Okay, I was just on a road trip, and a question occurred to us.

What superhero (I prefer DC or Marvel) would you rank being equivalent (offensively and defensively) to the Enterprise D?

Out of interest, how did this question come about?

Brilliant it is though, just a pity my comic-inclined friend isn't online, he would give the answers.

Okay, so I got an answer. I'll stress now that I just a messenger, I have no idea about such things and am passing on his reply.

The answer is...Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner.)

I didn't get any specifics other than "he uses energy for his attacks on the same scale as phasers and can throw up a shield like a ship can."

So - he thinks that a GL vs. Enterprise fight would be rather drawn out and maybe a stalemate?

Enterprise seems to have trouble drilling holes in rock with their phasors - can GL do more than that?

I got the impression you were looking for an equivalent opponent, so such a drawn out battle would support that.

Messenger Relay time for the GL powers: GL can drill in rock

I'm taking that to be a yes, he can blast holes in rock. There's probably a Wiki entry for him btw.

Rocks tend to explode when hit by phasers.

But there isn't a single super hero that I can think of that can travel faster than light. Sorry superheros just don't compare to a spaceship.

Phasers operate on a simple Plot-Device Principle - They do whatever the writers want them to. As such, though you'll sometimes see them have trouble with randomly named materials, other days you'll see them punch holes through ships that devour half hull.

Or a more serious, and definately more geeky note, most of the places I've been to that delve into trying to make sense of science fiction have concluded that these are chain reaction weapons, the disrupt atoms in such a way that destroys them without releasing a lot of ambient energy. They chew up some materials (Most organisms, certain metals, various types of minerals) like fresh bread, but are stopped dead by others. (Packing crates)

Superman does in Superman I the movie, so he can go back in time and save Louis  not going to go into why this wont work, bloody hell :) but that's colossal BS right, there remaking it so I heard.

What is a phaser anyway, phased light? Nope not up to the tasks it portrays, we've come along way since we asserted that Nuclear radiation can mutate someone given some wierd scientific nonsense :) People are more sophisticated now, but let's not make comics catch up that's their inherent charm.

On a closely related subject I bought a book not so long ago which is an X-Men - TNG crossover. I came across it when browsing and my curiosity was peaked, I haven't had a chance to read it yet

As for the subject, I reckon if Magneto got close enough to the E-D he could rip it apart. But the E-Ds shields and phasers might put up a good fight. Also lack of oxygen in space might be a problem.

I had a similar debate with a friend, who would win in a fight between the fellowhip of the ring and Harry Potter and his crew???

i think the ring boys but the debate still rages.

Silver Surfer.

I think the Enterprise would win, because they can use their transporter and mess around with the safety protocols.

Yeah, kirk when the enterprise encountered a black hole (or something). He used the sun's gravity to silingshot back to his own time. Both are equally unrealistic ways of traveling through time.

Well sure all superheros, science fiction, and fantasy in inherently impossible.

Hard to say. Much of Harry's magic can make conventional melee warfare useless. A simple leglocker curse could take out at least half the Fellowship. Gandalf would be the onlyone that could put up a decent fight.

Nuh uh, cause Kirk used a warp drive too. :smug:
