Why would a simple machine waste its time on things like that, when it could just as well be eating or screwing?

I'm a materialist, certainly, but I'm not a biological reductionist. There's a lot of space in saying that biological machines are a necessary vehicle of human conciousness, and saying that we are nothing more than those machines.
