Should there be a United States of Europe?

Should Europe become the dominant force on the World stage? Should our great cultures unify? Should we all speak the same language, have a single capital, a unified government and 'One Europe, One Nation'.

Who is for and who is against? Would Americans welcome or fear such a force? What would be the political implications?

United States of Europe.......NO!

The world should unite..not just Europe. And I can't see either happening anytime soon.

Isnt english already going to become the first language of europe.

anyway who would lead such a country? where would the capital be this would cause enumerous arguments.
what type of government? one based on the england or america?
i dont think of europe combined they would becoem the dominat player in world potlitics. The U.S.A would still be top dog.
Why would america fear such a union such a stats would be allies of the U.S.A.

If this did happen wouldnt there be a dnager of nazis undening up in power?

i am absolutely against such a union. As i want britain to pull out of the e.u what is the chance of me wanting a union of all european countries?

I am all for a political federation of European nations. We have a historic and cultural motivation and right to play as significant a role on the world stage as any other power. But the Union should only handle what is necessary. Defence, foreign policy, free trade, economic cooperation and a coordinated judicial system. No single language, just a "business language" meaning that the EU administration should be handled in a single language, we should have Europeans speaking one language. Because our culture and history is what makes us great - we should unite in diversity.
Of course it should be an ally of the United States, we will still be a part of the Western World.

I dunno Comrade. I think Europe would be a good place to start. It also depends what you mean by a United Europe. Same currency? Same language? One Federal government? If so, Europe is almost there. Right now the EU has to undergo HEAVY reform, and once Turkey- and possibly Russia- are incorporated into its fold, it could challange the United States quite easily in every aspect besides military (which is a useless and barbaric entity anyways).

Yeah, and then we can boss the Americans around. When the next 10 members, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Malta.

We will have a must large population, army and economy, hense America fearing the European Union expansion. Then if Russia joins we will kick american butt

To avoid furious American reactions on the above post, I'd like to point out that it was probably just sarcasm pointed against the EU... :)

:D

Go ahead, knock yourselves over. Forming a single European entity will never happen, due to the ineptness of the mind-set which stays exclusively socialist and bureaucratic. But Europe will most likely get some other issues to ponder about in the near future, as it will most likely face some serious discontent about the European Union. The regulatory and authoritarian behavior of the European Union is altogether impeding the imaginary contemplation about 'uniting' Europe in a single federal government with the previously mentioned features.

And we all know your extensive expertise on the European Union, nixon... :p

...:D

I'm also all for a political federation of European states, but I think it should go a little further than what you imply. A union that unifies just the markets and foreign policy is no real union. The social standards should be the same everywhere as well. Furthermore every European should have the same rights and opportunities, at least not different based on his origin.

But based on that we should indeed "unite in diversity", because we have rich and diverse cultures, which is in my opinion something that should be preserved.

Davo, you're right that uniting the whole world would be better, but is that really an argument against uniting Europe?

Equal rights and opportunities? Yes.

Equalisation of the European economies? No.

Coordination of European economies? Yes.

I'm not in favour of some mutant version of the Soviet Union, if by "the same social standards" you mean that we should try, with government funding, to reach the same level everywhere. Uniformity is not an advantage, and we should rather try to make Europe prosper - not equalise.

No, that's not what I mean, I mean the social security laws as well as major taxes, otherwise the countries with a higher standard of living will be dragged down.

'One Europe, One Nation'
Europe will probably never be one nation, maybe one state in the far future.
Nation means the people have the same culture, religion... which is not the case. Ex chzechoslovakia - two nations, one state; South and North Korea - one nation, two states.
As far as I know there aren't many politicians striving to unite EU into a USE, but EU is gaining more and more power over the countries. The reason is that most countries gain on having similar politics and cooperation.
If we unite, we'll still be a part of the western world and USA will undoubtedly be our strongest ally, for economic reasons, but USA eg probably wont be able to sack a future Kyoto deal as easy as they did last time.
I doubt there will be a common language, since Germany and France wouldn't allow any other language than their own to be official, I think. English is the most common language though and I also think that everybody studies english in school, so most communication between the people of different countries is and would be in English.
Defence, foreign policy, free trade, economic cooperation and a coordinated judicial system.
I agree, and the rest can be handled within and by each state.:)
How come americans think we are about to collapse? A lot of people are against EU, but compared to how USA was united we're doing good:)

German bundesrepublik sounds better to me... :satan:

...but what is the purpose?

Why do you think they'd be dragged down?

No

That would only mean more suffering, it's to big difference between the people in Europe. Here in Sweden, where i live, it would probably result revolution if Sweden went into that state...

And also. Today we have almost nothing to say in politics. And i live in a country with 9 million. Think yourself trying chance anything in a country with almost 400 million persons...
