Experiment 626's Solo TDG

With much trepidation about General AutomatedTeller’s loyalties, I play the next Set of Turns.

This is out of character. It's so hot here where I live, I'm beginning to think that the planet has shifted, and is now in downtown Hades. :Whew:

Edit: I think this training day thread is turning into a "Blazing Civ Theater 3000"

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Let me just take a moment to thank all of you for entering into the spirit of this thread and playing along, and a special thank you goes to AutomatedTeller for being such a good sport about the whole thing.

It doesn't get him off the hook, mind you. :crazyeye:

@Special Agent vorlon_mi and Major Tribute: I loved your mini-stories!

As always, your thoughts, suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated. :worship:

Doesn't it feel good to win? And you did it your self on regent. :salute:

Good job on research. I trust you're building at least a few privateers, although with combustion, we get destroyers! Maybe a few "naval incidents" would be in order to teach the Arabs a lesson. Just because you send their navy to the bottom doesn't mean you can't still trade with them.

My thoughts exactly, we need to rule the seas now and make sure they are unable to send any units our way!

Congrats on taking the coninent. You have done well.

Yes Blazing Civ that is a great name for what this has become!:mischief:

General AutomatedTeller sits in his new bunker and frets.

"The President no longer trusts me. He thinks I'm off, giving away our secrets to the French or Arabians, while I'm just moving! I live right outside our great city of Boston..."

He paces restlessly, waiting for the techs to hook up his communication at home. " I need to look at the arabians and french so I can advise our glorious president! Maybe I can recommend a candygram gambit. Perhaps we can slow the Arabian navy by putting up a tollbooth on the high seas. Or perhaps we can set a teutonic **** on our enemies. man, I shouldn't have eaten so many beans..."

He then goes to the theater, just in time to see "Blazing Civ" on the big screen. "I wonder how it ends?"

General Automated Teller sure was a fast one. Major Tribute could barely remain stealthily hidden and follow the General at the rate he was going. His 'ship' had already 'docked' outside of Boston, and the General seemed to be doing a lot of muttering. He also was shaking his head. A lot.

Major Tribute pondered what it would be like if General Automated Teller's head had fallen off, when the General escaped from view. The young boy looked around frantically and noticed a sign outside one of the brothels: Now Playing... BLAZING CIV.

"Blazing Civ?" Major Tribute said to himself, "Oh dear.... Most inappropriate." He gazed silently at the building and sighed. Then, suddenly, eyes lighting up, Major Tribute ran through the outskirts screaming "The general's having PRE-MARITAL HANKY PANKY!!! PRE-MARITAL HANKY PANKY!!!"

Passerby stared. Major Tribute didn't care; he was used to this. Stopping, he gasped for breath. "I said-"

Everyone around him yelled. "WE HEARD YOU!"

(There are references to a certain comic writer's work.)

We need Randolf Scott!

Admiral Eltrai is very relieved that we have found General AT and he is with us.

We never doubted you General, really we never did. honest....

<in character>
Citizen Vorlon entered the outer office, trying to nerve himself up
to deliver his information. Miss Stein sat behind the desk, filing her nails.
She held up one hand and looked at it, then gently blew on the nails to
clear away the dust.

"Umm, errm, <cough>" Vorlon began, shifting from foot to foot.

"Yes?" she asked, looking up quickly, and the American fur coat
dropped off her shoulders.

"I, aah, have some information for the President", Vorlon went on,
mouth feeling very dry.

"Oh, Pooky can't see anyone right now. He's engaged in some *very*
important discussions in the hot tub...oh, I mean, his private office."

"But it concerns General Automated Teller. I've found some things
that will restore the President's confidence in him. It's important!"

"I'm sure that it might seem very important to you, but after all those
*nasty* battles with those *pesky* Koryans and May-eans..."

"Umm, that's Koreans and Maya"

"What EVER! It's not like they matter anymore, right?" Miss Stein tittered.
"Oooooh. Anyway, Pooky is under *so* much stress that he needs me to focus
on his relaxation _constantly_. You'll just have to come back later."

Beads of sweat crossed Vorlon's forehead. "May I leave him a message of some kind?"

"If you must," she sniffed, passing Vorlon a sheet of paper and pen,
then going back to her nails.

Vorlon wrote quickly. There had been a revolution, back in 290BC,
when the despotic rule of Experiment 625 had been overthrown in favor
of the kind benevolent rule of Experiment 626's republic.
One of General Teller's ancestors, Manual Teller, had played a key role
in ensuring the success of the future republic.

Another distant relative, Automatic Clerker, had lived in NYC in those
early years, along Lexington Park. Disease was rampant, and many people
who survived had told horrific tales. Clerker had been injured when
a carriage crashed near the park. Some witnesses reported that the horse
which was pulling the carriage had been struck across its face by a large,
uncouth man/beast known only as "Mongo", but those tales were unconfirmed.

Vorlon folded the paper, and looked up again at Miss Stein.
"Please give this to the President," he asked earnestly.
"Oh, all right," she sighed, folding the paper again, and tucking it
into her blouse.

Gulping, Vorlon stammered, "I'll, just, see myself out."

<out of character>

Now, some game advice from *way* back in the thread....

