Events with Images?

Everyone that frequents the forums know of Fall Further. It's got it's entire own subforum. And those that doesn't visit the forum won't, obviously, see the posts in all the threads regardless. ;)

Setting preferences apart, everyone may know something exists, but not any recent changes or improvements. Just stating something relevant to the thread is not a reason to bash someone.

If someone says, "this mod has already done that" (s)he usually means "So it is doable and can be done in base FFH, too" and not "Hey, that mod is really cool, go and play it".

And, of course, I do think events with images will look cool, until we get used to it...

We all knew popups are doable, the death of a civ one has been around since vanilla FfH IIRC.

:sigh: I know I should just shut up... but since it's been said... I would like to second the motion that ""FF does this better" is not always a valid response to every suggestion made for FfH.

As anyone working on these projects will tell you, everytime you make a change, there is the possiblilty of an unforeseen result.

In other words, adding effects and new shiny things is not always for the best.

There are places where each mod or modmod or modmodmod excels above all the rest.... sometimes ideas incorporated in one system work in others... sometimes, not so much.

In short... I have stopped reading more than a few threads on the FfH boards because they quickly turned to "FF is better" instead of a discussion about FfH.

No one goes to the Civ boards and replies to every concern with "FfH does that much better" do they?

Alright.... I'm gonna shut up... though I'm sure I haven't been clear enough and will upset someone.... sorry in advance :(

I am very upset.

Seriously though, events with images would really enhance immersion. I remember going "omg WTH?? *drooool* " when I first saw what FF did.

Well, in this particular case it isn't what Fall Further did. The idea for Great Person mod came from Roamty's import of Gaurav, TheLopez, Dr. Elmer Jiggle, and Amra's work in Warlords. The quotes and images were slowly compiled from the community input, and the final format of placing the popups actually came from Fall from Heaven's design of a popup screen which is already used for Acheron, Orthus, and Leader Deaths.

Initial realease wasn't even for Fall Further (but hasn't been updated since I have been swamped), and the idea of expanding it to announce all Hero births was from momono75, either independantly or alarmingly quickly after I posted about finding how useful Kael's popup design was before I officially released the first version of Great Person Mod.

Since I work on Fall Further, I just happened to import the Great Person mod very quickly into our project over there, and made some significant enhancements which required DLL work to pull off (like including the turn number, and in generally making the turn number appear in numerous locations where it is useful to know, and including the name of the unit spawned and who it spawned for. Though I think those last 2 were python only... can't remember).

So anyway... It is something designed by the FfH community that FF members happened to help with here and there, and immediately swiped. ;)

FF has done that, is not the same as FF does this better.

And, again, there are things which would like to be included in FFH but they will never be. FF can have or include such things. It is in development stage, and not in Fixed Features stage(like FFH).

As anyone working on these projects will tell you, everytime you make a change, there is the possiblilty of an unforeseen result.

Again, it is not, "doing it better", is just "doing it a specific way", and the poster may seek this "specific way".

Nobody should get upset when you express your thoughts about something. It is the personal attacks that get most people upset. It is a good thing you post this, so that there is a chance to clear a misconception.

As Xien said, FF incorporates many other mods into its design, making it the "ultimate modmod" for FFH2. This way, mods that would otherwise have gone out of date due to inability of maintenance and update by the original author, can be preserved and enjoyed...

As you already pointed out "more stuff is not always better stuff", but when you are developing something, you add as much as is desirable. When you pass to the next phase, you keep the ones that you like most and fix the instability issues etc. It is the procedure FFH went through, and FF is going through, now.

If you take a closer look at the FFH board posts, you will see that the people mentioning "the Orbi mod mod" or the "FF mod mod" does this that you want FFH to have, are, usually, the people playing the mod and not the people developing the mod, which does say something. Don't you think?

I'm a bit puzzled. Don't the official FfH2 scenarios already have images in the event? I'm pretty sure I copied that once in my scenario.

FF has done that, is not the same as FF does this better.

You're right... this thread is NOT the appropriate place for this to have come up.... but it's where it happened.

I do not intend to attack or smear any mention of other modmods, sometimes they do have GREAT ideas and additions.

And additionally I do NOT wish to personally attack anyone... which is why i didn't point out specific times where I have felt the FF comments were unnecessary and unhelpful.

In general... I feel that since FfH is produced FREE of CHARGE to players.... and updated and improved EVERY WEEK also free of charge, I personally feel for Kael and Co when posters seem not to recognize this fact in their criticisms.

Constructive criticism is fine.... healthy debate is AWESOME... and sometimes even players have inspired ideas.... sometimes the choice of words can be a tad aggressive though (and not in a "English-is-not-my-native-language-so-I-may-make-mistakes" way)

I love this mod.... and if it stopped changing and improving today.... I would still play it for a few more years before I felt like I had seen all I could see in Erebus....

So I guess my overall message would be/should have been:

Let's just all play nice and enjoy this amazing (albeit fantasy) world we've been given! ;)

Events with images would be awesome, especially events who require a serious decision. It would be cool to have an option who quadruples the number of events... :)

Also, images of destruction would appear when AC rises. And when it hits 100, we get a whole cinematic with Apocalypse music...

yea! because until then, we gonna be soooo popular, that we have our own cg movie studio ;)

What about this thread? I'm surprised it is abandoned! That idea was cool about the important events like the rising of armaggedon. I remember in the first versions that an image illustrated the : "hear me mortals..." popup.
And for the movie studio, make a request for donation, FFH is so popular that i'm sure you will have enough money to get the help of Spielberg. ;)

I would like to see the constellations added to the constellation pop-up events. Would give a very nice visual in something that can be as important as giving free golden ages.

Yeah, that would be amusing!! You know perhaps a popup with "The Dragon Constellation" or a popup with "The Great Tree" visible in the night sky.

For a really fancy effect -can this be done? we do have clouds moving if we zoom out far enough - a light and sound show in the sky for a Constellation event!

I'd think also that sound accompaniment to casting of Worldspells would be cool; when I cast March of the Trees, it'd be cool to hear some deep Treebeard voice announcing "We MARCH!" or if a distant civ casts "For the Horde" perhaps a barbarian warcry announcing their answer to the call!
