FAvorite Board Game

Yea, Axis and Allies is a good game, but it takes so long to set up!

If it's a bunch of people who have played it many times before, it takes less than 10 minutes. I could probably set up the whole board in 20 myself. I used to know it by heart. (it's been years now since I played)

Axis and Allies Europe, but only if you play as germany.

Europe at war.

(clone of Axis and Allies. awesome)

Monopoly and Chess, I have never played Risk.

Wow, I'm amazed there aren't that many Euro/designer gamers amongst this lot. While Monopoly and Risk, etc, certainly have nostalgic charm... I would be very hard pressed to call them good (after discovering the "new" generation of boardgames).

My current favorite games:

Hammer of the Scots : One of the ultimate wargames ever created. Great tactical depth, clean rules, 2 to 3 hour play-time. And, my gawd, the blocks are too damned cool.

Memoir '44 : Clean rules, short playtime, tons of fun. If you like/love Risk, Axis & Allies, Fortress America, Shogun, etc, you absolutely have to have this game. It is wicked fun.

Europe Engulfed : When it comes to "grand strategy" WWII games, you'd be hard pressed to beat this title. Granted there are much more detailed simulations, but you're also looking at upwards of 60+ hours to finish. EE gives all the detail and historical flavor, without bogging you down in pedantic rules. The full campaign can be completed in 14 to 24 hours (depending on your experience). Shorter scenarios can be completed in 2 to 4.

Vinci : Quick civ/empire building game. Supports up to 6 players. Usual play-time is about 2 hours (give or take). The combination of civ attributes give this a lot of spice and replayability.

Modern Art : A bonified classic.

Union Pacific : Rail-road building, stock manipulation game. While not as intense as the 18xx series, this game is way fun to play.

Napoleon : Another Columbia "block game". Much like Hammer of the Scots, this features great rules and tremendous strategic/tactical depth. As a bonus, you can play with three. Average game is about 2 hours.

Rommel in the Desert: Tense, tense, tense. If you want to learn what it was like to be engaged in Northern Africa, here's your game. It's all about supply and bluff. Scenarios range from 1.5 hours up to 6 (if they go that long).

Honorable mentions to: Princes of the Renaissance, El Grande, Twilight Imperium, Age of Steam, Bang!, Carcassonne, Pirate's Cove, Friedrich, Liberty, Settlers of Catan, Intrige, etc, etc.

Check the link in my .sig for thousands of entertaining boardames that you've never even heard of. Once you play some of these, you'll never go back to Monopoly, Risk, Life, etc. It's hard to believe, but it happened to me.

I have a gaming group that play very frequently, usually non-stop overnight marathons during weekends or any public holidays :)

There're a lot of games I like... here's some:

Puerto Rico by Rio Grande Games
Settlers of Catan, Stone Age, Cities and Knights
Civilization and its expansion Advanced Civilization (not the Sid Meier one)
Civilization: The Board Game (the Sid Meier one)
Coda
Blue Max
Robo Rally
Tyranno Ex
Acquire
Titan: The Arena

FINALY!!!!
cant believe it took so long in this thread to get to the Civiliztion game.
and i dont mean the Sid Meier one.

Aquire is a great game, but only for NON-math oriented people, i think.
people who are too good at math and analisis get too far into figuring out hte next 6 turns in advance and it slows the game to a crawl.

advanced Civilization is a GREAT game. though a bit on the long side.
i used to play it a quite bit with some friends. we got too "civilized" in playing it. have recently tried to turn it back into the "take what i need cause you cant defend it, and traded you a calamity to boot" game it used to be, with limited success.

Titan.... i'm curiuos... what's this "arena" thing????
we play a LOT of titan, and its by far my favorite game, but i dont know this arena thing. or is that just the full name of the game or something?
i assume its the game with the serpents and colosuses and archangels at 500 points, with lots of hexes and six sided dice. and not some other game that accidentaly has similar name.

we tried a settelers of catan game, it didnt go too well. maybe will try again later.

Rio Grande definetly makes some good games. not sure if we've tried puerto rico. i'm prety sure we have it in the que to try.

While Settlers is certainly an entertaining game, luck can have a decisive impact on the outcome. While I don't necessarily have anything against random events, in certain games, the importance of "random" outcomes can begin to overshadow "smart play" -- and, for some people, this can be discouraging.

Come on guys, Settlers of Catan is the best boardgame of them all, especially with all the expansions.
Oh yeah, Settlers is good, I just learned that one last year.

I'm really a boardgame enthusist (thank god my girlfriend is too) and I've come up with a pretty good list and reason's why I loved them:

Battleship: Elementary in nature, but the game could be played in 5-10 minutes which made for a good quick game. Also it was fun screwing around like having all my ships arragned to make a letter or number.

Monopoly: Many people think it's all about luck, but I think a degree of shrewed planning and strategy is involved which keeps me playing. However, even with two people, games can take forever.

The Game of Life: This is one of the few games where I enjoyed the presence of luck in the game. One minute you could be a 20k artist and the next a 100k athlete. And with the presence of life tiles and the like, you never really knew who had more money, which made victory not a forgone conclusion.

Axis & Allies - Good grief, where do I begin? One word: epic. It really felt like you were playing Word War 2 all over again. Simpler than a hex based wargame, yet complex enough to warrent some strategy, this game combines economic developement and wargaming into a perfect blend. If only setup wasn't such a pain...

monopoly hands down. is it all about luck? no way the way i play it theres property buying/trading merging and much more so it takes buisness skill to win the way we play.

1830 (any of the 18xx line, really)
History of the World
Kremlin
Rubout!

Backgammon
Monopoly
and the all-time classic... Talisman

I don't know why, but that comment sparked a memory of another great board game that I forgot... AGTfOS.

Awful Green Things from Outer Space. That game was the best. :)

Chess most definently.
