I chose Terra because I love having that sense of exploring and conquering a New World before the AI

Pangea because I hate naval combat and managing transports is very annoying. So more land, the better-- I hate waging war against someone on another continent.

Terra's not too bad too, because everyone starts on the same landmass. I also play it for the sake of seeing advanced barbs.

The disadvantage to this, is that you sacrifice Overseas trade route bonus, so, your Trade gold is lower.

no, random empires but not with unrestricted leaders with random personalities. I like to see people like toku turtling up in the stone age when everybody have got infantry or shaka dominating the world with a massive army.

Exactly. Mix and match. There was once a debate about who would be the best unrestricted leader of Rome. Boudica of Rome was enticing to a lot of people for super prats.

I love terra, but only the custom game option with players starting on both landmasses. I don't like the old world start only. In that was it basically becomes a big and medium map you could say, but the land mass is more interesting than just a standard continents.

Also hemispheres rocks, it's much more interesting than continents, but same general concept of a few large landmasses.

He's talking to the OP. Should be "Favourite map on which to play". Because that sounds so much more natural.

Big and Small for the nice coastlines and "Earthy" feel while providingf a different map every time with variability.

I guess, but I'd still prefer Terra for that. I think in the end it's better for the AI, since watching the AI try to do a invasion across the ocean is pretty painful.
