To the Butchers of Amur and their loyal dogs

The Northern Alliance was always a nebulous thing, three nations bound only through their dreams of conquest. I had thought they would be led by noble Bannor or proud Hippus. Now, we see which hand holds the knife and which holds the leash. Coward Caswa, you have shown the world how the Northern Alliance fights - not with honor on the field of battle, but slinking like a dog in the night, poison and betrayal your only tools. Your mark on history is a stain upon the once proud lineage of Kylorin. The taint in your blood has released dark imps and foul creatures, your meddling has poisoned the waters of Erebus with the Entropy of Hell itself, and now you seek to enrich yourself through the betrayal of your allies. O people of Kwythellar and Avelorn, take heed! O brave Ir-O-Kee, guard your children well. 'Ware the Northern alliance and their black treachery. It is better to have an honest enemy than a scheming friend.

Thank Tali we did not offer our assistance when you were in need. Thank Danalin we stayed home, tending to our own troubles. Had we answered your duplicitous call, you would have the black banner of the Amurites flying over our proud cities. Be warned, cowards of the North, that you will not find us as trusting as the Grigori, and you will not find our lands so easy to pillage. Our swamps will swallow you whole and wipe your foul taint from the world.

We ask of the people of Sabel-Upon-Gate, what does your Juna-Belaeigna say about slaying your allies to escape an agreement? What does the code of Junil say about foul treachery and vile betrayal?

We ask of the people of Altheriol ta Mealtheil why your people were the ones dying with honor at the walls of the keep while Caswa and his cronies hung back until the tide of battle was clear? The battle was won through your strength and fury while the spoils of battle, the Patrian Spear, still lies in Amurite hands?

May your ancestors judge you by the acts of today. May your children know you by the oaths that you keep. May your gods look upon you and read your black hearts.

May our rains always find you.

OOC: This is not a declaration of anything. This is simply a response to the update. Any declarations (of anything) will be clear and unambiguous.

To: The Kappa

We would like to make it clear that the Bannor only sent a small number of our troops to join forces with the Northern Alliance, and we played but a minor part in this scheme. Our main concern was ridding the North of a dangerous and unpredictable Warlord. We would appreciate you not attempting to rally the moral argument against us, our men were but dogs of General Caswa, and our sages and wisemen focused our efforts on defensive measures in these past few years, not on expansion.

And really, Kol, you of all people were a part of that? I mean, you were so amazingly ticked off when the Amurites clobbered you... I guess you have a short memory or low morals when it comes to NES'ing...

Or maybe I was just trying to get the sympathy vote to end that blasted embargo... :p

To the People of the World

Know that the People of Ember are our friends and under our protection. Any attack against them is considered an attack upon the Amurite People.

General Caswa

To the Kappa

In the past, before Kylorin arrived to lead our people, the Amurites were weak and divided, the remnants of a small fief of Patria. We were prayed upon by the hordes of starving barbarians, ready to kill our people for our food. We fought, and fought, and still they came. It was only by burning the city down along with the invaders that we were able to survive. We learned a Lesson, then.

The Bannor also learned this lesson in their past. Starving and struggling through the wastelands of Agares, They learned about sacrafice, about leaving behind the weak and wounded, the old and the feeble.

We learned of the price of Survival.

If we fight now, it is only to ensure our survival. The Grigori were powerful, and a potential threat. We fought to ensure they would not grow to be this threat.

General Caswa

OOC: @ Kol: but dogs of general caswa? surely you don't want to call your men dogs?

While we are upset by the amount of casualties that our men (OOC: and how much it's going to cost to replace them) we were well aware that it would be the Hippus doing most of the fighting since we have the largest and most experienced army of the three. Without our men's brave sacrifice this day would have been lost.

To the Northern Empires

We have never sent threats to our neighbors.

We have never harbored men who killed friends.

We have never compromised our trust.

We have never slinked in the dust.

We have never withheld any hope of frienship.

We have never lost it with a word.

Yet you have been all of this, and more.

One of you has helped men who killed innocents.

One of you has embraced total war.

One of you has slinked before and slinked yet again.

So Three, together, evermore.

