F^4 What does your spouse think of you playing civ? What does (s)he do while U play?

Lots of married guys here..all with the same problem with the wife and kids as me! Good to see I am not alone.

I pretty much am resorted to playing starting around 11:00pm/midnight until I can't stay awake anymore (typically 2am..maybe 3am on the weekends). This is after the little ones and the wife have gone to bed.

I also get to sneak in some time every thursday at 10:00pm when the wife sits in front of the TV to watch ER....and does not want to be distracted by my presence!

I can understand this one completely.

You been to my house have you. The only problem I have is the nudge she gives me at 6:00am or the fact that my little one doesn't sleep past 6:30 am ever. Being able to sleep to 8:00 would be a dream after going to bed at 3:00am on Friday.

"You really need to get more sleep"

"That's just another addictive behavior"

Mildly tolerates it. Thinks I should be doing more things around the house--as if taking care of the two yearold while she is on bedrest isn't enough...

My playing time is much like hotrods--after daughter is in bed and usually up until too late in the morning.

Sounds like you and Pebbles have another one on the way!

Good luck!

Trying to convince my wife we need another baby, she is not buying it not yet anyway ;)

My wife used to complain that civ took away from her time on the computer.
(you know- chat rooms and bejeweled  )

My solution, buy her her own pc and a router to share the net.

Can't quite convince her to install civ on hers though:mischief:

For those of you who missed my brilliant post in the 'Real Life' thread:

Yep - I play games while the misses watches those compelling docu-drama shows.

If I were producing one of those: OK, this guy is a looser, he screws up, he gets what he deserves - end of story.

How it gets made: Poor guy is a victum - feel sorry for him. Did we mention he brought it on himself? Oh, we almost forgot - he left a trail of destruction on the way down. Gosh, maybe you shouldn't feel sorry for him at all.

My wife has her own hobbies on the computer, including AcroChallenge, Heroes of M&M, and, of course, all the time-wasters at the assorted online game sites. We both have our own computers in the front room (where most people would have a sitting room right by the front door). The kids (6 and 8) also have their own computers. Like scubagtr I have a nice HDTV home theater in the living room that gets used MUCH lesss than the tv in the computer room. Ah well :)

...or you have been to MY house! My little one sleeps till about 7:00am..so I get a half hour on you! ;) Nothing like getting started on the 'honey do' list first thing saturday morning....:cringe:

I travel alot so I usually play on the road, sometimes taking two weeks off at a time. If I'm home and playing, it is when she and our son are asleep! I don't think she has much tolerance for civ with my compulsive behavioral tendencies!!!

Me too  :D  depending of my mood

My wife does not really play computer games and doesnt really understand my fascination with them. However, she does tolerrate me playing endlessly pretty well as long as I dont let too much other work pile up. Now that we have a 8 month old baby my lack of free time will probably prohibit me from ever being a great Civ player.

Of course recently my son got into my computer area of the house and started to eat the manual for CivIII... I figure if he can digest that manual at his age we might have another great Civ player on our hands in a couple of years.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

A year or so ago I was addicted to counterstrike, and my girlfriend used to make a big effort to distract me from my games. Amazing how crap your aim can get when distracted.....

Of course now we have a 5 month old son, she just dumps him on my knee when he wakes up from his naps. Then I get reminded about the "to do" list....

In fact she doesn't really mind my game playing in moderation. She says that at least she knows where I am..! She also used to cane me at Quake 3 until she got bored of it.

I didn't want to speculate on the answer to this question. Therefore, I asked my wife. She said she thought it was great that I had this addiction because it kept me out of her hair and kept my brain active.

Won't she be surprised when I play it even more now!

Boyfriend, not husband, but

- 'Don't play too long', followed by a semi-worried look
- 'What are those things that look like mushrooms?', followed by a slightly baffled look
- 'Come over here and be social', followed by a lecherous look and gratuitous groping

We don't live together, so I don't play civ much when he's here, but he has been witness to the odd marathon session, usually while he's similarly absorbed watching a golf tournament or puttering around in the kitchen.

Oh yes, I got that too :)

Maybe instead of 'goody huts' they should be called mushrooms. There are poison mushrooms (barbarians), magic mushrooms of knowledge (give you a tech), mushrooms with little friendly dwarves living in them (settler), and so forth :)

Not Married, but My Girlfriend said she'd rather have me sitting here playing for hours than be out drinking with my friends;)

My wife will usually start glazing over in front of the TV. That's my signal to slowly, quietly, slink off to the office, and fire up Civ!! She'll come to a little later, come by and say 'Time for Bed', to which I'll reply 'Okay, just after I finish this turn and save'. Several turns later she comes back down, with this glaring look in her eye  ... Eventually, I head up.

The only time I really push it is the last day of the month. Gotta get the game done to submit!! [dance]

Don't worry Cracker, I haven't mentioned your name yet so there's still a town or two you can visit without a disguise.

She is usually VERY unimpressed. I can generally only play after the two kids (8 & 4 years old) are in bed, various household jobs done and so on.

That, along with the compulsion to play "... just a few more turns" or ".. .until I finish XXX" or whatever, means that even with the best intentions of definitely turning the thing off after an hour, two or three hours can easily go by ... you all know what I mean, don't you ?

Then I get sarcastic comments like "you listen to your military adviser more than you listen to me" or "Why doesn't your domestic adviser recommend that you've had enough and that you should go to bed ! NOW !"

Sadly she just has no idea of just how vitally important it is for me stay up late to manage foreign affairs, encourage culture and learning while stimulating the economy, and at the same time defend our borders and to vigorously wage ruthless war when necessary.

But strangely enough she loves me nonetheless. Perhaps my saving grace is her pursuit of quilting, papercraft, cardmaking etc. etc., which have meant that I have not seen the surface of our dining room table for months. Seems that there's more than one addict in our family !
