite large. I rush a settler instead of teh also needed Barracks, in order to have a smaller population and get city easier to control. Tbisi is at an evil 26 spt, and I build a courthouse here to push past the magical 27 spt for Kossack in three.
Do some redeployment of citizens to trade some sectors around. Trying to think of something to get the old Viking cities to survive war wearines. Cannot think of anything, and I press return, to see what happens in Ottomans sorely pressed empire. NOticed also I could not build an Army with Stalin, since he didn't have any movement left.
Also thinking if Industrialization comes in in about 8-14 turns, could be worth it to keep him for Suffrage. Do think we can self build suffrage with factories and rails though. Should be able to clear 50-80 spt, with our best cities which ought to be much more than AIs could build.

IBT: No Ottoman counterattack. Notice several workers flee to cover. Will try hard to capture them. Kiev KOssack->Cathedral Yakutsk, Kossack->Market ( For happiness) Smolensk, Market->Barracks Odessa, KOssack->KOssack.

760AD: Adana is defended by a PIke, Spear and a Longbow, with a Catapult as fire support. This town is only size 6, and falls without losses. Elsewhere, a Longbowman in the mountains is handled with a small southern task force.
A pikeman in teh mountains, defending three workers is a target to juicy to resist, will try to take him if I have any Kossacks left after assault on Istanbul. Hmm, Istanbul is defended by a Musket on top. We have nine Kossacks that can strike this turn, and our army is still two turns away. Lets hope for some retreats instead of defeats.
First KOssack discovers a Catapult as well. It redlines but retreats.
Second Kossack wins without damage :) revealing a second Musket.
Third Kossack redlines but retreats without doing damage.
Fourth Kossack dies while doing one damage, revealing a third Musket, this one not a vet though.
Fifth Kossack redlines but wins against the regular Musket, revealing the damaged veteran Musket.
Sixth Kossack redlines musket but is killed promoting musket and revealing a pikeman
Seventh dispatches the pikeman, revealing another pikeman.

In another battle, a four hitpoint elite Kossack is killed by a veteran warrior. :(
Konya a size three city is defended by a veteran Musket. Not having many Kossack nearby, I let it be for now. WOnder a while how Ottomans managed to get the Muskets online.
The pikeman defending the three workers managed to retreat first KOssack, defeat the second, and redline the third. We have lots of woudned Kossacks now, and Istanbul is untakeable this turn.

IBT: Ottoman knight kills a KOssack in a counterattack. Have three Knights on screen now. Some production, no great changes. Finished a couple of border LIbraries, and set to Barracks. Will change if/when I capture Edrine, with the Sun Tzus academy.

770AD Capture Bursa, which is defended by pike and spear combo. A galley is torched as we enter the city.
Using two Kossacks, we kill off the elite musket defending Istanbul. ( one retreat, and one win. )
Third kossack defeats the regular pike, only to reveal another pike.
Fourth Kossack also wins, but reveals Yet Another Pike.
Some leaderfishing nets me absolutely nothing.
Amazingly enough, we still do not need to raise lux-taxes due to War weariness. Sell world map around for some spare change.

IBT: Weird. A warrior comes out of nowhere and defeats one of our Kossacks in the mountains. HOwever, this empties out the Ottomans luck, since we then defeats two Knights.
Beijing KOssack->Temple ( for a Cathedral prebuild.) Trondheim Courthouse -> Market, Sevastapol Completes Courthouse to reach 20 spt, and is set to Kossack.

780AD. This is the turn I expect Istanbul to fall. Lose an amazing six hitpoints taking out a pikeman in the mountains with our army. Set Kiev to Heroic Epic due in six.
In an almost anticlimax, we capture Istanbul with our first KOssack. It contains Sistine, as well as Pyramids. This is a city to keep :) Time to see if we can reach Edrine.
Since Edrine has a veteran musket on top, and I only have three undamaged KOssacks in range, I will use this turn to heal before I tackle Edrine. Any cities taken after Edrine will be bonus cities.
I see the first signs of War weariness, and raise lux tax to 20%. Still need entertainers in outlying large cities though.
Rush production where I think it may be useful, spending this turns income mainly. Lower science to still get ToG in one. Send a Kossack towards Stavanger as Celts moved up two horsemen near city. Stavanger is defended by two swordsmen, so it ought to hold up, but just in case.

