Spoiler :
Whale Kills Trainer at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium

Eyewitnesses Watched 12,000 Pound Whale Attack Female Trainer

A female trainer was killed today by a 12,000 pound killer whale at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Fla., according to police and local media.

Eyewitnesses told ABC News affiliate WFTV the trainer was pulled into the tank at Shamu Stadium sometime after 2 p.m.

The whale responsible for the attack is a bull, or male, named Tilikum. He has lived at the park since 1992, and is one of eight killer whales there.

"Currently deputies with the full cooperation of SeaWorld have secured the scene and homicide detectives have been requested to respond and conduct a death investigation follow-up, along with our forensics unit," said Capt. Angelo Nieves of the Orange County Sheriff's Office in a statement.

One witness, park visitor Victoria Biniak, told WKMG-TV that the trainer was just introduced the whale during a live public show at the stadium.

Soon after, Biniak said, the whale came up from the water and grabbed the woman.

"He was thrashing her around pretty good. It was violent,'" Biniak said.

The whale "took off really fast in the tank, and then he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing around, and one of her shoes flew off," she said.

Visitors were evacuated and the park closed following the attack.

There was confusion about what exactly happened.A spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office said the 40-year-old woman had slipped and fell into a holding tank.

"A female trainer back in the whale holding area slipped into tank and was fatally injured," the police spokesman said.

The sheriff's added there was no evidence of "foul play."

SeaWorld and the Orange County Sheriff's Office would not immediately identity the trainer, but Dan Brown, vice president and general manager of SeaWorld Orlando, called the woman one of the park's "most experienced trainers."

He also characterized the death as a "drowning."

Neither the police or SeaWorld officials would take questions.

"It is with great sadness that I report that one of our most experienced animal trainers drowned in an incident with one of our killer whales this afternoon," said Brown. "We have never, in the history of our parks, experienced an incident like this," he said.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends and of the trainer and will do everything possible to assist them in this difficult time."

Previous Attacks by Killer Whales
Killer whales, or orca, have attacked several trainers at aquatic theme parks.

The body of a naked man was found scratched, bruised and draped over Tilikum's back in July 1999. The man, 27-year-old Daniel Dukes, reportedly made his way past security at SeaWorld, remaining in the park after it had closed. Wearing only his underwear, Dukes either jumped, fell or was pulled into the frigid water of Tilikum's huge tank.

An autopsy ruled that he died of hypothermia in the 50-degree water. Dukes' parents filed a lawsuit against the park later that year but later withdrew it.

In November 2006, trainer Kenneth Peters, 39, was bitten and held underwater several times by a 7,000-pound killer whale during a show at SeaWorld's San Diego park, according to the Associated Press.

He escaped with a broken foot.

That same whale, a 17-foot-long female orca, had attacked Peters two other times, in 1993 and 1999.

Another reason to not visit these "attractions"...

I'm glad the police are treating the dolphin as a person, though murder might be a bit much.

It has begun.

These sorts of things, while tragic, always make me think of these comments by Chris Rock.

So the trainer slipped into the water, and instead of trying to save her, they rushed the audience out, forgetting about the innocent only for paramedics to arrive on the scene with a dead trainer and a whale with a full stomach?

Yes, our human race is brilliant at times.

Interesting that the article doesn't mention Tillikum's full history - you think the media would be all over that.

Tillikum is the main reason Sealand shut down here in Victoria, BC. Tillikum dragged a trainer under water, then he and Haida & her calf 'played' with the trainer, thinking she was a toy. It was 2 hours later before anyone could recover the body.

Spoiler :
A killer whale that was moved to Florida’s SeaWorld from Victoria’s Sealand of the Pacific in 1991 after a trainer was drowned by three whales is reported to have killed again.

Television stations in Miami are reporting that Tillikum dragged a female trainer into the Shamu Stadium tank Wednesday afternoon.

Sections of SeaWorld, which is known for its killer whale, seal and dolphin displays, were closed to the public after the attack, according to WFTV news.

It is the third time that Tillikum, the largest orca in captivity, weighing about 5,000 kilograms, has been involved in a death.

In 1991 Keltie Lee Byrne, a 20-year-old trainer at the Oak Bay tourist attraction, drowned after she fell into the water and was dragged below the surface by Tillikum and two female whales, Haida and her calf Nootka.

In front of a dozen horrified spectators, the three whales batted Byrne around as if she was a toy and would not let her out of the water.

After Byrne drowned, it took about another two hours for staff to retrieve the body, which was being protected by the whales.

Sealand closed the following year and all three whales were shipped to marine parks in the United States.

Tillikum was involved in another death in 1999, when a 27-year-old man hid in the Sea World park and, after it closed, tried to go swimming with the whales.

When staff arrived the next morning, they found the nude body of Daniel Dukes draped over Tillikum’s back. The man’s swimming suit was found in the tank.

Tillikum has primarily been used for breeding since he was sent to Sea World and he has fathered four calves.

One of Tillikum’s calves, Ky, was involved in a 2004 incident at SeaWorld when a trainer was repeatedly slammed under the water, but was not injured.

The death is immediately reigniting debate over keeping killer whales in captivity.

Peter Hamilton, founding director of Lifeforce, urged Sealand not to send Tillikum to Sea World in 1992.

“I urged them to release all three,” he said in an e-mail immediately after hearing about the death.

“I said that he would attack again.”

Orca from Oak Bay's Sealand involved in killing a third person

As for the second person whose death Tillikum was 'involved' with - the guy who hid in SeaWorld for a swim with the whales - I think I'd just call him a Darwin Award candidate.

Interesting that you would read so much into a subject bar.

I actually changed it. My first inclination was "When Killer Whales Attack", but I thought it was a bit tasteless given that she had died.

From the article Adria posted above:

“I urged them to release all three,” he said in an e-mail immediately after hearing about the death.

“I said that he would attack again.”

Ruh roh. Someone's going to get in trouble...

Don't get killer whales confused with land sharks.

While tragic, I find it a non-story. A woman died doing what she loved - so what?
She loved being brutalized by large mammals?
