Experiment 626's Japanese Pre-Game Thread

I think I've already spammed Experiment626's thread too much as it is. Sorry.
Nonsense.

Just because some of us (you included, as of this post :p ) have more posts than Fearless Leader does in his own thread is no reason to consider that spamming.

Right now this is a sort of reunion thread, as the survivors from the first game gather round the campfire and share our war stories about the civ that got away.

'Yeah, by cracky, it was a Demi-God game, down to just me and old Shaka; him with tanks and over half the world and me with just my five cities and a stockpile of nukes. O' course old Shaka never could put two and two together and make four and I guess that explains why he....'

So stick around. You'll fit in.

Just so everybody understands, I only get 1 day off per week (none this week, as a matter of fact), so all of you with your fancy-schmantzy jobs that give you 2 days off per week have a lot more free time on your hands than I do.

I work in a restaurant, so Fri, Sat, and Sun, I'm extremely busy, and on Monday, I work my shift as best I can, and then collapse when I get home.

@tR1cKy: Whoops! Sorry about that. Well, what's done is done. Have you read my first Solo TDG thread yet? It's located here.

House rules draft looks good to me. Getting early contacts is a skill worth
reinforcing; due to RL issues, our fearless leader has had a long dry spell
between game starts. It will come back to him, soon enough.

No need for Always War, in this game. One of my challenges (and perhaps
Fearless Leader's, as well) is knowing when I'm ready to go to war.
I try to balance acting quickly (before the AI expects it/prepares for it)
and bringing sufficient force to finish the job. I can't count the times
I have said to myself, "Don't send a boy to do a man's job" as the AI defenders
fend off my SOH (Stack of Heck).

That explains it.

Yes, that does make it difficult to play and post with only one day off during the week.

My History
I ran a route for Frito-Lay here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for 11 years, until 1999. It always seemed to take 6 days to do the route. Others could get done in 5 but it took me 6. I was a bit slower (due to asthma), but had a busy route, too. In the summer time Saturdays could take 15 hours to finish, 18 hours on the last Saturday of the period, when our totals had to transmitted to sales. Oh, and the trucks were not insulated, either (envirnoment-friendly is how I describe them), so a hot day outside meant a hotter day in the truck, even with a breeze and both doors open. I kept my sales up and my stales (out of date, busted bags, etc) down. I did a good job.

During those days when I had some free time I would just zone out with Civ2, staying at Chieftain and playing game after game with no real goal in mind.

Then I got a chance to be a computer programmer, took it, got two days off a week (and holidays, too!), got Civ 3 Gold (vanilla and PTW) for Christmas one year and found this site.

Expirement 626
And you're still going to do a TDG with your schedule?

:salute:

Expirement? I know that I'll expire some day, but hopefully not now.

And yes, at least during the initial expansion phase, it will be a TDG. After that, who knows?

More details about the game:

Standard Size Map (though maybe I should go for a Large Map if the  HoF table isn't full. That way I don't have a deadline of 1745 A.D.). What do you good people think?

As mentioned, Pangaea, Trying for a Conquest Victory.

I'll be the Japanese. The A.I.'s will be Portugal, Ottomans, Iroquois, and Celts. If I do go with a Large map, who should the other 2 A.I.'s be?

I'll be 'programming' MapFinder with the RuleSet that gmaharriet provided in order to have a Settler Factory Capitol city. I will have it generate and save 4 such starts, check with the :bowdown:HoF 4000BC utility to ensure that each is :bowdown:HoF-compliant, and post the pics here, so the Senseis around here can point out which one would the best start.

More later! Good Night!

Depends on your confidence level. Not trying to be demeening :pat: or presumtive, but on regent with pangea landmass you should be able to dust off 4 AI by 1600AD or sooner. While large means a guaranteed slot, it will also take longer and increases the possibility your pangea will have 1or 2 islands that may have AI on them, thus requiring a navy. But it's up to you. For a good date, pangea is quicker, but for more action, and therefore "training" continents or archepelago might be better. But I think you can safely stay with pangea, this time.

I'll be the Japanese. The A.I.'s will be Portugal, Ottomans, Iroquois, and Celts. If I do go with a Large map, who should the other 2 A.I.'s be?

