I think there are just two, and they opened in the last year or two. In N Out operates in 4 states...Cali, Arizona, Nevada and now Utah.

Can't wait until they get to Ill :D

Supposedly they source everything at In 'N Out burger in California, even the potatoes to make the fries, insuring everything is the freshest possible and never frozen so the only thing I can think of is they decided driving up the I15 from Vegas to Salt Lake wasn't much further and it was a big market so they decided to go for it. In my mind that's a bit to far. I kind of don't like how In 'N Out prints bible verses on all of their cups but it is a private company so they can if they want and I just go there because their burgers and fries are great. The whole fresh, never frozen, made by hand thing in the fast food business was fairly original back in the 1940's and has aged well even if Tommy Burger and Five Guys have since copied them.

My friend, you will be waiting for a looooooooooong time.

Zack is right. There is a limit to how far you can take fresh never frozen food from California and I'm afraid Illinois is to far. Unless In 'N Out stops using the same local suppliers they've been using since the 1940's there just isn't hope of it reaching much further. Also all In 'N Out restaurants are owned by the same founding family and there are no franchises since they didn't trust franchisees to do as good a job so they won't be expanding very quickly even in markets their supply chain can reach. On the upside (from their view) they're certainly not hurting how it is extremely normal to have a line down the block for their drive through even at 11pm on a week day night. That family must be making money hand over fist.

BTW I still like Jack in the Box not just because they're a local company (and so have lots of outlets here in San Diego) but because they do the best job of spicing up their food and introducing non-burger stuff to the menu. Their curly fries are the bomb and they have plenty of healthy options which is unusual for a fastfood chain. Not to mention they offer more then just the usual crappy American cheese on their burgers so you can order real cheddar, pepper jack, real Swiss made swiss cheese, and other cheeses on any burger. They just do a better job of keeping things interesting and bringing good ingredients compared to the other fast food joints which use frozen meats.

Breakfast 24/7 is also a big plus for jack.

I also like coming back from Tijuana (I live on the border and sometimes go down there to party all night) and being able to get a burger 24/7. Everything is on the menu is 24/7. That's great after a night of hard drinking. It's nice to pull in at 4am and get exactly what you want when you want it.

In n Out could make so much money if they expanded. I hear their food is heaven on Earth.

It is the best fast food I have ever had. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is fresh and never frozen plus it is made to order as in they do not make your burger until you order it. Compare that to all other fast food places which pre-make burgers & fries and then just put them in the bag. You literally know your burger was cooked for you, your fries were cooked only when you ordered them, and your shake was made from real fresh ice cream only when you ordered it. That's extremely rare in the fast food business. It's the best fast food I can think of not just because everything is made to order but because all, and I mean ALL, of their food is fresh and never frozen. All of the buns are baked fresh each day and at the end of the day if there are extra buns then they are thrown away. They will not sell you a burger served with yesterday's buns. They even pick the tomatoes and onions and potatoes fresh; everything must be on sale with in 24 hours of harvest. If it isn't fresh as fresh can be then they won't serve it to you. All that and a double double (In "n Out speak for double meat, double cheese) is still just $2.85. Is it any wonder In "N Out is the best fast food in any market they enter?

I totally agree. In N Out was one of the big reasons I loved living in Cali and Arizona. It really has no peer in the industry, but its also regional. I think the best fast food places serve little regional markets. The southwest certainly seems to have a bunch of the best ones (In N Out, Jack in the box, whataburger, etc)

I like A&W for example, but I don't seem them very often (don't think there are any in Louisiana). Ohio had lots of Arbys...another one that I don't see too much down here.

I like Sonic, Rallys, Popeyes and Taco Bell the best of the larger chains. McDonalds sucks.

I guess I'll add to the Nando's vote. I mean it's fairly awful, but it is recognisably food and they serve wine with it which puts it in a completely different league from any of the offerings listed. It's kind of schizophrenic in it's desire to be fast food and real food, though I suppose how you feel about it depends on if you think it's a rubbish restaurant or a great fast food joint.

All this talk is making me hungry. I want an n n Out sooooooo bad.

I also like In 'n Out's ethical employment policies. In 1993, when I was in high school, their minimum starting wage was $8.50 (my girlfriend at the time worked there) and my 15.5 year old nephew now works for an In 'N Out and they pay him $11.50 per hour. They do not cover medical (but he is young enough to be covered by his parent health insurance for another decade thanks to Obama's health care bill) but tell me about another fast food place which pays that salary to a 15.5 year old boy with no job experience. You'll notice there are no illegal aliens working at In 'N Out while all the other fast food places are stuffed with illegal aliens. They pay a living wage and that is highly unusual for a fast food place; sure, he's a teen hoping to buy his first car but he still deserves a decent wage in my mind. There aren't that many places which will pay above the California minimum wage (which is higher then the Fed minimum wage) yet In 'N Out is one of them.

Dude, KFC sucks. Popeye's is a better chicken place in every possible metric.
