I just saw "Spy Game" last night and it was a great movie - one of the best of the year. Pitt is great as always and Redford was simply outstanding - one of his best performances ever no joke. This movie combines great dialogue, excitement, surprise, and excellent acting.

"Mulholland Drive" was probably the weirdest movie I've ever seen, but I recommend it to everyone. No action but good performances, writing, a really HOT lesbian scene, and brilliant parallels w/the movie industry

"Training Day" was a great movie that suffers from a fairly weak ending, but Denzel is incredible as always

"Session 9" has alot of suspense and scares - good for people who like horror movies

"Memento" was one of the most original and well-made pictures in a while; everyone should like it

For comedy, "American Pie 2" was hillarious

Swordfish has been my personal favourite so far this year.

Dunno bout lord of the rings, I just don't like the idea of turning what is in my opinion the greatest book of all time into a film:(

I do not make a habit of watching movies, indeed, I have only been to the cinema three times since 1992, Jurassic Park in 1993, Die Hard With A Vengeance 1995, and Tomb Raider this year. All of them were as part of social occasions, and I would have much rather avoided the pictures on all occasions, as they were shallow, silly and crap.
Having said that, I will see the Lord of the Rings, as I have always wanted to see it made into a film, and it will be interesting to see it done with the benefit of modern technology. I do hope, however, they avoid to much Americanisation of it in regards to accents and characterisation. In addition, I find myself strangely drawn to see HP, if but to see such a film and try and make up for missing out on a childhood;)
(I went straight from the cot to middle age, you see; whilst all you youths were making out and giggling in cinemas I was reading, writing, wearing Nehru suits and plotting to take over the world;) )

Hmmm,
That's quite a cynical and judgmental statement you had made there.

PuHAHAhahHAHA, yeah right. THis, coming from a guy who named 200 damn movies in the last film thread, claiming them to be his all time favorites ;)

and btw, I don't have any favorite movie for this year. Even though I've watched many good movies, none of which are made in this decade.

You seem to like moaning...Your last two posts that I read were criticising Civ 3...

Anyway I would go for American Pie 2 because it was very funny!

Actually, I thought it was a quite self explanatory statement, namely that I thought those three films were crap, and would have rather not seen them. Rather simple, really.

Indeed, I named a collection of movies as AMONG MY FAVOURITES, and further cut them down to a very few finalists. (I did not claim them to be, I said they were. I believe I know my own mind, at least better than you would ;))
But it is notable that many of them are "old" movies, and even the ones made in the last few years I did NOT GO TO THE CINEMA, BUT WATCHED THEM IN MY LAIR on video, which is to me a different thing from seeing them at the pictures.
My point there and here is that I am an affecianado of films, but not of viewing them with others in a noisy cinema with a bunch of hormonally overdosing adolescents raising hell all about you. I like film, but not going to films, and thus have not liked any of the pictures this year so far, but as I said, am looking at making two exceptions, rather than wait until video.

And as for being cynical and judgemental, not only is that a complement, but it is my job, and one is rather good at it:king: , so thanks anyway Mr Tolstoy novel;)

Moaning? I wouldn't know what that sound like ;) What's a Civ3  btw, I appreciate the attention.

re:Simon Darkshade

humm, a picture is not really a picture, a cinema doesn't mean a cinema, BUT a video is a video! Ah Ha I'm catching on to you now. But seriously, I'm guessing only a person who is the president of his own cult of film buffs could have an affinity for the difference between the specific meaning between those common, everyday terms.

I can sympathize, (not that you care anyway:confused: ) with your desire to be at a intimate surrounding while watching a movie.

Going to the theater, however, is half the fun; the other half being the actual film itself...
Where it is a place one could share with many other people, strangers -- but movie goers nonetheless, the experience and enjoyment of watching a motion picture. I think there's something poetic about it, a great experience: you laugh, you fright, you cheer, and you reflect, together, as a part of the audience.
Sometimes I would make it a habit to go to the movies, even if by myself; where actually, I'm never lonely, but with film lovers.

"Memento" was by far the best movie I saw this year. So good was it in fact, that it earned a spot in my personal "top movies of all time" list.
