England in Civ 6 should be renamed Imperialism: The civilization.

Here is the Official Strategy Guide for them:

1. Build a capital. Start building a naval infrastructure and build a fleet of seadogs to plunder other fleets and bully weaker nations.

2. Colonize/conquer cities in new continents, build Royal Navy Dockyards for maximum £££.

3. Uh oh! Trouble in colonies. Send Redcoats in for a jolly good show!

4. Pump out archeologists to steamy jungles of faraway lands to collect prized artifacts, stuff them in the British Museum.

5. A competing great power getting too strong? Royal Navy blockade followed buy bombing of districts by Royal Air Force

Gotta love this more agressive England in Civ 6.

Am I the only one who wishes that the Redcoats looked more Victorian?
Something like this maybe:

Right now they look like US War of Independence era Redcoats which predate Victoria by quite a bit. Basing them on the Zulu War era infantry would've been pretty neat imho but I guess the Independence War era ones are just more iconic, especially in the US.

I second to this.

What really matter is that 2k/Firaxis is a American company, perhaps the appearance of British soldier during the Independent War era is the memory of the Americans.

Great post Haig, I see the England Civ with new eyes now.

I only hope the naval AI and the sea in general don't suck like last time.

The lead designer this time around was also responsible for trade routes in 5, right? Nothing gives me greater confidence in Civ 6. It's just a mystery why we had to get two expansions into the series' fifth instalment for trade to be given anything like a fair shake.

"About 44 percent of the world’s population lives within 150 kilometres of the sea." Not in Civ 5. My megacities are all in landlocked desert floodplains with 5 grain. And because population basically = science, a coastal civilisation is likely to be a technological laggard. I don't have to tell you how backwards that is.

That's where IGE comes in: I always hand place at least 2 fish in every coastal city I found [mine] or meet [AI's]. The lack of naturally generated fish in Civ5 is disturbing.

Depends on which unit they replace. If they replace Riflemen, then you're right. But if they replace Musketmen, then they look pretty much as they should.

I'm kinda worried whether there's even a rifleman in Civ6. So far we haven't seen them anywhere even though it's was a pretty common unit in previous games, added to that the staged industrial era screenshot showed musketmen along with cannons and cavalry. :(

We do get ethnic variations for commonly shared units, perhaps the British equivalent of the riflemen will look like that.

Remember that the game is still under development. Some units etc. may not be appearing in videos simply because they aren't finished.

When the devs mentioned the Corps and Army system, they specifically mentioned riflemen.

Even in the napoleonic wars in the early 1800's, when the real iconic redcoat as a superior infantry mystique formed, the redcoats were largely musketmen, and still the huge bulk of infantry, while rifleman were greencoats if Mr. Cornwell is to be believed.

Redcoats for the majority of their lifespan, from the 1600's to the 1800's were not riflemen :goodjob:

Also bear in mind it has never been stated that the redcoats are part of Victoria's bonuses, so we have little reason to believe they should be the rifleman form at all.

Well I'm certainly not keen to see the redcoats made to look like those from one of the most disastrous periods in British military history. You can take your pick from a number of humiliating defeats -- in the Crimea, the Afghan wars, being massacred by the Zulus, the Boer war (not fought in red, but still under Victoria).

It is worth remembering that the British Empire really began to take off in the 18th century, not the 19th, which was more of a period of consolidation and development of what had already been taken by military force. (Consider British military successes in Canada and India in the mid 18th century, then the colonisation of Australia and New Zealand.) Better to remember Wolfe and Clive rather than Cardigan and Redvers Buller. Unless you like looking on the dark side, of course!

Reflecting on this, it seems to me that anyone who plays as England will have to wait a very long time before they get any civ-specific bonuses. Civs that have earlier bonuses are going to get a kick start. I've often wondered at the wisdom of this. Perhaps some people like trying to catch up with runaways, but I don't. Each to their own, I suppose.

mbbcam:

I like both the Magnificent victories and the epic last stands and catastrophies in the British military lore. Sometimes I feel the bittersweet lessons of lost battles have their own place next to every Agincourt and Trafalgar..

Just read Battle of Crete by Anthony Beevor, interesting and sometimes melancholy book of a battle lost with many eccentric British adventurers and officers. I like the Lawrence of Arabia style heroes of the empire.