Together, you will expand, striking left and right.

Taking down noble foes lying for power.

Striking possible allies, delaying trust.

You shall not find an entrance to the south.

You all, shall not find rest in the south.

Forever more, you shall not find rest in Erebus while our Spirits of Balance stalk the world!

Explain your recent actions against the Grigori.

You will find no solace or peace amongst our lands and know that you are not wanted here. Should your troops be found we will waste no time in setting upon them.

From: Ember:

My uncle was a fool with no understanding of the twisted times he lived in. My mixed blood makes me aptly suited to 'swim amongst the sharks' in the modern age of man. Come and join me and leave my uncle to sit wallowing in his flacid dreams of conquest and blood that will never happen.

To: Grak and his tribe:
From: the Ir-O-Kee:

In response to your diplomatic attempts know that no orc, whether loyal to yourself or your niece is welcome in our lands. Our ancestors know only too well the taste your bestial kind has for Ir-O-Kee flesh and we will not soon forget the raids of ages past. You have gnolls in your army and we know that once, their fathers feasted upon our fathers like wolves upon the flock. You will find that times have changed since then. No pretty words written in the amurite script will change our minds. Stay out of our lands or else!

everyone should have their stats except nutranurse for whom i am awaiting a decision in response to the 'violet orchard' offer.

EDIT: Nutranurse- you should have your stats now also.

if you didn't get your stats or if i screwed up your stats please advise me.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE:

A Noble House with a Vision

It seems that everyone has a plan for the future and the White Mist Monarch is not immune to her nobles’ scheming. It seems that one family, the ‘Violet Orchard’ nobles, known as the second largest noble family amongst the elven elite has plans to turn their island into a major trading hub. They have already developed means to transport men and equipment using ships similar to those employed by the northern Eekin sailors.

The family presents to the queen a sample of pine and wild-flowers which do not grow on their island as well as a handful of Mica flakes claiming they have already made trips to the mainland and have proof. They will assist the queen and her advisors with their ships and their knowledge of sailing but they have many caveats, the biggest of which is a demand that a department of foreign trade be established with them as its sole ministers.

Other noble families are upset by the presumptuous demands of the ‘Violet Orchard’ family.

The White Queen makes a decisive move and seizes the galleys of the 'Violet Orchard' family; it will not be the one family making the decisions of the elven nation but the monarch. At the same time one of the scions of the 'house of the Violet Orchard' is appointed to her council as minister of foreign trade.

No effect upon stability. Most noble houses are willing to accept the decision and while the 'House of the Violet Orchard' may not like the decision they are content with their 'consolation prize' (for now).
White Mist Elves gain two galleys (not two galley fleets) and while this allows them to perform diplomacy with the mainland of the central continent, it is not sufficient to allow them to transfer any troops or engage in trade of goods.
Reverse engineering the galleys provides 10 rp towards monomere technology.

We are merely asking questions, not making judgements. If you condemn the betrayal of the Grigori, make it public. If you condone it, do nothing. We have made our opinion clear, but the other nations of the world remain silent. Each man is afforded a voice, but true courage lies in speaking truth to power. Our outcries may well draw the attention of the coward Caswa, and it may bring war unto our lands, but we cannot be idle and say nothing. Passivity is a slow road to vassalage, and the Kappa will live under no man's boot.

If you view the Grigori as a threat, you are as stupid as you are cowardly. Perhaps you should look to your own borders instead of backstabbing nations across the continent.

The High Circle is in conclave. You shall await the judgement of our leaders.

OOC: How do the economies of NPC's work? Particularly how do the economies of new NPC's such as the Clan work?

I was quite suprised by how many orc units we faced in R30 last turn.

world spell- thats what i was alluding to in update 8 with the goblin exodus in your lands and the orcish migrations near the hippus

Economies of NPCs are just like economies of the players but they have different starting points...
so the Ir-O-Kee are diong pretty good now because even though they started weaker then the human players the sheer time they have been involved has let them research and build.
the hallowed are weak as . .. .. .. . because they just got set up properly when they were set on fire and lost their one really good improvment
the clan is new but i started them pretty tough- i won't say exactly how tough though.

anyway- the point is - once they are set up and have stats they follow the same rules as the player nations with tech rates, buildings etc. thats why i had stats available for the 'als, kappa, luchuirp and wme ready when the new players joined.

