Espionage

Does this make getting a settler out to the neighboring island more of a priority (that is, do we build the settler before the worker)?

I don't think it does at the moment. If there was exactly one good spot on Andromeda maybe, but for the moment there's plenty of land to be claimed. If we beat them to one spot they'll just take another.

Does our culture have to be contiguous between the two islands to connect cities to resources, or is that impossible across ocean tiles pre-Astronomy anyway?

Edit: I checked this in World Builder. If we have a city on the other island that has copper, that resource will be available in Sirius if there is contiguous culture between the two cities (even over an ocean tile). However, if the cities aren't connected by culture, resources available on Andromeda won't be accessible to Sirius or Canopus, and vice versa.

This was my concern. If we can't connect the two islands by culture relatively quickly, we will be at a disadvantage.

Soo it looks like we should settle on or near the f spot I placed to male sure our culture connects.

I agree that building a worker before the settler would normally be the better approach. I am worried however that it is too conservative an approach for this situation. Being assured we are able to connect cities on Andromeda to the home island might be worth a sub-optimal build order in the short term. I'm not completely convinced of this yet, and perhaps I am overstating the Amazon threat. I need to play test the builds in Sirius to see how quickly a settler could follow a worker.

I think worker before settler is too conservative as well. We want to stake our claim sooner rather than later -- especially if we are going to have a long NAP with them. Grab the good spots as soon as possible!

With regards to Worker first vs Settler first for claiming a spot on the mainland, definitely go Settler first. No use in having a Worker ready first only to have the intended site claimed before us by the AMAZONs. ;)

Here are some Graphs of information we can see of Persia:

If we can get our galley across, we have a trade network from our home island to the other island. Culture doesn't need to connect.

That wasn't the case in the test game. A coastal city I placed on the other island wasn't connected to Sirius unless the culture was connected. I think it's the ocean tile that messes things up. Our inability to trade resources with AMAZON shows this, I believe.

I still find this surprising. They should both be in the same plotgroup with or without a culture connection. That said, I think you're the second person to confirm it in a testgame, so I'm starting to believe it.

I've done this numerous times in my own games, I'm certain of it. I believe the reason we can't trade resources is that neither team can get a trade route with the other's cities. If I'm correct, once we settle on that island we should be able to trade resources with them (but they'd be getting a trade route with the city).

Could you upload the test game you used? Or link me to it?

Ah, crud. Never mind. I was looking for that test game and realized I was using an older save where we hadn't finished Sailing yet. With Sailing researched, they are connected.

From the espionage graph, I take it AMAZONs switched a civic or religion recently?

Yes:

In 2360 the Persians adopted Slavery according to the event log.

Makes sense. They may regret it now that we're talking them into getting Monarchy soon, although it will be a while until that arrives anyway.

Have they whipped yet? It's very easy to spot because it reduces their score during their own turn.

Yeah they may have whipped already or making a plan to whip something specific.

So, the turn-player(s) didn't make mention of it (can we remember to check the event logs please), but AMAZON claim that Monotheism has been founded in a distant land. Assuming it happened this turn (1960 BC), there were three teams with a score increase at the start of this turn:
* Ourselves (which we know already was for alphabet)
* Mavericks (India)
* Quatronia (Carthage)

Now the interesting thing is, both of the other teams have a religion already. They may have also been after organised religion, but either way it appears that one of them may be making a concerted effort to monopolise the religions. Having no religion ourselves, and with AMAZON having now missed their attempt, this is something we want to watch out for.

We coud use our 2nd GS to bulb Philosophy and (hopefully) pick up a religion, should we not get CoL (which is no big deal as far as I'm concerned). But we don't need CoL before then to bulb it.

Also, we may want to consider going Math>IW>Currency>Lit and getting the Great Lib to make that GS pop easier.

I actually really like this idea in principle (I'm still not certain of the specifics). We'd need Aesthetics too, but in the AMAZON Diplomacy thread, I just suggested grabbing the Marble site on Andromeda for the Great Library. Bulbing Philosophy is also something I've considered, but would delay an Academy. If we got Philosophy/Taoism with the bulb, the delay might be worth it. I'll have to run some tests.

We have met the Merlot!

I also wanted to ask about putting our Espionage points on Merlot now.
