Standby:
Jermain Defoe (Tottenham)
Richard Wright (Everton)
Matthew Upson (Birmingham)
Gareth Southgate (Middlesbrough)
Scott Parker (Chelsea)
Alan Smith (Leeds)

I would have thought that Matthew Upson should have been in the team rather than Ledley King...

Ian Walker's in i wonder why Nigel Martin didnt get in or even as the stand by goalkeeper as he was playing a lot of games for Everton towards the end of the season

Nigel Martyn, Matthew Upson, Gareth Southgate, Scott Parker and Alan Smith should all be in there, in place of: Ian Walker, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher, Nicky Butt and Darius Vassell.

Trapattoni will announce the team tomorrow :)

Scolari will also announce the squad tomorrow, but it's now certain that Vitor Baía will be there :goodjob: (he was never called in the past 2 years). We have a chance, after all... :)

Looking for that english squad, I see that only 2 players from Arsenal are there, and two defenders. Of course, it's not a novelty, but in a way it is sad for England that they cannot really take advantadge of the quality of football of the best team in the premiership. Others will, and we all know who...

I heard yesterday that Arjen Robben has recovered enough from his hamstring injury to play for the dutch team.

I don't like the England squad, it looks very normal and uninspiring, especially up front: Owen seems to be lacking motivation and has been going down hill since Beckham became captain, a role in which he's outrageously rubbish especially with respects to selfish play.

Vassell is only striker in the team with real penetrating potential but his record in the Premiership is only so-so, and none are fast enough or motivated enough for a full (field) length counter attack :(

Overall, I don't expect much from that team. It will be edge of the seat stuff for the supporters of opponent teams but only because England will be boxed into their own penalty area for ninety minutes of continuously parrying strikes.

I didn't think Vitor Baia was that highly rated...

Well, for my surprise Vitor Baía ended up not being called... But he would be very important not only because the usual goalkeeper (Ricardo) is having an abysmal season but also because of the moral boost his call would give to the rest of the players and to us fans. He gives defenders much more confidence and is the only goalkeeper capable of handling the pressure.

Portugal squad for Euro 2004:

Goalkeepers:
Ricardo (Sporting)
Quim (Sp. Braga)
Moreira (Benfica)

Defenders:
Paulo Ferreira (F.C. Porto)
Miguel (Benfica)
Fernando Couto (Lazio)
Jorge Andrade (Deportivo)
Ricardo Carvalho (F.C. Porto)
Beto (Sporting)
Nuno Valente (F.C. Porto)
Rui Jorge (Sporting)

Midfielders:
Costinha (F.C. Porto)
Petit (Benfica)
Tiago (Benfica)
Maniche (F.C. Porto)
Rui Costa (Milan)
Deco (F.C. Porto)
Luís Figo (Real Madrid)
Simão (Benfica)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)

Strikers:
Pauleta (PSG)
Nuno Gomes (Benfica)
Hélder Postiga (Tottenham)

What made you think Baía would get called anyway? There was not a single chance of it happening.

Interesting that he called Moreira after saying no one would play both in the U21 Euro and in the Euro 2004, but Moreira won't play in the Euro anyway. Also finally the man had some sense and brought Maniche to the team. It was either him or Tiago, but he called both. I don't think Tiago should be here. He's not fit and I don't think he'll bring anything to the team. I'd rather see Boa Morte in his place or even Hugo Viana.

Other than that, no surprises at all.

Is there a reason why he hasn't been called up at all? I don't believe he is a particularily good goalkeeper but I would have thought he was in the top 3 of Portugese keepers...

Nobody really knows. He's not a saviour, but based on merit alone he'd still have a spot.
It all must have started after the WC when he was to be one of the purged after the tournament ended. When Scolari came someone told him that Baía would be a problem (like he's never accept being benched and all that), which proved incorrect, because Baía never caused any problem to the team. But at some point the case was overhyped, and Scolari being the stubborn pr*ck he is, there was no turning back.
There were problems with other players, like Maniche, absent for almost a year, for unknown reasons.
What it seems is that Porto players seem to have to work much harder than others to get the call up. The best example is Ricardo Carvalho, who has been Portugal's best defender for two years and so far only played a few minutesd in the team. I'm not saying just because I'm a Porto fan. Scolari himself said it: "I'm not going to watch Porto's matches because it is too far away" or replying to a journalist asking about Baía, Carvalho or Maniche "You only say that because you're from Porto", "I'm from Lisbon actually", "Thank God you are then!"...

I guess it's part of his style. He has to be hated by someone and to have a war with someone (Romário in Brazil anyone?)...

Interesting so instead of being the national coach he secretly wants to manage Sporting or Benfica? Seems idiotic to ignore Porto because they are "too far away" considering that they have dominated Portugese football this year and are in the CL final...
