Which is a hybrid. My freshman bio teacher mentioned some "ring of evolution" to start off the chain, where several organisms had essentially mixed and matched pieces before tehy got to the point at which RNA codes became so complicated and individualized to certain groups that early speciation occured. I sadly do not have the notes on this from years ago, but I'll try to dig up some links to post.

Actually, I'm taking the opposite stance on Chandrasekhar here: what is the probability one organism magically has everything it needs to survive? Very low. What is the probability a bunch of different components developed, and then one aggressive proto-organism assimilated them all? Higher, but not by much.

The thing is, something like this becomes probable as time goes on. It actually becomes improbable for an improbable event not to occur given enough trials. If something is possible, it will likely happen at some point. That's the way the world works.

Some random thing from Quantum Mechanics:

Anything that is not forbidden, is compulsory.

Same goes with life. It is not forbidden, and with enough time, it will develop.

Right, so if we're descended from a hybrid, then we are all descended from one organism. It would have replicated itself to the point that it would crowd out all of those other contemporary organisms.

Yep. So the possibility of multiple first life forms is still very real.

So were we arguing different views of the same point?

Because I was arguing that point as well, just adding on that a possibility of more than one first cell existed.

We are all arguing the same thing. We all have about the same knowledge on this issue, it appears. It's just fun to debate whether or not a hybrid organism counts as one organism for the purposes of tracing lineage or the summation of multiple ones.

My plan is to develop an FTL starship, boost out 4 billion light years, and pull out a REALLY big telescope. Then we can look at the proto-soup and end this "one organism, or multiple" fiasco.

Except that you'd have to travel faster than the speed of light to do so... now, if you asked some distant aliens if they have some old Earthling single-celled organism sex tapes, we might be in business. (That's single cell, not single celebrity.)

dang, cliked on the wrong poll option..sign me up for evolution; I beleive...!
