Feud II: Rebirth

Woah! You started way too early. I would like to join.

Anyone can join whenever they want. :)

Let me get everyone started on what's supposed to be done first.

1. Select new leader. The players new to select the new Elder Chief and, if they want, create some system around that. Otherwise, the Elder Chief has absolute power. Now, let's assume I was Elder Chief.

2. The Elder Chief, when he has absolute power, has the power to draft orders. Not as hard as it seems. Here's an example.

First draft.

Legislative

1. I, Sonereal, am the Elder Chief.

2. Rename the Tribe "Sonerealites"

Foreign

1. Ignore the other tribes. Focus inward for the time being.

Military

1. Expand the bodyguards. Make them my own personal militia. Increase the amount of food they receive to three.*

Intelligence

1. Do nothing.

Internal

1. Direct any available manpower next turn to the Bodyguards.

Science and Innovation

1. Begin to adopt agriculture practices.

Political

1. I will work with other players next season to create this new rules.

*The new bodyguards are coming from the manpower that will be available next season.

I seem to be joining lots of things after you leave..

Anyway, in as myself.

"Trees.. So. Many. Trees. And we want to FARM here? We dont even have axes to cut the trees. Oh, what are axes? A large, sharp, blocky blade tied to a handle for leverage. Typicaly made out of metal or stone. What is metal, tied, and leverage? Jeopardy I swear. No, dont ask that. Damn we have a lot of work to do..."

From the first update, I see several issues.

1. We have neighbors very close, and all around. I do not like this, its dangerous to our interests, and caps our expansion. We should move. More on this later.

2. We have, as Sonreal posted, no way to store food, and thus no way to "improve" our situation other than tech. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. I would go as far as to say it is our number one priority.

3. Government and Tribe name. The fun part.

4. The farmer/hunter split.

5. The lack of intelligence on our neighbors

6. The fate of the body guards.

Sirs, I will attempt to deal with these issues one at a time.

First, our neighbors and the case for migration (lumped with the farmer/hunter split) (I saw something Duke Blackstone posted before he edited his post, so this is his idea. Its a goodie though).
-We need to move somewhere more secure, with better possibilities for food. I suggest the coast. It will allow us access to fish, and give us a wall at our backs. That way, we wont be surrounded and slaughtered.
-To get there, we should move one territory each year pausing in the spring and traveling in the winter.
-This gives us time to both plant and harvest, and that might be long enough to develop how to farm successfully by the time we hit the coast. Also, it will allow us to discover more plants to domesticate, and hopefully a source of SALT. Priority one is finding salt. This leads to point 2.

We need a way to preserve food. This is our most importent problem, and should be fixed before any others. I say we put all our women on the task, and instruct our hunters to look for salt. I expect us to develop pottery or dried jerky, hopefully both. Moving to the ocean will give us easy access to salt, so that will be very helpful. Any other ideas?

We need a tribe name, and a government. I have no preferece on the name, but for the government I suggest a two prong republic. We, the immortals, will form the upper body, and have control of major issues in policy. The lower will deal with the day to day life of our people, and until we grow, act as a court system, with some tough cases forwarded to the upper house (us). The lower house will be trusted, older men or women, chosen every 5 years. Thoughts? (no establishment of a tax system yet, we arnt big enough to need currency).

The Farmer Hunter rivalry should be addressed dependent on these constants: We have no way of knowing how long it will take to develop successful agriculture. We have no way to cut trees or plow the ground yet. Our hunters are producing a surplus of at least +10 food per turn.
As long as these stay the same, we should not move a large amount of manpower to working on farming. I think we should detail 4 men, our most intelligent and open minded, to learning how to best grow and harvest plants, as well as finding out which plants are best to harvest. Give them a special title, so they wont catch too much flak from the other hunters.

The lack of intelligence on our neighbors is not making me happy. I want trade, and I want warning of attacks or invasion. The best way of doing this that I can see is to use 2 of our body guards as ambassadors. Their job is to find trade opportunities, particularly technological trade, and hints that the neighboring tribes are getting restless. Also, I want them to spread our language, and if we have one, our religion. Give them a special title as well.

We might need a currency sooner rather than later, looking at it this way. What would it be based on?

Finally, we should use our two remaining body guards to teach our hunters how to be better fighters, and to experiment with other weapons. Say, make each hunter train in weapons one day out of 5. At the very least, it should make them more effective in bringing in food. Edit: I want axes :)

Edit 2: One of the immortals should start creating a religion, with us at its head at least. Better a planned one than an unplanned, foreign one.

For the record, any tools you guys make would probably be built of either stone or wood right now.

Stone cant cut down a tree.. So farming would be more like a herb garden on the side of a river right?
*Sonreal, are you playing or just managing the game?

Managing but early on, I'll pipe in like I did in the other Feud so everyone gets on track.

And yes. You very well won't be able to do much in a forested area for now except maybe some horticultural stuff.

A hooded man enters the camp....

"I'm Sonereal the Wise. I go place to place, helping people. If you don't mind, I could stay here for a year and advise the people in anything they need to know."

Accept: Y/N?

Well, since it seems like most people here support me sticking around for a while, I'll give my first piece of advice.

1. Don't get cocky on the food situation. It's spring so your hunters were able to bring in a lot of food but the number will hardly be constant. The longer you stay in an area (and as time goes on), less food can be brought in and supporting the population will become more difficult through hunting alone. Not to mention that the gathering of edible plants by women also played a factor in how much food was brought in this season.

2. As the population grows, there will be less reason for people to want to pool resources. Especially once agriculture picks up. Because of this, start thinking about a tax system on food. Also remember that farmers need to feed themselves as well. On the flipside, grain can be stored easily compared to meat and the yields will be sizable and more importantly, stable, compared to farming.

3. Be extremely careful with how the government is set up. Worst case scenario: The government is unable to rapidly respond to events. Not to mention that there will always be those who seek power.

4. Your "bodyguards" use wooden clubs/branches as weapons. Some have stone weapons but overall, the weapons are wooden.

5. It's very hard to trade when there's no way to store food and no stable source of food. With agriculture, the population will grow and it'll require less than the entire tribe hunting and gathering food to support the entire tribe.

I say we focus on training hunters and save the food for the people.

What does everyone think about the coastal migration, or the republic system of government? We also need a tribe name.

Well, if you try to use agriculture while moving, it would take four years to reach the sea but you would also have to take account that it'll take longer to travel through a mountainous area (which would have much less food in it to hunt of farm). Not to mention that only subsistence farming may be possible at the moment because we lack farming tools.

And traveling through the winter would lead to people dying.

However, it would leave us in a stronger position in the end. I would say that the subsistence farming is acceptable, it will just serve to increase our farmers skill and compliment the meat diet. How much would traveling through the winter hurt our population?

Anyway, I am submitting a budget for the new manpower next year. I again agree that hunting is going to be our primary means of support.

Hunters and Gatherers: 60%
Farmers: 20%
Specials(military, diplomats, scouts, scientists exc...): 20%

Depends on how harsh the winter is and how prepared you guys are. If you just decide to pack up and start moving during the winter, maybe 10% of the Tribe.
