I have been following soccer since very young. I always admired the English team for the pace, commitment etc. That was until it got a 'so called' coach called Eriksson.
In my mind this guys knows little about soccer, he is a good conman. He is highly overpaid and uses horrible tactics. The English team (every since he took charge) plays more like a German team would have played in the past. Looking for that 1 goal and then sit back. Luckily it didn't really work out in those WC's.

Now, I read the latest 'news' how he was tricked by some journalist and had a good laugh. I am wondering how long English fans will tolerate this guy.

I mean, look at it this way. What does it tell you about a coach.

1. a team with mainly nobody's and also rans, but as a team plays well
2. a team with gifted players and talent aplenty, but as a team plays poor

No1 would be Greece or Korea (last WC)
No2 would be England
Tells you a lot about the quality of a coach. I am afraid England will say goodbye during the WC when they meet Germany in the QF

Basically the latest incident seems to have actually increased support for Sven because the News of the World doesn't have a great reputation and the common response has been why did they choose to run the entrapment with the world cup reasonably close. I guess they want England to be unsettled and thus lose which maybe isn't surprising considering the owner. :)

Personally I find the actions of the paper to be outrageous. I mean, give the guy a break. He is quite capable of getting into trouble of his own making without trying to entrap him.

All this turmoil for no other reason than trying to sell papers. England have a very talented squad and have the opertunity to do well this world cup. This sort of stuff helps nobody involved or supporting English football.

The News of the World has scraped the bottom of the barrel when it comes to gutter press.

I don't know who the owner is, Murdoch? Anyway, it doesn't matter, any english tabloid will surely hope for England's failure at the WC. Tragedies, bad news and failures always sell more. ;)

I dunno if we were to win this time then in 4 years time they'd have even more to write about when we failed.

Erikkson is good for England, because I don't want to see England get further from the group stage.

Go, go Erikson.

Let's look at what Eriksson said (allegedly)

"Rio Ferdinhand is lazy": Roy Keane aparently agrees. Hear what he said prior to leaving Old Trafford? I think many Man U fans will agree as well.

"Owen is at Newcastle for the money": Owen admitted that he would have preferred to have played for Liverpool and has been up front about this throughout the transfer. He even wrote as much in his column in The Times. (Get your own link!) I doubt Newcastle fans will care if he bangs in goals for love or money.

"Shaun Wright Phillips wasn't worth the money": Given that he has spent most of the season bench warming I'd agree.

"David Beckham is my mate": We all know the captain is untouchable. But then again in teams across the world the Captain is given my leaway than others simply because they have proved their worth. Beckham can play **** and still win a game for you with a good pass or free kick. EDIT: Just look at Raul at Madrid!

"Sven will leave if he wins the World Cup": If England perform poorly he will be sacked. Who can blame him for wanting to leave if he does well?

In short none of the above is worthy of note. It's a case of a 'news'paper drumming up a non-story for a few dollars more. I'll judge Sven by how well England do during the World Cup and nothing else because nothing else matters.

agreed on this...but judging from the past 2 cups under him, it doesn't look so rosy.

I predict a match against Germany in the second round (yes, either of them will screw up and finish second place in the group, thus facing each other straight away
In that match, England plays very well and Rooney scores a goal after 30minutes. There after, England is happy to sit back and defend only, substituting Rooney. Germany manages to equalise and the game goes all the way to a penalty shootout. needless to say who wins that one :crazyeye:

Agree with PrinceOfLeigh about the comments that he made being pretty much what anyone else would say about those players.

I wouldn't say he is a bad manager and certainly not that he knows little about football, but fact is that his preferred tactic is a Catenaccio-like one. Massed defensive with very rare attacks, hoping for a 1-0 win. That is in fact a very efficient tactic, especially when played with physically and mentally strong players without much technical ability.
And that is the problem, the current English squad includes several players with tremendous capabilities to create attractive offensive football, to dominate a match. This talent is mostly wasted by Eriksson's tactic and while the plain result might not turn out to be worse this way the attractivity of the England games will suffer from it like it did before. And should they fail they will fail playing boring football, with a different tactic they would at least go down with guns blazing...
If they win it won't matter much, of course, as Greece once again proved in 2004.

Happened to be watching ITV just now and it seems they have resorted to making up images of what they think might be happening to illustrate their stories. One was of Eriksson sitting in a chair with someone probably from the FA berating him. Whatever happened to reporting the news rather than deciding what you think may be happening?

So let me get this right - he gets the sack for knowing about corruption in the game.

Hells Bells, I'd sack him if he didn't!

He's got the best results 3 losses in 33 competetive matches, he knows the trade,...

So let's be clear. We're getting rid of him because....he's not corrupt? Too clued up? Has a career?

I'd rather keep a manager who wins games.

It's more likely he can't be arsed with the nonsense the press give him.

I was agreeing with you right up until the point you used the News of the World as a reference.

Well, it's been agreed, Eriksson will leave England after the WC...
Which means nothing has changed. He would have left anyway, either as a winner or because they won't win.

There may be a trend here...

Swedish footballer/coach cuts his laurels in the south Europe, gets hired to England for a huge was of £ and tanks gloriously.
(Eriksson - Brolin - Schwartz, well his family hated England.)

All the knowledge and ability is still there, it's just that for some reason the kind of north-south symbiosis that worked in Portugal and/or Italy doesn't work in England.

Non-English tend to think the problem may lie within the tradition and structure of English football.

Talented Swedes who make the transfer directly to England, or at least not by way of the southern leagues, tend to do well.

Yes - but thats not really the point. The man in the pub has a right to say what he wants. Sven is the England manager. What he says is said as the England manager talking publicly about his players.

Rule 1: Dont criticise your players in public.
Rule2: Dont break confidences or you will lose the trust of your team.

Sven broke both of these rules. At least he is guilty of being unprofessional. At worst, he is more interested in his own earnings than the England team.