Oh and one more thing. Can you have more then one of an individual type of resource-providing improvement per region? Like 2 Soybean farms or something?

Oh and one more thing. Can you have more then one of an individual type of resource-providing improvement per region? Like 2 Soybean farms or something?

You can have unlimited rural improvements (hunting, fishing, farming, mines, quarries, cottages, pastures, hamlets) as you can buy in a province.
You can only have 1 city improvement (potters' workshop, tannery, brewery, abbey, temple, intelligene bureau, weaponsmith, barracks, targeting range, tower of mastery) per province.

I wil ammend (later) the improvements page to make this clearer.

In response to some PMs

1) You can trade your workforce around from one improvement/building to another. If you refer to update 8, you'll notice that i said that improvements that are not being worked do not decay any more. This means you can leave them empty. So, lets say for example, you have a beaver trap improvement (generates mostly money) and a communal farm (generates mostly food), you could leave one empty and work the other depending on if you want food or money. BUT you have to state if you are changing your workforce in your orders or i have no idea which one you are going to be working.

2) there are more animals and resources then listed. If you come up with a great idea that is dependent upon a resource that is not listed (ie- tiger cavalry) don't wait for (tiger) resources to come up- send me an e-mail and ask me. A player recently did this and that was great. I encourage others to do this also.

3) Ask me about projects or other things that you want a record kept of by e-mail not PMs... PMs get erased- e-mails get organized and catalogued.

Lastly a gripe that i need to vent about

4) Please send orders with the proper tittle. If you don't know what turn number it is, look it up in the thread. From now on i am deleting e-mails that say orders on them that don't have the name of the civ or the turn number on them.... that means i'll just have your governors order your troops to defend and your cities to bank gold and food. I won't send you an e-mail to tell you i did this- you'll get to find out at the update.

also- i asked you all to do the math on your improvements. There are formulas in the stats sheet to help you with this. If you are too lazy to do this then leave and i'll find a player who isn't. I have lots to keep track of without doing the math for you because you can't be arsed. There will be no warnings.... most of you are great for doing your math and provding excellent orders but 2-3 of you are consistantly horrible and its a huge difference in processing orders for those that are following the instructions and those that aren't. Anyone who summits order this turn without doing their own math on improvements will end up paying NPC accountants a 15gold fee to do their accounting for them.

Sorry to come down on you but as you can see this is a fairly complex NES. As your interactions and diplomacy and as your improvements and projects get more advanced so too do your orders. I should be spending my time interweaving your orders so that they make sense and provide a story out of them. I shouldn't be doing the math on how much your improvements cost.

I think i've done my part in providing a fun world for you to interact in and a set of rules that aren't compeletly fragged up and that can maintain some sense of balance. I'm having fun and i hope you are too.

Having said that, its NOT fun for me to do YOUR JOB. If all the other players can do it, why can't you (you know who you are)?

EDIT: that sounds really really harsh and i don't want it to... so if you feel that was too harsh, i'm very sorry and i would never ask anyone to leave for getting thier orders mixed up and i realize people are busy... again: very sorry.

Immac.

Don't be sorry. It's incredibly easy for the players to keep track of their spendings using the spreadsheet that you provide with the stats, I don't see why anyone would have trouble with this.

I realise that this sounds a little arrogant but if the problem continues then feel free to send those players the structure I use for my Orders.

upgrade cost=cost of new improvement-(cost of improvement being upgraded/2)

If I am upgrading several things, can I lump them together to save the round-off error? Example: I want to upgrade two guys with tools to open pit mines. Separately that would be
15-(5/2)=12.5=13 x 2 = 26 gold
Together, it is
30-(10/2)=25 gold
I know, I'm a cheapskate, but 1 gold can be pivotal in certain situations, and an empire of improvements adds up...

Hbar's question made me remember a math question I had earlier: what is the policy on rounding?

Is it just the standard 0.5< round down, > or = 0.5 round up?
