But where do I extract it to?

anywhere - the zip file contains a .exe which is the actual installer - that will automatically go to the installfolder of bts

I don't exactly know where anywhere is, lol. I did my first extraction ever last night to download RFC RAND. That's why I am patching now.
Do I even have to extract it in general, or is the game patched without extracting at all?
BTW, what is the .exe?

Should I have Civilization 4 before Installing Civilization 4 Beyond The Sword?
or like Civilization 4 Colonization does not require Ciivilization 4?

i wanna play the civ4btsv3.17 and at the end of installing the patch, when i enter the game, the cd or dvd of the game is required.
is necessary a crack to play this patch version of the game?

my civilization game was downloaded and the patch was downloaded from the firaxis site

you need to download the patch from the vendor who sold you the download version - the patch that Firaxis provides will not work.

I'm sorry if this is a repeat but I really want to play BtS. I have all the "Required System Requirments" and I have Civ IV and Warlords. I have tried what BumpNsubz has suggested and it tells me that I am current on installations. I get the problem with with "Can not download patch, aborting installation" problem. Any ideas? Thank you.

if it is a cd/dvd version: it is compatible - if it is downloaded it is most likely not, simple really
(Almost) all download versions out there require their own version of the patch - get them from the site where you bought the game from
