Enemy Ace asks: Are you selfless or uncaring?

But you only have enough to buy your errand.

I'd get the gift, my friends and family are wort more to me then a junkie and her swindling with her kids.

I'd pull over and help them, they're probobly still decent people

I'd help her, if a company can't accept me for being a good samaratin then I'd want nothing to do with that company.

Do you run up, confront the goons, and join the man in hospital or the morgue? Or ignore the incident?

I'd call the cops assoon as I was a good distance away, I'm a weekling and would have no chance in a fight

I never give money to anyone like this directly. I will take them to someplace the either serves food or sells foodstuffs and get them something to eat.
I actually lived in a apartment building in which a drugged mother and her kids were nearby. The kids and her were constantly asking for money for food. I would feed the children and give food to the mother, but never anything that could be sold for drugs. The mother stopped asking and the children knew where to come when they were hungry. The mother was arrested shortly thereafter and sent to prison, the children to Child Protective Services. This after all, is as much an abuse question as the last.

This one depends on who is in the car with me. If I am by myself, I will call for help, stop and render aid. If I am with my wife and kids. I will call for help, place my family at a save distance, get out render aid and allow my family to leave if needed. My first priority is to my family. I will however, stop and render aid to anyone regardless of race and/or social status. Many times, those that you would most like to avoid are those that are the most likely to need your help.

I would stop and render all needed help regardless. If I lose a jpb or miss an important appointment then so be it. Some things are worth a little less comfort. Most times you will find that once you explain your reasons, it will actually help you get that position, or will lead to a better job. I will more likely hire the fellow who is late for this kind of reason, than the person who is on-time.

Call the police very loudly on my cell phone. This will most of the time make them leave, as they don't want to be there when the cops arrive. If they don't leave or don't care, then you do what you need to do to stop, even if it means harm to yourself. Maybe the few seconds they spend in conflict with you will enable the police to arrive before it is too late for the other person. There is only one greater cause you can give your life to other than saving another human.

First, he would know that I know his secret because I would not stand by and watch him beat his children. I would call the cops right away and then do what was needed to stop him from doing farther harm to his children. There is no question of keeping his secret or not.

These are not just "altuistic" answers, they are things I would do and have done.

Oh well, you are honest, and that is good enough for me!
:)
OK... :p

1) I'll report her to the police. She'd probably be taken into a drug rehab center and the kids will be temporarily put in homes. At least it'll help her kick the habit, and give her a chance to rejoin society.

A drug junkie is someone taking drugs right?

2) I'd drive off w/o further thought. Can't imagine anybody w/o a mobile phone these days. They can call for help themselves.

Furthermore, in these parts, 'normal' people dress normally. People who dress like thugs almost always are thugs.

Actually, all posters reactions are good.

It is just some are more meaningful to me,
but any answers are worthy and I appreciate the time posters take to get involved.

1. Never had this issue. I have been aproached by someone who wanted money to buy a drink and I refused because I wasn't sure how much change I needed for an errand. Does this count?

2. Call 999. There's sweet sod all I could do to help whether I wanted to or not. Assuming the worst, the time it takes me to drive to a hospital would be longer than it takes an ambulance to drive to the scene.

3. Help the old lady and file unfair dismissal. I have done something similar before and I lost out :(

4. I would try to draw the thugs away, or impersonate a police officer. Or run to a pub and claim there were homosexuals beating up a family man :p

5. Report this individual, without doubt.

Tough questions, I know.
But I am really eager to know what your level of caring for others actually is.
Please be honest and don’t answer just to appear like a ‘good guy’ to your fellow posters.

Thanks for taking part. :)

1.) Assess the situation on its merits, and if they are proper, give them food, rather than money. Keep tabs on the situation, and if the individual had misused goodwill and charity, then get medieval.

2.) Carefully proceed and examine what is happening. There is a line between Samiritanism and gullibility.

3.) Help the aged lady of course.

4.) Approach the group and end their activity. Unless of course they had a permit to beat the man, or were doing so under my auspices.

5.) If the application of corporal punishment crosses the line of what one perceives as acceptable, then take appropriate measures.

In all cases, my honour is my loyalty - I do what I would hope others would do. Give them a chance, and if they fail, then take appropriate action.

I started to answer the questions then decided that most of them are too extreme to really measure selfishness... The gang questions are at least in part a matter of self-preservation, so they are more a measure of BRAVERY than a measure of CARING.

Giving money to a junkie, even one w/ kids, might not do any good for the junkie or her kids. It is a measure of FAITH (or OPTIMISM,) not a measure of CARING.