IBT: As expected and foretold, we enter a new age upon when the full ramifications of Gravity hits us. Big Picture shows us with a comfortable lead against the English.
For some reason, we discover ancient scrolls of wisdom regarding the use of medicinal herbs, and not the knowledge of steam we had hoped for. I let lose our scientists on the path to knowledge of steam, while our worker parties will clear jungle around our forbidden palace.
Yakutsk Market->Cossak, Oslo LIbrary->Settler, Aarhus Granary->Settler, Stavanger Worker->Market, Tblisi Courthouse->Cossack Vladivostok, Cossack->Cossack, Krasnoyarsk Market->University, Dnep Cossack->Cossack, Bergen -> Riot.
Celts start SHakespeare's Theatre

Continued.....

790AD I consider gifting Greece into MOdern Age, but veto it, since they are way behind, and there really is no reason to pull up civs when they are behind. ENgland offers 101 gpt and some obsolete techs for Medicine, but since this is all they can pay, I am not certain this is market value. I will wait to see if they discover Nationalism or Steam ahead of me.
We get steam in four turns with -31 gpt. Perhaps I should revisit my plans for Medicine, but nah.
Get full market value from Egypt, getting 400 gold, and 122 gpt and Free Artistry. ( Know it is close to full, as they would not let us include Chivalry as well. ) Make the trade.
NOw I can get Market value from Lizzy at 77 gpt, leaving her with 30. We have bound ourselves to be peaceful with Egypt for the next 20 turns, and my apologies if this disturbs the little warmongers amongst you :)
Ottomans are ready to talk peace now, but I want to capture Edrine first, and also starve the already captured cities down a bit while they are large flip risks. Perhaps later this turn or next will see peace.

Our trusty Cossack army deals with the topmost veteran Musket, only losing four hps. Edrine now has a regular pike on top. After this pike, another regular pike. This pike is no more dureable than the other pikemen, and Edrine with the Sun Tzus is ours. Will peek at other cites, to see if I can capture some more before looking at what Ottomans would offer for peace. If he is lightly defended, maybe genocide is not such a far fetched idea.
Uskudar the new capital has a regular pike on top. Somewhat more dureable pike, since it retreats our first Cossack. Killing this pike reveals a spear underneath. Uskudar falls quickly after this revelation. Ottomans are down to a 5CC. Looking at map, makes me doubt as to genocide as a solution, since Abydos is rather hard to get to, since it is on other side of English. On the other side it is a small piece of water in the way, so I rush a galley in Hangshow. Will hope three Cossacks are enough to capture this outlying city of the Ottomans.
Oops, the two workers on some fort of autoaction whizzes past before I can see where they end up. Will see what I can do about them later. Capture three more workers outside of Iznik. Also reveal that Iznik is defended by a veteran Musket.
Put the seven captured cities on starvation diet, and look for opportunities to make something with the rest of our cities. A nagging suspicion suddenly strikes me that Abydos is an Egyptian city, and not Ottoman. Also notice that Ottomans emerged from Anarchy as a Democracy. Wonder if they suffer from war wearnies as we do :) Check on F3, and see we are somewhat weak on defenses with three pikes and five muskets. There is no lack of Cossacks though, 41. I curse myself for having spent a lot of dough rushing a galley when Abydos is in fact Egyptian, and not Ottomans.
Good thing I caught this before I completed the turn, as I now can change this almost useless galley into a courthouse due in five.

IBT: Novgorod Cossack->Musket ( Novgorod is at 35 spt net, and builds a Musket ni two with no shield losses. While a musket is far inferior to a cossack, I am thinking of us somewhat soonish being able to upgrade them to Riflemen who actually are useful.
Bursa gets to size one with a rushed worker, and is set to library. Ottomans are using one of their four cities building Shakespeare's. Good move. Celts start building Smiths and English start Newtons.

