Didn't it have something to do with the leaderheads being changed in appearance to better resemble how the leader would dress when receiving a foreign dignitary? I could be making that up, but it seems plausible.
I kinda like how they're doing civ traits and leaders this time around - I will likely be more inclined to try different ones. In IV I would often gravitate to the same leaders due to liking particular leader traits or starting techs. Tough to leave the comfort zone.
I like to build so rome's ability looks nice, plus it never hurts to have some strong UU's you can get some good use out of. It's hard to pick though...so much goodness to choose from.
America's ability is decent too, which is nice. I'd be homer and go with america or england (born in england, english mum) but usually they both have crappy abilities, UUs, UBs for my style.
