EXIII Reborn - OCC CONQUEST Challenge

In that case, I don't think its next to the coast. I have made mistakes often thinking that those tiles would give me a port city but I was wrong.

But moving to the hill or the goody hut will give us a coastal city. I recomend the hill (better defense).

If there is an coastal tile in your initial 1-tile radius that is not part of a freshwater lake, you can build a harbour. I've never seen an exception to this rule.

This means, if there is a coast tile in your 1-tile radius that is not part of a lake, you're on the coast. Hence, if you build where you are, you will be on the coast, and able to eventually build ships. If you're having trouble seeing where the tiles begin and end (and hence which tiles are coast tiles and which are shoreline) you can always turn on grid lines (ctrl-G) to spot the difference.

If you're paranoid, here's a quick test. Save the game before you build your city, then quickly research Bronze working as fast as you can, and see if you can build the Colossus. If so, you're on the coast; reload your save and start for real. Be sure not to scout during that time so as to minimize any foreknowledge you might get.

Zed-F, I know from personal experience that your quote is wrong. I've had many cities with coastal tiles within a one-tile radius, but i couldn't build harbors/ships. I think I'll just look for a better position...

Zed-F, I would have to agree with Ex here also. Like I said in my above post from personal experience a city built on that square will not be a coastal one.

The solution is that we move north on to the hill and build there.

You guys sure it wasn't on a lake?

Well, I've built cities in locations like that before, and been able to build harbours. There may be some other variables involved too, like whether there are hills/mountains on both squares between you and the ocean. Sometimes that seems to have an effect on ability to irrigate, so it may have an effect in this case as well.

Try my simple test and see whether, for this case, you can build the Colossus or not. If so, go ahead and start there.

well... I started a new game. We got a awesome starting locale (3 furs +cows). I started out by whipping out 3 warriors, the first one scouted the east. Lo and behold, he found the americans AND the Zulu no less than 5 tiles away. I make some profitable trades with the americans, and then send in my 3 warriors to strike.

Warrior #1 - killed, but puts american warrior to 2hp @ veteran status.

Warrior #2 - killed, but puts american warrior to 1hp.

Warrior #3 - destroys american worker.

And the Americans are gone!!! And then, the game crashes!!!!

I've tried to replay that last turn several times, but it always crashes. NO idea whats wrong. Maybe someone else should get this started, and I'll just be another player.

Like I said, I think someone else should get this going, civ3 really doesn't like my computer. I'll still play, but I guess I wasn't meant to kick it off... :(

You know Ex, this has been your second problem with Civ lately (the iffy save for GG1)...maybe you should reinstall?

Bah... my comp sucks and I've reinstalled, oh, 5-6 times. It's slow and old, and I need a new one, but alas, I'm poor. No biggy, the problems usually are only every now and then, these are just 2 coincidences.

Tell you what, I'm bored and there aren't any games for me to play tonight (how many do I need to join people?!?)...

I'll start it.

I'll play 15 turns, then you can take the next 15 turns, and the rotation can continue as specified.

Turn 0 -- 4000 BC
Ok, I had to go with 80% water, because I just couldn't get a coastal spot (this also reduces the space for the AI :) ). Starting position is good, we're on a lake so we can grow to 12, we're on the coast so we can build boats, two grapes nearby so we have one for ourself and one for trade, and a good variety of squares.

Turn 1 -- 3950 BC
Delhi is founded on grapes (we have two additional nearby). Warrior ordered. Worker goes to Mine grapes.
We start Bronze Working

Turn 2 -- 3900 BC
Worker begins Mine

Turn 6 -- 3700
Warrior done, order up another--he spies Goody Hut.

Turn 8 -- 3600 BC
Worker completes Mine, begins Road
The Aryan Village is deserted

Turn 10 -- 3500 BC
Warrior done, order up another
Iroquois spotted, I chat up Hi
They give us 35 Gold and Pottery for Alphabet. I accept.

Turn 11 -- 3450 BC
Our borders expand...hooray for them!

Turn 12 -- 3400 BC
We get Bronze Working, I order up Iron Working
Worker begins Mine

Turn 13 -- 3350 BC
Delhi completes Warrior, I order up Spearman for defense.
I spy a red border across the bay from us...Romans?

Turn 14 -- 3300 BC
Warrior spies Goody Hut

Turn 15 -- 3250 BC
I have disturbed the Mongols...good luck Ex! :D
I have found Rome. Two warriors are heading there...Ex, you may want to do your stuff...

Here's the pic:

And here's the save:

We're looking good on the Commerce side (all the water and grapes around us), so we may have a better than half chance of winning this :)

The last EX game I sign up for.

Drop me from this one.
This is absurd.

I played a couple of turns to see what it was like (I've never played an SG. I was just directed here). You have quite the interesting predicament though, to say the least. It should be quite fun.

Or, you could start a new thread with it to kick it off because this game seems enjoyable. What a good start compared to other succession games in this forum ^_~.

man, Lee, you are a hard a**.

Despite, I'll play the next 10 if the others are still hanging around... might be a good idea to start a new thread ChrTh, just copy everything you posted for the new game. This is getting to cluttered up and bothered.

hehe, forgot about that one . Yea, I think that one bit the big one... it's safe to say it's a long over, unless you really want to keep it going.

Well, sorry if I came off strong, but the above comment on EX4 sounded like you didn't care about the game you started. That really doesn't sit well with me. In my 20+ LK games I have never been the one to abandon.
