I think this misses the point of the question, because it's assuming that they're gaining political power, when the question was why they'd go somewhere where they won't have any.

isn't that just all hypothetical rambling? I mean how large is the eurosceptic faction in the EU parliament now? 20%? If they want to achieve anything they need to gain a lot more votes and if they're capable of doing that remains to be seen. The protest voter effect shouldn't be underestimated, and next time around the cool option for portest voterst might be something else entirely.

France especially has a bit a history of protest vote 'upsets', just think of the 2002 presidential elections.

MEPs certainly have power, but NI MEPs such as UKIP and FN don't. They're not going to be assigned any committee chairs or rapporteurships (they might get some deputy chairs if the other parties decide to stick with the proportionality principle and not block that), and their vote is going to be incapable of stopping any legislation. The most they could hope for is to influence reports, negotiations or final decisions, but they haven't exactly set themselves up as people to productively work with. I don't know what FN's goals are, but in the case of UKIP, I agree that the goal is almost certainly national politics. But then it'd be better to say that they're going to the European Parliament for publicity and a springboard, not directly for power.