800AD Start siege of Iznik. Doesn't start very good, as the vet defending Musket manages to retreat two Cossacks before even getting hit. Our third Cossack defeats the regular Musket that was revealed, and once more it is the super musket defending. Supermusket redlines but kills our Cossack, revealing a spear defending. Killing spear reveals another spear.
This spear redlines our elite Cossack before it falls, but falls it does, reveailing the redlined musket. Super musket redlines our musket, but finally falls after redlining three cossacks and killing one. With the musket also falls Iznik.
Antalayas pike is defeated by our last Cossack with moves remaining, revealing a spear. Use another Cossack from far away to defeat spear, and our wounded army to defeat the Longbow at the bottom, and Ottomans are reduced to 2CC. Got a bit scared though, as our army got hit three times in a row by the Longbow.
War weariness still low, and 20% luxes is enough to keep up production empire wide. ( WIth some clowns in ex-Viking lands. )

IBT: Moment of truth, this may be the last time I need to be scared of flips. Beijing Cossack -> Shakespeares' ( Prebuild for Factory. ) Smolensk, Barracks->Cossack, Odessa Cossack->Cathedral ( prebuild) Sverdlovsk Musket->Cossack, Tsingtao Library->Courthouse, Hareid Barracks->Cossack, Molde Barracks->Cossack
Egyptians start Newton's

810 Aydin has a valiant piek on top. It redlines and retreats our first Cossack without taking damage. It redlines and promotes when it kills our second Cossack. We then get damaged but defeats both the spear and pike only to reveal a Longbow. With some trepidation I chance our army against the longbow. Our army only has four hps, butit manages to win without sweat.
Konya has two Musket defenders, but we take this city without losses, and in 810, Ottomans are no more. Time to spend muchos effort in managing our cities, and moving our forces towards Celtish borders. I do not think building galleons to be a valid move at this point, and we ought to be able to reach Domination by conquering this continent.

Sell a few barracks and Granaries we no longer need. I am not zealous about finding them, since they no longer costs us gpt.

IBT: Novgorod Musket->Military Academy ( prebuild) Minsk Bank->Magellans ( Prebuild), Sevastapol Cossack->Bank ( prebuild) Tblisi Cossack->Newtons ( prebuild)

820 Movement of our Cossacks to the other end of our empire. Income reaches 731 gpt with Steam in one.

IBT: Alexander offers Chivalry for Magnetism. Dream on Alex. We learn Steam, and I set sights on Industrialization.
St Petersburg Cathedral->Colloseum prebuild :band: We get message about ironworks..... Kuibyshev Musket->Cossack
English city of NOttingham completes Smiths trading. :( ( WOuld have liked to use it for prebuild a couple of turns more. )
Delphi in Greece completes Shakespeare's in the cascade.

830 Great railing competition is started. EVery single available worker is set to build milnet towards front. If Iron works city is one of our larger cities, this will also be railed fast.
Iron works is Yakutsk, a size eleven city in our second ring. We also had two near misses where we could have had Ironi works if AI had been better at placing cities in order to get at invisible resources.
Yakutsk is changed from Cossack to Iron Works. Rush a Market in Moscow, as I had forgotten to set production to worker last turn :smoke: Readjust Science for Industrialization in 4.
No one has anything close to the worth of Steam to offer us, so no one gets any Steam.

