It depend on what type of game you are in but religion is esspecially useful becasue of anarchy lasting for onnly one turn.

That helps, but the anarchy for me and a lot of people is a one-time deal to get to Republic or Monarchy and stay there. For most of my games Republic is the best government, so I never switch again. I used to go crazy for Democracy, but have been convinced otherwise.

Religious IS the one trait that lets you seriously think about actually using Demo, otherwise the anarchy + extra WW pretty much wipe out any of the other benefits. But the only VC I've ever noticed it to be actually useful for is a cultural 100k.

I voted Seafaring and Scientific since the poll asked for favorites, if it had asked for 'best', I would've said Ind/Agri.

Thanks Sparthage! Been lurking for awhile now, figured I should start chiming in since it seems like the number of people still playing CivIII is rapidly dwindling. But I'm glad to know there's at least a few others out there.

Yes, I find it sad that people lose interest in this amazing game of civ3, but I don't blame anyone. Old games become old and the fanbase shrinks as they move on.

I'd also like to extend my welcome.

I agree that Religious makes Demo more attractive. There's still the problem of needing 2 optional techs, one of which is very expensive. I used to go for demo all the time. I almost never do now.

You're right, there's often a difference between "favorite" and "best". They're seldom the same.

So from what I've seen on cfc traits like agri, science, ind, and commercial seem to help out your military even more than militaristic does. Is this true? Oh and my favorite traits are agri and science.

It is in a way. Agri helps with growth = more support for units. Commercial helps with cash flow = more cash for unit support. Industrial means you can work tiles faster and science probably helps in that you can get more advanced units quicker.

Militaristic was probably better pre-conquests, when MGL's could rush wonders.

In conquests, the extra armies are certianly useful, but not really game breaking.

I didn't know MGL's could rush wonders before conquests. That would certainly make militaristic more appealing! Just because of the stupidity of the AI and the fact that they don't concentrate much on military even while at war makes armies really not all that necessary.

That was, I believe, the reason why SGL's were created for conquests.

In previous versions, a fun thing to do was early war and build tons of wonders with the MGL's :)

I know that industrious and agricultural are very strong but I never play them
It feels like "cheating" when doing that because of the fast workers or growth.
Therefore I usually take scientifc civs which aren't Persia or Ottomans as this also feels "cheating" (the uu) or just take any other civ like militaristic or expansionist. I shun 1st tier civs generally and many times take challengng choise like seafaring on pangea or Russia on arch. Scientific also enables quicker establishment of research facilities, free techs, early Iron working for war-mongering etc...

Industrious - I dont think its cheating i think it cancels out the advantages of other civs. An industrious civ might not be as advanced as a scientific one but it compensates for the growth of the Industrious civ. I just love how workers rush off into resources twice the speed of a normal one!

Commercial - for extra commerce, more gpt.

Im not the war-mongering type, i usually play on a balance of power basis, Just trying to maintain score and put the AI back in line when their exploits seem to tip the scales.

I would never claim that seafaring is a trait to be much desired but I must say it is nice to have once in a while. I especially like it if I get the Lighthouse/Magellen's and my craft can go so much further on a run. Suicide currahs get a movement of 4 with TGH... that is almost safe

It does depend on your playing style. I never seem to do that well with military civs. Seafaring works well for me, lots of coastal cities giving good commerce and, as Darksi pointed out, fast currraghs make quick worldwide contacts for trade. MY top civs would be the Byzantines and the dutch.

Militaristic doesn't make as much difference for GLs as you might think. Its even odds that you will generate a Great Leader within 10.7 elite victories with a non-militaristic, and 8.0 elite victories with. Any war that's going to last 8 combats will last 10.

I've always done well with religious civs, especially Egypt and Celts. It's hard to say what the next best trait would be for me, though the militaristic ones seem to work for me.

Egypt is industrious and the Celts are agri. Religious only really helps with cultural or jihads.

I agree that the Celts are the best, that agricultural trait giving the extra food in city means that you can run a pop rushing city on two irrigated grass.

I normally default to the Celts for 100k - but always think about either Sumeria or Babylon. The deciding factor for me is often the UU, I am more comfortable going with Sumeria on higher difficulties, and babylon on easier ones (and smaller maps so ToA isn't quite as much of an issue.) Must find my cIII disk and give the HoF another crack, and stop playing FFH2!
