Well, I have not even seen the Trillogy :(. I must be the only user that has never seen the other 2 LOTR movies :(. I am compleately lost now in the LOTR moves. I would have to watch the other 2 LOTR movies before watching RotK.

Wait until htey release a pack with th euncut versions of all three in it, that would be the best idea IHO if you can wait for a while. :)

Are you kidding me? ROTK was the best book, slightly beating TTT but it was much better than Fellowship. In the Fellowship, once you find out about the Ring and the Nazgul, you can easily skip to Elrond, because half of the book is simply extremely boring. The Shire is the worst setting in the entire Middle Earth, thats why the rest of the books focus on the more Eastern part. Tom Bombadil, the hypno-tree, entirely pointless.

I disliked RotK for many reasons:

Predictability - It's simply predictable. I really can't blame it since it's the final novel fo the three, but still, it is predictable.

Tone - The tone of the book is quite dry. It always goes like: "and this happened, and then that happened". Not very exciting.

Deus Ex Machina - Well, PP already explained this, I've nothing more to add except that I feel it's lame no matter how you present it. It's like how little Anakin managed to hit the reactor core in Episode I, lame.

Are you refering more to the book or the movie, nihilistic?

Book. It's far less obvious when watching the movie since you spend much less time at it and there are so many visual effects to catch your attention and all.

Of the three movies, I would have to say the first one was my favorite. it best catches the "spirit" of the book as has already been stated. It doesn't need great big battles or extensive (not on the scale of the other two movies) CG special effects to present a wonderful story. But overall, I still would prefer to read the book again.

And yes, the animated "The Hobbit" movie rules over all!

Purple elves rock!

Yeah Jackson got them all wrong in the new ones. I mean come on, they shouldn't look that much like humans.

1. RotK
2. 2 towers
3. FotR

Those battles in RotK rocked! Its nice to see a fantasy series with a good amount of large scale military conflict (I really dislike fantasy when its written on a small scale, I.E a small group off to slay the evil dragon) but the LotR has always been about BIG things that shape the world the characters live in, thats why even though i enjoyed the first 1 it really was not on a grand enough scale for me to really say it was one of the best movie ever (nothing makes me bored quicker than an entirely character centered movie/book). however the 2 towers and now return of the king have been increasingly better as they went on

A simple choice for myself personnally...

FOTR = 1
TT = 2
RTK = 3

I felt the best one was the "Fellowship of the Ring" which is even better when you watch the extended version. I preferred the characters being together and learning the history of the ring with the threat very much feared than real for much of the film without it being stultifying (hehe).

The second film is less preferable as we have a very unconvincing period with Arwen and Aragorn and he goes over a cliff. We also see the first impossible act by Legolas and Gandalf comes back, but has lost the charm, warmth and kindness of Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf should have died there, bringing him back, though in the book spoilt the story in my view. The film did however do extremely well with the introduction of Gollum and with Pippin, Merry and the Ents.

The third film, though like all the films a magnificient piece was not as good as the first film in my opinion as the companionship was less real than the first two. The scenes of companionship were handled very badly and the relationships between characters just didn't gel. You had the awful representation of the army of the dead and their appearance at Pellanor fields was unjustified. You had some awful speeches, awful dialogue (especially by Aragorn) and the worst piece of superman combat with Legolas. The final 15 minutes were really **** too...

For these reasons (mostly negative) I chose the first film which I felt fitted in most closely with my vision of Middle-Earth and the characters in it.

Also you get the best battle at the START of the film with Sauron whacking people with a big mace :p