IBT: Moscow Market->WOrker Beijing is set to Palace prebuild, Canton University -> Bank, Kiev Completes Heroic Epic, and is set to Factory prebuild ( Cathedral) AArhus Settler->Worker Hanchow Courthouse->University
Thebes Completes Newton's. and Elephantine completes Magellan's

840 Railroading en masse. Goes really fast when workers are on rails. Will soon start specific improvements, as first priority is to get a railnet.
( Or rather I will leave Micromanaging production in cities to next player :) As I will the decision on if we should go Sanitation before Scientific Method. I would recommend Sanitation, as size 20 factoried and railed city coule pump Cossacks like crazy. )

IBT: Renegotiate lux deal with ALexander. I pay Theory of Gravity, Military Tradition and 15 gpt for his two luxes. I will let him research Magnetism by himself. Do not want him to get to fast intop modern age.
Vladivostok Cossack->Marketplace, Riga Market->Courthouse

850 Railing continue, and now I think railnet is complete enough so that specific cities may be railed and mined. Note that you will need to use a scroll ahead to change Tblisi to Factory, as otherwise you will get a Colloseum.
I have not spent much energy cramming the last gold coin out of cities, especially now after railing has started I expect there to be opportunities for those who are so inclined. I think our military advantage is big enough so that we can win speedily even without maximum optimization, and I therefore try to optimize my time instead :)

I hope Celts are dispatched fast, as they are way behind in tech, and we have much troops. Our army has been stuck in Ayden healing itself. It will be available in a turn or two at the Celtish front.
Sorry about messing up MOscows worker factory. It can now be MMed down to size six again if you want to, or it can be allowed to grow while making it a shield city instead. We do have quite a lot of workers, although we could of course still use some more.

Amazing turns Grimjack!:goodjob: We can definitely hit Egypt or England if we want to, regardless of the deal you made. If we were giving them gpt, then it would be exploitative, but since they are paying us, we will not be breaking our side of the deal, which is the important point. Let's get those factories rushed (we have a huge income) and crank out more Cossacks, let's cancel our lux deals with England to slow them down, and let's stay on the warpath. I think the best move might be to hit England first, before they get a meaningful number of Riflemen to slow us down. Then we will move on and take out the Celts and hit Egypt when our deal is up (may as well take their money) if we need their land to win. This is your mission if you choose to accept it ControlFreak. :hammer:

I repeat do not fear breaking this deal.

I will comment later on your turns Grimjack, but I want this game to keep moving.

ControlFreak => Up now
Speaker => On deck

FYI, Hangchow is an Iron Works city too with more mountains than Yakutsk. Yakutsk should easily be able to build a Cossack per turn once it has a factory, however, and should be our top worker priority after the military railnet. Remember we are still in our GA and it will run out soonish. Luckily we only need two more techs after Industrialization in my estimation--Nationalism and Sanitation. Check that you can adjust the science slider....

There might be a slight problem with hitting the English .....
I have moved most of our Cossacks to our far northeastern outpost, and railnet is not complete to our northwestern outposts. We can hit Egypt or/and Celts though.

Good to know that it is not exloitive to break deals where you lose money on breaking it :)

I did perhaps go a bit overenthusiastic on the warmongering, and micromanaging cities as rails came online was not something I prioritized.. It is a huge timesink, and in my opinion not worth it until you also have workers available for mining.

:o , missed Hangchow. Hangshow might be a better city for ironworks than Yakutsk, since it probably has less corruption.

As to science slider, a question:
I was under the impression science worked just like the build/food boxes. You put the beakers in until it was full. If this is true, is there any big point in adjusting the science slider when there is two turns left on a four turn research ?

Absolutely. Say you need 100 beakers to get a tech and you make 33 per turn. After three turns you have 99, so the 4th turn you turn down science to 10%, but still make 5 beakers. That is 4 wasted beakers which could have been devoted to cash instead. Ok bad example because a lone scientist could have picked up the last beaker, but you know what I mean. It is generally less wasteful to adjust whenever you can still get the tech in the same number of turns.

Point taken. Thanks for explaining.

Should have realized, but brain was stuck on wrong track.

But it will take much longer to get the city up to speed, with several jungle tiles still to clear and mountin tiles to mine. We should be able to get Yakutsk up to a Cossak per turn pretty soon and that will be all we need from the Iron Works city.

I started this at 9PM and all of a sudden it's 6AM. Time to go to work with no sleep.