Marsden said:
Well, you should decide now, not later, what you're building, a spaceship or the UN. If your going for space than don't worry about anybody's (AI) feelings, but if you want the diplomatic win, do not attack, cheat, or otherwise upset your imbecile opponents or they won't like you and won't vote for you.

There are only 3 Civs left, so, if you are still considering the UN vote,
you will want to include that in your war plans. If you want to build
the spaceship, then you just focus on science, and build a navy
to repel any invaders.

Alright now, I can clear up this little problem. Apparently General Automated Teller has a duplicate person, a doppleganger, out there name Hedy.. HedLy Lamar. This person likes the notion of being more important that he actually is and dressing up in general's clothing, what a sicko. He has been dealt with accordingly, being made the new ambassador to Arabia. And I only let this go on as long as it did because General Teller blamed me for selling something to France cheap.

Who will u attack france or arabia

Since Arabia will probably declare on me before France will, I'll do the old 'Let's you and him fight' strategy outlined in a previous post. I'll declare on Arabia, and sign an MPP with France. I'll take New Damascus, and then, do nothing else for the rest of the war.

Then, I'll declare on France, and sign an MPP with Arabia. I'll take New Rheims, and then do nothing for the rest of the war.

Arabia and France will be at each other's throats for at least 20 turns while I assume 100% control of my continent, and research my way to victory.

Tech-wise, I'm making a beeline for The Internet, baby! It'll put a Research Lab in every city on the continent, and should trigger my Golden Age. This is going to be so sweet!

I might play tomorrow night. I'm not sure . . .

Just don't attack first, or the MPP won't work. Let the enemy enter your territory, and then when your partner in the MPP joins in the war you can attack without worry.

Also, SETI will trigger the golden age, too.

Good to know, but I'm definitely heading for The Internet. Then, maybe SETI.

I didn't play a Set of Turns tonight. I was at work for 11 hours today, and I'm just not in the mood. Sorry! :(

I will address all of your findings regarding General AutomatedTeller's loyalty soon. I have a movie to watch to give me inspiration.

I'm going to  now.

Good night, all.

Wow! Two whole days without anybody posting.

I realize that this is a ways away, but what would be the proper procedure for utilizing my Golden Age properly? I don't want to blow it now.

A scary thought just crossed my mind: What if Arabia gains access to Nukes before I launch? I might not win this game after all. I'll just have to make sure that I do launch before that happens.

I will play Tuesday if my boss 'allows' me to have the day off.

Later!

Arabia is *not* going to get nukes before you launch.

They are behind you in tech.

Getting your GA will

A) boost your research by a considerable amount, which will help you blow through MT techs.
B) Help you build SS parts.

Basically, in your GA, build a lot of stuff and get 4 turn research on everything you can.

Your GA will increase your productivity, esp. your commerce, which
leads to more cash and more science. What to do with that cash?
- Watch your science slider each turn, and consider lowering it if
the turns-to-discovery does not change. This should minimize the beakers
that are wasted on overruns.
- I'm always tempted to cash-rush, or partial cash-rush buildings.
You know, switch production to a settler, hurry production, then switch
to a library, and hurry that. But, that's because I'm still a builder at heart,
and your TDG is intended to let you flex different muscles.
- Your cavalry will not upgrade, but your tanks will. Consider switching
some cities to building tanks, and disbanding some regular cavs (if you
have any) to speed their production. A quick-response force of tanks,
and later, modern armor, will repel any wimpy invasions that Arabia
might land on your shores. But, save the gold for the upgrade from
tanks to MA.

Wonders: You should do some planning for the pre-build for Apollo,
and watch the wonder screen to see if either France or Arabia are building
the Manhattan Project. If one of them starts it, use some of your gold
to investigate the city, and gauge how many turns it will be. Sometimes
the AI makes a very stupid choice for the wonder city, and the wonder
won't be completed for 50-75 turns. You should not build it either,
since you have no intention of using nukes, and you don't want to make it any easier
for the AI to build them.

You should consider building the UN yourself, from a different pre-build,
just to ensure that neither Arabia or France builds it. Don't hold an
election -- choose the "Not Now" option in the popup window -- to let you focus
on your space program.

[Edited for some clarity in the last few sentences]

As you discover the techs that enable building different SS parts,
they seem to trickle in, scattered at the top, middle, and bottom
of the tech tree. There are 10 parts, as you probably know,
but I'm usually only building 2 or 3 at a time. Why? I haven't discovered
the tech for the next part(s), and the previous parts are finishing in
my core cities.
So, one plan might be to identify your 3 or 4 best shield-producing
cities, and build factories there. Then use a palace (or airport, or even
colosseum or bank) as a prebuild for the different parts. You can even use
a great wonder, like Manhattan; just don't actually complete it.
Great wonders can be switched to SS parts, as long as there are
no "tainted" shields -- from disbanding units or chopping forests.
Regular city improvements fall under the same restrictions; if you're going
to chop some trees near NYC or Philly, be sure to do it while building
the factories, not while pre-building Apollo or a SS part.

Build some modern ships in your coastal cities, and consider parking
some just outside the AI borders, across the shortest ocean routes
between the continents. The AI will always look for (what it considers)
your least-well defended city, but it hates long ocean routes.
Since each remaining AI civ has one city on your landmass (for now :mischief: ), you can probably park some boats near those cities
and then follow them home, to scout the route.
