Error: We're sorry, but something went wrong

When I start Civ6 from the steam app, the following message appears in the Civ6 startup screen:

Something went wrong

I checked log-files, but I could not find a clue what went wrong.
Does anybody have an idea what might cause the problem?
By the way, it did not experience any difficulties while playing the game.

I don't own Civ6 nor do I have Apple computer, but I'm running the Observer game from the same publisher (*aspyr) on a Windows 10 PC and I have the same error. So I figure it has to be a problem on their end.