Preturn analysis(TM)
Cities
Sort by sheilds and see the first 8 cities are all building prebuilds for factories including a palace and a Military Academy.
Moscow is the first nonprebuild. Looking closely at this using the cow, mine and two irrigated grasslands we can get our 11sheilds for worker. Problem is we need +20fpt to get growth in 1. The cow is railed as is one irrigated grassland. The wheat and three other irrigated grasslands in use are not railed. Right now we're at +14fpt using the above tiles for shilds and all irrigated grass for the rest. We can get +4fpt more by railing the irrigated grass and wheat leaving us +2fpt short. That is one irrigated/railed grassland, meaning we need to be at size 8 at least. Anything above 8 will still get 20fpt as long as additional citizens work at least 2food tiles. There are 2 grass tiles unworked at our size 7 and 2 hills. If I irrigate both grasses (currently mined) I can get moscow to size 11, using all the remaining tiles and still build workers every turn. So, my plan is to build some infrastucture and let moscow grow while using a small detail to rail the irrigated tiles and make the needed conversions. Switch to bank (will not need a factory here so I'll let it complete). Choose bank over uni because we're going to be done with research soon, plus bank is cheaper to maintain.:)
All towns above 10spt are switched to colliseum except for palace, mil acad, ironworks and Moscow. That way I can switch to Factories easier. Note that this include some towns that were building Cossacks.

Switch Konya from harbor to library. I know it can't grow past 2 without a harbor but I think that the tile limit is more important than the pop limit right now and Konya is 95%corrupt. Switch Edrine from musket to library. Switch Reyjavik from temple to market as it's already employing 2 specialists at size 12 and it has 298 turns before border expansion. (2cpt from temple won't help) It's rushed for 184g because it will pay itself off in no time and we can skim a worker from here next turn.

Sell all barracks and granaries. I stopped counting after 20. Money goes to rush another market: Trondhiem market rushed for 208.

Stavenger court rushed for 296g. If this brings corruption down to manageable, we can get lots of workers from here too.
Iznik court rushed for 300g. There's lots of sheilds here so if corruption becomes reduced we gain a lot. worker queued here as we're maxed at 7.

I forgo the tile micromanagement.

Sliders
Drop science slider to 60%, still due in 2.
I note that I can get 11 cities into WLTCD if I raise lux to 10% (78gpt). Since we're in our GA and we're trying to build towards factories I go for it. My only fear is that Tblisi will get so happy that it builds its coliseum in 1 instead of 2 (it's short by 3s.) Another reasoning is that Yakusk, going for the Iron works will grow out of WLTKD next turn and lose the benefit unless I already have lux set for it.

Targets
England loses our dyes, spices and gems but gains their 53gpt back. I consider selling them coal for 29gpt to recoup some of our loss but decide I want to be able to oscillate war with them. All remaining deals are them paying us gpt (cancelable). They're annoyed.

Greece (not really a target yet) is at par in tech. The right of passage deal has done it's 20turns. I renegociate and get an extra 2gpt for it. They are in need of coal. I see no reason not to supply them . Coal for 11gpt +160g. They're polite.

Egypt has no gpt, 21g. But they do have 2 very important things: wines and possession of the choke point between us and Celts. There's two ways to go here. The first would be a ROP, the second declare war on them too and take the city. With low defenses and a very long front, I decide I'm not prepared for war with Egypt (at least not right now). I get ROP without taking their 21g so I can declare without ruining our rep.

Celts have nothing but 1g which I grab by selling our WM. No deals in progress. They're furious.
Two cossack spies are sent forth and see spears guarding Gergovia and Augusttodurum. I declare war.

Gergovia:
Cossack v spear win 1/4
Cossack v spear win 4/4
Cossack v spear win 3/4, capture>library

Augustodurum:
Cossack v spear promote 3/5
Cossack v spear die 1/3
Cossack v spear win 4/4
E.Cossack v red.spear win 5/5, capture

in the field:
Cossack v horse(plains) win 4/4
Cossacks (2) capture workers (3)

There are 3 horses on hills but they're now in Egypts land (let my people go). The is one horse on the mountain above Gergovia. I have a much better chance defending Gergovia, fortified on a hill than attacking against a mountain so I decide to leave these horses roaming. Now that we own the two towns, the horses on hills can't attack without ending on flat ground, so I let them alone. I will try to watch out though as they have an ROP with Egypt. I upgrade Stavengers pike to musket for 30g. Refortify the swords. All remaining Cossacks move to the chokepoint and fortify (they were 1 turn short of attacking Lugdunum so I stayed out of catapult range.)

