Thanks, Husky.

Also, could anyone tell me what this "indie" rock I hear about is?

Rock and Metal are not the same. Both very good though.:)
Britannica says that it is a genre of rock.
Encyclopedia Britannica said:
Heavy Metal
genre of rock music that includes a group of related styles that are intense, virtuosic, and powerful. Driven by the aggressive sounds of the distorted electric guitar, heavy metal is arguably the most commercially successful genre of rock music.

EDIT: For those who like classic rock here is a classic rock radio station.

What do you call it? I've heard alot of people get upset at those labels but I havn't heard a good alternative.

I'm a bit eclectic (like, it seems, plenty of people here). I voted Current Rock, and much of my favourite music is indeed metal, alt rock and the like, but I also like much of classic rock, some electronica/techno (I like it, so I'm allowed to call it whatever I want!:p), some folk music, and even some forms of pop (I've got an inexplicable weakness for the German popsinger Blümchen - AKA Blossom - , for no reason I'd like to know). Never listened much to jazz or classical music, but there's some good there too.

What I can't stand is hip-hop and rap. Never heard a track of either that I liked, as far as I can recall.

My tastes are far too varied to go into much detail here*

Tool
Tricky
Masive Attack
Kosheen
Pink Floyd
Velvet Underground
Lamb
Radiohead (nmot as much these days, though)
Björk
Cog I have to plug these guys every chance I get - they're that good...
DJ Shadow
Jeff Buckley
Elliott Smith
P J Harvey

I could go on like this...I mainly listen to electronic stuff these days, however

Oh and I actually don't mind some country, either. More of the 'classics' though most recent country is absolute rubbish.

*I was going to say ecelctic, but I forgot the word, because it was too pretensious.

:goodjob: Good List

oh my favourite is definitely funk.... and from that you can go into rythm and blues and soul music... im not into jazz though, modern or fusion

Classic Rock. Anything from Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, early Elvis and Chuck Berry to Bob Dylan, Beatles, Black Sabbath and AC/DC. I stopped caring alot about popular music circa the mid 90's.

Right now it's funk, but I'll always have a special place for goa/techno/trance music.

Why, you must have posted without reading all the posts ;)

I don't actually have a problem with people calling it techno/electronica if they like the stuff. It's just the people that say "techno sucks" make me turn to over genrefying everything.

As for what to call it, I generally call the whole shennanigan EDM for electronic dance music (its too broad a subject to call it much else). Electronica tends to refer to stuff like prodigy and similar kinds of breaks.

A good place to start learning the names, albiet horrifically biased and somewhat arbitrary but nevertheless entertaining and mostly right is www.ishkur.com/music . Just click the big "launch the music guide" button and have fun! It's really not a boring thing to check out (and have your sound on). Just don't take this place as your bible.

:hatsoff: I was trying to pretend that I'm not pretensious. But if you do still demand satisfaction...it's on!