Helping the old lady is the right thing to do, but it's hard to imagine an appointment so urgent that I would actually lose a job over it... Most people would understand. Even if I were interviewing for my dream job I could probably reschedule. In the real world appointments are cancelled and rescheduled all the time.

The abusive father MUST be reported, to protect the child and (hopefully) stop the cycle of abuse -- if I am 100% certain it is happening, as you speculate in the question.

I would suggest the following questions:

Would you rather be personally wealthy for life OR sustainable raise the standard of living for all humans on Earth to the American/Western European/Japanese std of living -- BUT receive NO credit for it...?

Do you donate your time and/or money to a worthy cause or two?

When strangers or people you are not obligated to come to you with problems do you listen to them?

Would you rather give a great gift -- or receive it?

How important is recognition to you? Would you (or do you) do nice things for others anonymously?

Would you go out of your way to help someone who will clearly benefit from it but is oblivious or refuses to admit that they benefit from it? For example, you have the opportunity to take in your homeless willful snot-nosed punk nephew who needs your help but is moderately hostile towards you and will never thank you for it.

What is your capacity to forgive?

What is your capacity for suffering if the cause is righteous and good? Would you go to jail for several years to save a life or to strike a blow for freedom and human rights?

Would you sacrifice your health to save a life? For example, lose a limb, scorch the lining of your lungs, become paralyzed or lose your vision? Not just risk your health -- actually surrender it for the sake of another? Especially if it was not your child or spouse or close friend/family member...

Would you give up meat or sex or driving or your computer if it were somehow PROVEN that it would have a major beneficial effect on the world?

I'll spare the time: I want to be a good Christian, but I'm really a Machiavellian jerk. :(

But, you already knew that.

I would go buy her some groceries. At least, that is what I would like to do. Most of the time, I would probably just ignore her. But if she started crying...I'd buy her groceries. How do I know she won't spend the money on drugs?

I would pull over. If gansta rappers shot me when I was trying to help them, they are dumb. Normally I'd just call 911, but if they were waving their arms for help...

Of course I report it. Nothing sickens me more than the beating of children.

1. I would call child welfare (or whatever that's called) since something is extremely wrong there
2. Ask what was wrong and if anything was wrong, i would help them...
3. Help the old Woman, if anyone would fire you for doing that they arent worth working for....
4. Help the victim
5. Ask him what the he|| is wrong, and if it wasnt legimate, call child welfare

1. I would try to get rid of the beggars, (I always ignore beggars) and go on to buy the pie.
2. I would stop and ask them what's happening, call the police if it's something serious, try to help them if something minor which I can help with.
3. I would help the old woman, and then when I arrive to the appointment, I would explain why I'm late. I'm sure they'd understand.
4. I'd call the police, but wouldn't get involved. Because if there are lots of them and they are armed, then there is nothing I can do.
5. I would probably talk to him and warn him that I know what he is doing and if he crosses the line again, I'll inform the authorities.

I would help the nice old lady, call the paramedics and then try
to get her off my tail.

I have always been a nice boy. :) :D :jesus:

Some of these answers seem too good to be true.

Maybe I just refuse to accept that I am a jerk... Forgive me, but I think people are answering with "what I would want myself to do" rather than "what I have done when faced with similar situations".

1- I'd feel bad and give it to her, then buy the pie with my credit card. (although I don't usaully give money to beggars, instead i donate to charities) but in that case you are so pressured

2- Wouldn't pick um up, but if I had a cell phone I'd phone the police.

3- Of course I'd help her up

4- Assuming I have my cell phone, I'd dial 911 and then yell at the bastards "I just phoned the police and there on there way." If I didn't have my phone I'd bluff and still say i called the police

5- Report

1. Tell her to **** off and get out of my way.

2. Ignore them and keep driving.

3. I'd say "Hey, you ok?" and "Help, is on the way." Then, I'd call some people to haul her away in an ambulance on my way to work. Sorry, with the job market the way it is I can't afford to lose it.

4. Ah, depends on the situation. But how do I know he's innocent? He could of had it coming. Anyway, I'm not gonna get sent to the morgue for some guy.

5. I'd report it. I hate my neighbors.

Good questions Mr. Sibling. I hope my answers are satisfactory. I'm not one of the caring lot.

1 buy the drugs myself
2 pull out my pumpgun and steal their car, shooting em
3 assign the girl to my others
4 practicing targets
5 want some trouble, man, beating your children