I kept the cities because I think the Celts will be gone before too long. Although they are a flip risk to Egypt since their borders aren't expanded.

Press enter.

BT Celt horse mountain>hill. Horse in egypt joins him. Two horses on hill move to desert next to our workers.

Trondheim market>coliseum.
Reykjavik market>worker. Specialists fired and MM-shields, worker in 1.
WLTCD somewhere.
Iznik court>worker. can get 3spt if it makes 22spt total but can't work the mountains without starving.
Stavenger court>market. It too can make 3spt if total production is 21spt.
Adana worker>library.
WLTCD in a lot of cities.

(1)860AD

Our army sent to the end of the railroad. Free movement next turn.
Musket "changing of the guard" in Sinop. His Cossack predessesor travels the entire continent and kills a horse in the desert near our workers 4/4.
E.Cos kills other horse and then covers worker within range of horses on hill.

Lugdunum:
Cos v spear die promoting spear to 2/4
Cos v spear win 3/4
E.Cos v 2/4 spear win 4/5. Capture>library 2 of 5 resist.

There are some Cossacks fortified near Hareid. They can hit Egypt's salt peter or cross with ROP and hit England. Salt is now only important for Calvary as everyone is building rifles. Moscow is (I hope) back to a 1turn worker farm. I've managed a bunch of cities to 40spt which is Cossack in 2 with no waste. That was how I was prioritizing worker actions after I finished the military road net. I made no plans so feel free to change whatever.
EDIT: Here's the SAVE

Heh, this one got a chuckle of recognition from me:

I started this at 9PM and all of a sudden it's 6AM. Time to go to work with no sleep.

Also, I saw you signed a RoP with Egypt. I am curious as to why. If I remember correctly, Egypt only had a two square stretch of land. We could have crossed that without their noticing.
This also raises the question, if it would be considered OK to cancel the RoP before the 20 turns are up? ( as long as we do not violate it of course.)

Otherwise, amazing set of turns. I find it hard to put up the energy to maximize the small cities when the game has proceeded this far.

So, are there anyone available to play now ? ( Except me and Speaker that is. )

About the ROP. Egypt's roads were key to capturing the cities I did on the first turn. I have since come to realize that if you take the first city, all the road become yours and 3 movement units really take advantage of this. Even so, I felt that the advantage gained by a ROP were enough to justify it. The celts had an ROP and could easily move their horses taking advantage of this. I wanted to minimize that advantage. (I didn't know they would be such a pushover.) I also felt that we're not making a ton of money off of ROPs and we share borders with everyone so we don't need anymore ROPs. I figured we could break the ROP if it suited our purpose. I was still planning on pulling our troops out of Egypt before declaring though. I'm not sure if that saves our ROP rep or not.

It's looking like that was my last post in this game. I won't be able to play after tonight and I think whoever plays should finish this off by the time I come back. I think there are eight or more cities capable of making Cossacks every 2 turns. I think they will still be effective against rifles, even in large cities.

Good luck every one. I'll check in when I come back. And thanks for a very fun and informative game.

Thanks for your participation ControlFreak. I have certainly learned a lot about micromanagement from reading your comments and seeing the results. Being priomarily a tactics wargamer, this was/is an area where I need a lot of improvement.

It does no longer matter if AIs have rifles, as we can soak up all but the most extreme losses. Key to speedy victory would be to bring along enough Cossack to ensure capture, and keep cities so we would not need to build settlers as well.

Hopefully cleansing our continent of peeps would be enough for that purpose.

Lets strike hard and fast before the AIs make it tedious.