Interesting choices. Why did you pick them?

If you need to more victims AI, then try England and Byzantines, or America, or even Scandinavia:viking: .

Please don't take Rome, Greece, Carthage, Dutch, or France as opponents, they have strong defensive UUs and that would favor them, nothing you couldn't handle, just why make it harder. One of the most essential "non playing" game skills when playing games for the HoF is to make it as easy as possible to get a good date. That's why you have things like mapfinder and try to pick a certain settings and so on; to facilitate a quick victory for a good date. It's a skill all to itself, even before turn 1 begins.

I'm looking forward to some start up screens. :trouble:

From the thread 'Experiment 626's Solo TDG', page 30 post #581, (by Marsden himself no less:

Japan is fun. They aren't good for early growth or quick dates, but they are fun to play. Pangea is good, and usually is better for and early date, but continents are fun too. Samurai are cool. Japan has always been a personal favorite to play, but I don't use them very often anymore because the they don't have attributes that help get good dates for the HoF.

Hair Mestil Plesident!

The last sentence caught my attention. ' . . . they don't have attributes that help get good dates for the HoF.' Would playing as Japan be a mistake? What would be a good choice for a fast date for the  HoF?

I think he is referring to your opponents.

In the quote, I think what he means is that the Japanese UU comes a bit late to be part of an early game Ancient Age killing machine.

However, on the Regent Conquest Standard Map Size table, Japan holds spot #8, winning in 1510 AD.

On the Regent Conquest Large Map Size table, only 4 slots are taken. In fact, the entire Conquest Large Map tables are sparsely populated, so if you want to move up to Monarch and have your first Monarch attempt entered into the Hall of Fame, you can do it on a Large map!

Note that the HoF deals with map size, not map type. Huge pangea counts the same as huge archipelago.

A few good choices for a fast finish conquest game are: Egypt, Celts, Iroquois, and Persia. Although Persia isn't great. Their UU is strong but slow. I think they're good choices, I'd like to see you beat on the Celts and Iroquois.

As to attribues. Religous is borderline useless, at least for HoF play. It's nice having the quick anarchy, but that's about it. For culture, scientific is much better, normally. The exception to this is 100k. Militaristic is ok, but it's not great, cheap barracks are even cheaper, units promote faster, but everyone's units promote. It's not as if you actually get better units, they just might be a little better quicker. Good HoF attributes are Agricultural, Industrious, and Commercial, with Scientific and sometimes Seafaring. The others are ok, but not optimal. Expansionist can be great for super fast research in the ancient age, but only on lower levels.

So picking your civ is a good thing to do, but not required. Check the civs used on the HoF statistics page, there are definite prefrences amoungst HoF players.

Sorry for the delay in posting. I've worked my butt off this week, and I'm extremely tired. I have 2 of the proposed 4 saves (courtesy of MapFinder) so far. My RuleSet is what gmaharriet suggested but I also added some lines. The utility is having a hard time finding 'Acceptable Maps'.

2 down, 2 to go . . .

Good night!

Take heart, True Believers! MapFinder has found me the other 2 maps!

I swear on what's left of my sanity, I will post the screenies on Thursday. I won't post the saves because I don't want someone to play one of the saves and tell me what's where.

It's after 2:00 AM now. Sleep tight, everybody!

Firstly, some information:

Here is the RuleSet that I used for MapFinder:
  1. AND Rivers>3
  2. AND Food Bonus>1
  3. AND Bonus Grassland>2
  4. AND Forest>0
  5. AND Marsh=0
  6. AND Jungle=0
  7. AND Desert=0
  8. AND Flood Plains=0
  9. AND Tundra=0
  10. AND Coast=0
  11. AND Hill<2
  12. AND Mountain=0

Secondly, without further ado-whacka-doo, some SCREENIES! All screenies resized to save bandwidth . . .

I saw SAVE #1, and almost fell off my chair! However, I'm sure that you Senseis will have your own opinions. So tell me, what are the good (and bad) points of each save? Which Save should I use?

Let the Spirited Discourse begin! :D
